Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"A beautiful Thursday"
After a few days with mid and high level clouds blocking out our sunshine, brighter days are ahead across Southwest Florida with a series of cool mornings and warm afternoons.
Temperatures this morning started off in the upper 40s here in town with much colder readings deeper inland and across our far northern communities. With abundant sunshine in store through the late morning hours, our morning chill will quickly fade away as afternoon highs are destined to climb into the middle 70s. A light breeze out of the northeast will keep the day feeling pretty nice with comfortable humidity values.
Tonight, clear conditions will be in control of our skies, however temperatures won't be quite as cold. Overnight lows will bottom out in the lower to middle 50s with a few chillier spots east of I-75.
A nice bubble of dry high pressure will continue to settle in from the northwest through the end of the week. This will keep our weather pattern mostly sunny and free of any rain. We'll also see a gradual warming trend as this cooler airmass begins to moderate.
A weakening cool front will approach the area over the weekend and eventually wash out. With this front close by, we'll more than likely see a few more clouds dotting our sky by Friday and Saturday. Through the weekend, temperatures will warm into the upper 70s with lows in the upper 50s, with a return to the 80s by next week.

THEY'RE HAPPENING ALL OF THE TIME.
SOME CAN BE VERY CONVINCING, LIKE THIS CHECK THAT'S BEING SENT TO PEOPLE IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
EVEN THOUGH IT LOOKS LEGITIMATE, LCSO CRIME EXPERTS SAY IT HAS SCAM WRITTEN ALL OVER IT.
PKG:
THEY CAN COME OVER YOUR PHONE OR IN THE MAIL.
AND ACCORDING TO THE LEE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE, SCAMS ARE TARGETING PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.
SOT: Trisha Bissler, Crime Prevention Specialist, LSCO "We have the grandparent scam, the phone call where it's 'Oh grandma, I'm in jail or my car is broken down I need money'. There's lots of different scams through phone calls and emails, phishing scams, there's just so many we get new ones everyday."
TRISHA BISSLER IS A CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALIST WITH THE LEE COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE.
TODAY, SHE'S TEACHING PEOPLE ABOUT THESE SCAMS AND HOW TO KEEP FROM BECOMING A VICTIM.
WE BROUGHT HER A CHECK SENT TO AN NBC2 PRODUCER, THAT SHE SAYS HAS ALL THE SIGNS OF TRICKY SCAM. STARTING WITH THE NAME.
"This particular check says US Airlines, and it would be US Airways."
THE CHECK SAYS IT'S WORTH NEARLY 13-HUNDRED DOLLARS. REDEEMABLE FOR 2 ROUND TRIP TICKETS
THE PROBLEM THERE'S NO AIRLINE BY THAT NAME.
SO WE CALLED THE NUMBER ON THE CHECK.
THE PERSON ANSWERING SAID IT'S NOT A REAL CHECK, AND PEOPLE WOULD NEED TO ATTEND A PROMOTION TO RECEIVE FREE TICKETS.
WHEN ASKED MULTIPLE TIMES WHAT COMPANY THIS WAS. THEY REFUSED TO ANSWER AND HUNG UP THE PHONE.
ALL SIGNS. ACCORDING TO THESE CRIME PREVENTION SPECIALISTS, OF A SCAM. THAT COULD PUT YOU OUT OF A LOT OF MONEY.
SOT: "If it sounds too good to be true, it's probably not true, if you didn't play that game or lottery or you didn't do anything to get this check, there's no reason for you to be cashing that money."
LIVE TAG:
LSCO SAYS ANOTHER ISSUE WITH THIS CHECK IS THAT PEOPLE MAY DEPOSIT IT, THEN GO ON A SPENDING SPREE.
FINDING OUT LATER, IT WAS FRAUDULENT.
OR, THEY COULD BE USED TO LURE YOU INTO A SITUATION WHERE AGGRESSIVE SALES TACTICS WOULD BE USED TO GET YOU TO SPEND A LOT OF MONEY ON SOMETHING YOU DO NOT NEED.
LCSO SAYS IF YOU NOTICE A SCAM TO CALL THE SHERIFF'S OFFICE.

Temperatures overnight will dip down to near 50 here in town with much colder readings deeper inland and across our far northern communities. This is all due to a clear sky and a calm when. That will translate to a lot of sunshine for Friday and afternoon highs are destined to climb into the middle 70s as a result. A light breeze out of the northeast will keep the day feeling pretty nice with comfortable humidity values.
A nice bubble of dry high pressure will continue to settle in from the northwest through the end of the week. This will keep our weather pattern mostly sunny and free of any rain through the majority of next week. We'll also see a gradual warming trend as this cooler airmass begins to moderate. How do the low 80s sound as we head into February?
I'll take that any day!
A weakening cool front will approach the area for the first weekend of February. It'll eventually wash out, but the front will likely come close enough for us to see a few more clouds by Friday and Saturday. Temperatures will warm into the upper 70s during the daytime after overnight lows in the 50s.

"It's been great, I mean, you know it's a hell of an experience, really proud of the guys."
Prince Harry summing up his tour of duty in Afghanistan, landing back in the UK.
Finally able to congratulate William and Kate in person. Her pregnancy announced while Harry was away.
"I really am longing to catch up with people behind closed doors, you guys aren't invited."
Dislike of the media no doubt fueled by criticism of earlier comments where he appeared to say he'd killed Taliban fighters.Sounding perhaps a little cavalier.
"Take a life to save a life. That's what we revolve around, I suppose. If there's people trying to do bad stuff to our guys, then we'll take them out of the game I suppose."
He even compared the deadly weapons in his helicopter with video game controllers.
"There was a couple of us that got pushed forward to the front seats and the back seats - a joy for me because I am one of those people who loves playing Playstation and Xbox and so I'm good with my thumbs."
Some in the Afghan government complained. asked again, back home. Harry was more reflective.
"We are supporting the Afghan people, supporting the Afghan army / ya know, you get asked to do things, and you get asked to do things that you'd expect to do, wearing this uniform, and that's as simple as that really."
"This week we've been left with the impression that Harry still isn't all that comfortable with royal life. One newspaper even described the soldier prince as at war with himself. Keir Simmons, NBC News, London."

AN INFLATABLE DOLL IN A PARTY DRESS LYING IN BED. SURROUNDED BY EMPTY WINE AND PILL BOTTLES. IS CREATING QUITE THE CONTROVERSY.
"It's shocking. I ain't never seen nothing display like that in Coeburn."
THE MESSAGE: YOU NEVER SEND ME FLOWERS ANY MORE.
"What we were really trying to say is, this poor girl is in the window. in her bed, drinking and taking her pill and going to sleep to try to forget about Valentine's Day, because no one sent her flowers."
THE OWNERS, EDWARD STURGILL AND ELIJAH PENN, TELL ME THE THE WINDOW IS AN EXAGGERATION TO ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO SEND FLOWERS AND MAKE SOMEONE HAPPY ON FEBRUARY 14TH.
"A lot of the people are just looking at the negativity of it and dwelling on the negativity and not trying to see the whole picture."
"It's just a gimmick. That's all it is."
I LEARNED THE WINDOW DISPLAY AT "THE FLOWER BED" SHOP WAS SET UP ABOUT A WEEK AGO.
BUT ON MONDAY. THE COMMUNITY STARTED TO SPEAK OUT ON FACEBOOK. SAYING IT WAS TOO PROVOCATIVE.
"We live in the bible belt here and. it's really comes against our views and our values here."
"Sturgill tells me they have made a couple of changes to his, window display including removing a couple of the pill bottles and wine bottles."
"We did not want people to think we were promoting suicide or alcoholism."
"We never meant to offend a single person."
STURGILL SAYS NOTHING IN THE WINDOW IS ILLEGAL AND HE CONSIDERS HIS DISPLAYS TO BE MODERN. CUTTING EDGE. AND THOUGHT PROVOKING.
"If people walk by your windows and continue walking by them, you've done absolutely nothing to inspire them to think or have a thought or come to an emotional catharsis of any kind."
AND THE REASON FOR USING AN INFLATABLE DOLL?
"It was $20 at Spencers as compared to a $250 mannequin."
AND FOR NOW. SHE'S THERE TO STAY.
"This is our window. We're gonna keep it."
