THIS AFTERNOON GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT ANNOUNCED PLANS TO GIVE A PAY RAISE TO FLORIDA'S TEACHERS.
HE WANTS TO INCREASE SALARIES FOR TEACHERS BY 25-HUNDRED DOLLARS.
THAT MOVE WOULD COST THE STATE NEARLY 5-HUNDRED MILLION.
BUT GOVERNOR SCOTT SAYS IT'S WORTH IT.
THE NATIONAL COUNCIL ON TEACHER QUALITY RECENTLY RANKED FLORIDA TEACHERS NUMBER ONE IN THE COUNTRY.

THAT'S A "GOOD QUESTION" THAT COUNTLESS NEW TEACHERS PONDER WHEN CHOSING *WHERE THEY WANT TO WORK.

THE AVERAGE ANNUAL PAY ACROSS THE COUNTRY FOR CLASSROOM TEACHERS:
56-THOUSAND 6-HUNDRED DOLLARS.
THE NATIONAL EDUCATION ASSOCIATION PULLS INCOME DATA FROM ALL STATES.
NOW LOOK AT FLORIDA.
THE AVERAGE TEACHER SALARY IS 46-THOUSAND 2-HUNDRED.
SO THE ANSWER TO THIS "GOOD QUESTION" IS AN EMPHATIC 'NO.'
WE ARE WELL *BELOW THE NATIONAL AVERAGE.
FLORIDA TEACHERS MAKE ABOUT 10-THOUSAND DOLLARS LESS.
SO WHERE DOES THAT PUT US IN THE NATIONAL RANKING FOR SALARIES?
NEAR THE BOTTOM.
FLORIDA COMES IN AT NUMBER 45.
FOLLOWED BY NORTH DAKOTA. WEST VIRGINIA. OKLAHOMA. MISSISSIPPI AND SOUTH DAKOTA AT 50.
YOU MIGHT SAY 'THE COST OF LIVING DIFFERS DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LIVE.'
BUT EVEN IN THE SOUTHEAST, FLORIDA TEACHERS MAKE ABOUT 2-THOUSAND LESS THAN NEAR-BY STATES.
Return to index of stories...
IF THE LEGISLATURE FOLLOWS THROUGH ON THE GOVERNOR'S WISH FOR A 25-HUNDRED DOLLAR PAY INCREASE, THAT WOULD PUT FLORIDA ON PAR WITH THE AVERAGE FOR THE SOUTHEAST REGION.

I spoke to the wife of dargel tamayo-- he was driving the box truck for a company called dominican family shipping.
His wife says tamayo is traumatized by the accident and has actually had a hard time speaking to her about it.
She tells me her husband has no idea how cecilia douglas car hit the back of his truck. At first he thought the engine of the truck had exploded-- then he realized it was a car that hit him. He told her it was foggy outside so that may have been a factor in the accident.
There were two other people in the truck with tamayo during the crash-- he told his wife they did what he could to help rescue crews pull the girls out-- but none of them actually tried to jump into the canal to save the family because they don't know how to swim.
He also told her there were alligators near the car in the canal.
Tamayo and the other man in the car are still recovering from some minor injuries-- the woman with them suffered serious injuries because her head smashed against a window during the accident.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
GREAT WEATHER CONTINUES
It looks like several more days of quiet weather here in southwest Florida. While the northern part of the United States continues to freeze in very cold, winter weather - our forecast continues with sunshine and temperatures well into the 70's. High pressure is settling over the area again tonight and it will be a bit chilly again tomorrow morning. Lows will be around 50 degrees on the coast and inland areas will easily drop into the lower 40's tonight. No rain is expected.
Tomorrow's forecast looks mostly sunny with a high around 75 degrees. Winds will be northeast at 10 - 15 and an afternoon sea breeze may develop near the coast during the late day. Beach and boating weather look fine on Thursday with more to come for Friday and the weekend.
Forecast computer guidance shows continued warming into next week. By Monday we will be topping 80 degrees once again. The next cold front should arrive on Thursday next week and we may see some showers then. Enjoy the great weather!
