THERE'S NEW RESEARCH THIS MORNING --

SHEDDING LIGHT ON AUTISM IN AMERICAN CHILDREN.

HERE IN THE U-S, IT AFFECTS ABOUT ONE IN A HUNDRED YOUNG CHILDREN.

AND NOW -- EXPERTS ARE QUESTIONING HOW AND WHY A SMALL NUMBER OF KIDS ARE ABLE TO OVERCOME IT?

ROBERT BAZELL.EXPLAINS MORE. Return to index of stories...

AUTISIM STUDY-PKG

Jake Exkorn is a perfectly normal sixteen year old.

But when he was two years old --shown in these videotapes -- he was diagnosed with severe autism, the widespread disorder that affects a child's ability to have social interactions,

SOT Karen Mom: "He stopped relating. He wasn't interested in other kids. he wasn't even interested in me or his dad. And by his second birthday, he stopped speaking entirely."

After two years of of intensive therapy 40 hours a week he was declared free of autism and he remains so to this day.

SOT Jake 1: "When I look at the videos when I'm two years old, I cannot believe that at one point in my life that was me.

New research from the University of Connecticut closely studying 34 such cases including Jake concludes that the outcome is real -- therapy does bring a cure in some cases. And it is often with kids who were severely autistic.

SOT Dr. Deborah Fein/ "They had very little language when they were two or three years old and they were --most of them classically autistic."

But the good news comes with caveats

SU Bridge/ "Researchers caution that such cases only represent a portion of children with autism -- perhaps as few as one in 10. And there is no way to predict in advance which kids can be cured."

It is possible the kids like Jake have a certain genetic makeup that makes them responsive to therapy but doctors have no idea what that is

SOT Dr. Fred Volkmar/ "We have to frame the results not to give parents false hope, but to be really honest about what we can hope expect, given the better rates of early diagnosis and intervention."

But, the experts believe that early diagnosis and intervention remains key

SOT Jake 2: "I feel proud that I'm able to help in any way -- whether it's doing the study or just representing the possibility of recovery."

Possible for sure. But achievable only rarely and for reasons not yet understood. Return to index of stories...

THIS IS THE SCENE AFTER A SHOTGUN GOES OFF AT THE DIXIE GUN AND KNIFE SHOW, HITTING THREE PEOPLE INCLUDING A RETIRED WAKE COUNTY DEPUTY.

"People were just walking so quickly you could tell they were starting to panic a little bit."

INVESTIGATORS SAY MINUTES BEFORE THIS COMMOTION, GARY WILSON OF WILMINGTON BROUGHT HIS GUN INSIDE THE JIM GRAHAM BUILDING TO HAVE IT INSPECTED BY LAW ENFORCEMENT. HE PLANNED TO SELL IT. IT WAS IN A CASE AND WHEN WILSON OPENED THE CASE FOR INSPECTION, THE GUN WENT OFF JUST A FEW FEET AWAY FROM EMORY LEWIS.

"And when I turned around, I heard the gun hit the table and when I heard the gun hit the table I heard the shot went off and the guy that was standing right in front of me about as far as you are from me now, it went through his hand and then I heard a lady hollering and it went through her side somewhere."

"They had an announcement that said to evacuate the building immediately so everybody started walking, shuffling together toward the door to exit."

A 54-YEAR-OLD WOMAN WAS SHOT IN HER TORSO, A 50-YEAR-OLD MAN, AND A RETIRED DEPUTY, A 54-YEAR-OLD MAN WERE BOTH SHOT IN THE HAND. IT'S UNCLEAR IF WILSON WILL FACE ANY CHARGES BUT FAIRGROUNDS SAFETY OFFICIALS SAY WHAT IS CLEAR IS THE SHOT WAS FIRED BEFORE ANY LAW ENFORCEMENT HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO INSPECT THE GUN.

"The weapon discharged before any of our employees had ever taken possession or touched the firearm or had the opportunity to make it safe." Return to index of stories...

CLOUDY PERIODS

There are still some cloud complications across Southwest Florida for your Sunday. Expect patchy dense fog through the morning, especially in the inland areas. Otherwise, the first half of the day will be mostly cloudy and warm. By this afternoon, we'll be seeing a few breaks for sunshine and temperatures will head back into the upper 70s. The breeze will be lighter than yesterday, coming in from the northeast at 5 - 10 mph. If boating is in your Sunday plans, good news, seas will be 1 - 2 feet and inland waters will have a light chop. As we look ahead into the week, cloud cover will be decreasing a bit each of the next few days. Highs will be in the upper 80s for Monday, but will cool to the low to mid 70s for Tuesday and Wednesday. By Wednesday, the skies will be mostly sunny. Overnight lows will also be on the decrease. Tonight we'll only drop into the lower 60s. We'll be in the upper 50s tomorrow night and lower 50s for the middle of the week. There are no good rain chances in the next 7 days.
