"Turning breezy and cooler with more sunshine"
After several days in the 80s, changes are coming to Southwest Florida as a cold front moved through the area earlier this morning. Through the mid day hours, a couple of lingering spotty showers are still possible, with clearing skies as we go throughout the rest of our day. Temperatures will hover into the 60s through the lunchtime hour, however with more sunshine in store later today afternoon highs will climb near 70°.
With winds taking more of a northwesterly turn, cooler and drier air will be able to filter down the state. These winds will be a bit on the breezy side with wind gusts closing in on 25mph. This will make temperatures in the upper 60s to low 70s feel even cooler than that.
Through the evening, temperatures will fall pretty quickly under clear skies with most of the area in the middle 40s first thing Friday. It's even possible to see a few upper 30s deeper inland and across our far northern communities.
High pressure will build in from the northwest with a tranquil weather pattern setting up for Friday with plenty of sunshine. Highs will stay in the lower 70s and humidity levels will be rather low making it feel very comfortable during the day.
It will be another beautiful weekend here across Southwest Florida with chilly mornings and milder afternoons. Morning lows will hover in the upper 40s to low 50s, while daytime highs climb into the middle 70s under mostly sunny skies. Our warming trend will continue through the middle of next week as temperatures warm back into the upper 70s by Wednesday.

U.S. STOCKS ARE FLIRTING WITH ALL-TIME HIGHS AS RETAIL INVESTORS BEGIN TO WARM UP TO STOCKS AND PUSH EQUITY MUTUAL FUND-FLOWS POSITIVE FOR THE FIRST TIME IN 22 MONTHS.
OUR WELLS FARGO ADVISOR NICK CHLUMSKY IS HERE TODAY --
AND NICK, WITH THE MARKET ON THE UP-AND-UP. DO YOU THINK IT'S TOO LATE FOR INVESTORS TO ENJOY HEALTHY RETURNS MOVING FORWARD?
Return to index of stories...
You know, I'm still searching for that magic crystal ball to answer all those types of questions for you all. But I really think we need to study some market history as well as take a look at what's going on in the current economic and market environment to best answer that question.
Return to index of stories...
So first, a little look at history and some anecdotal evidence. Earlier this month, we talked about two indicators that have given investors a pretty accurate forecast on whether markets will be up or down for the year.
The first of these was January's First Five Days which has been kind of an early warning system for investors. And basically, looking back over 60 years, when the first five days of January were positive, the market ended up for the year 84.6% of the time. This January 2013, the first five days were up 2.2%. So this gives us some reason to be positive for stocks in 2013.
The second historical indicator has been the January Barometer which states that as the S&P 500 goes in January, so goes the year. And this indicator has registered an accuracy ratio of 88.7% since 1950. Well, here we are, the last day of January and the markets are already up over 5% year to date. So from a historical point of view, this indicator also confirms that there's a good likelihood that we'll see stocks higher by the end of the year.
But I think we also need to look at what's going on in the economy, the markets, politics in Washington and current Federal Reserve Policy to determine what the likelihood is that stocks will continue to rally.
First the economy. Although we saw a slight contraction in 4th quarter 2012 GDP, economic indicators including housing, manufacturing, and employment data appear to be trending positively which should bode well for markets looking out 6 to 8 months. Additionally, there seems to be consensus that our economy will continue to grow throughout 2013, albeit below the historical average.
Second, the stock market has continued to show resiliency in the face of many political and fiscal challenges, the most significant of these being the fiscal cliff at the end of last year and the looming debt ceiling and government budget cuts in the next several months. Additionally, it appears that retail investors are now beginning to wade into the stock market which could signal the beginnings of a migration of some of the trillions of dollars in cash coming off of the sidelines and into the market.
· And last, the Federal Reserve has pledged to keep rates at near-zero for an extended period of time, for at least the next couple of years, which will eventually force investors to venture into areas of higher yields and higher returns like dividend paying stocks.
Return to index of stories...
So given the current economic and market environment, the prospects for GDP growth in 2013, and a zero-interest rate environment, we feel that investors still have an opportunity to enjoy healthy returns in the stock market down the road.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY MAY BE LINKED TO A HIGHER RISK OF MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.
M-S IS USUALLY DIAGNOSED IN ADULTHOOD.
NOW RESEARCHERS SAY THE NEUROLOGICAL DISEASE IS MORE COMMON IN OBESE CHILDREN -- ESPECIALLY GIRLS.
THEIR DATA SHOWED OBESE GIRLS WERE THREE TO FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY TO DEVELOP M-S AS A TEENAGER.
BUT RESEARCHERS SAY THIS DOESN'T PROVE EXTRA WEIGHT CAUSES MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS.

A POSITIVE PREGNANCY TEST IS LIKELY GREETED BY A JUBILANT MOM-TO BE - BUT DID YOU KNOW IT'S POSSIBLE FOR A MAN TO TAKE THE TEST AND GET A POSITIVE RESULT TOO?

SINCE THE LATE 1970s WOMEN HAVE BEEN HOME TESTING TO FIND OUT IF THEY'RE PREGNANT.
THE TELLTALE MARKER SPEAKS VOLUMES.
DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST
RUNS:
5:51 Pregnancy tests work by picking up BETA HCG, which is a hormone by women during pregnancy.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
Meant for female use, the test has implications beyond what you'd expect for men. In fact, it's possible that a man can test positive- but the results have nothing to do with a baby.
DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST
RUNS:
5:51 BETA HCG is not normally made up by men, however with testicular cancer there can be a development of cells that are not normally growing or active in normal men. But as those cells become malignant they may revert back to some of the more primitive functions and they may make BETA HCG. So you can certainly have a positive pregnancy test as a man if you have testicular cancer that has HCG.
THERE HAVE BEEN CASES, AS RECENT AS LAST FALL, WHEN A MAN DISCOVERED HIS TESTICULAR CANCER AFTER TAKING A PREGNANCY TEST AS A JOKE.
DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST
RUNS:
8:06 At the hospital a lot of times if I have a testicular cancer patient I'll order BETA HCG and they'll run a pregnancy test and it will come back positive.
WHILE IT MAY BE POSITIVE INDICATOR, USING A PREGNANCY TEST AS A CANCER SCREENER IS GETTING NEGATIVE REVIEWS.
DR. FRANK RODRIGUEZ/ONCOLOGIST
RUNS:
7:21 If you're a man and you're between the ages of 17 and probably 35 it's probably not a bad idea to do self testicular exams and if you find an abnormality or nodule certainly bring it up with your primary care doctor. Which I think, is a much more effective way of screening for cancer then buying pregnancy tests.

FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
