The agonizing plight of 5-year old boy named Ethan continues in southwestern
Alabama. The little boy, who is believed to have autism, is a prisoner in a
eight by six foot bunker, four feet underground. held captive by this
man, 65-year old James Lee Dykes. Authorities released his picture on Friday
.
SOT Mayor Virgil Skipper, Midland City, Alabama
"That's an innocent kid, let him go back to his parents, he's crying for his
parents and his grandparents."
Above the bunker, a swarm of deputies is standing by. communicating with
the hostage taker and dropping medicine down to Ethan though a p-v-c pipe.
SOT Sheriff Wally Olson, Dale County, Alabama
"Please continue to be patient with us and continue to pray for a safe
conclusion to this incident."
Experts say negotiators are trying to gain trust with Dykes and that they
won't do anything to agitate him, like cutting off power or funneling
sleeping gas down the pipe.
NATS
The hostage drama began Tuesday, when Dykes stormed a school bus in the town
of Midland, and snatched Ethan.
SOT Michael Senn, Pastor, Midway Assembly of God
"He wanted two children between the ages of 6 and 8."
And he might have taken more children if the bus driver, Charles Poland, had
not heroically fought back, opening the back door so the other kids could
escape before Dykes shot him to death.
SOT Marvin Skipper, Bus Driver's Brother-in-Law
"He showed the love for those kids cause he gave his life."
SOT Michael Senn
"To be able to stand between a shooter and his children on his bus, surely
this man died an American hero."

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
NICE WEEKEND AHEAD
As promised, we certainly felt a drop in temperatures this morning and today. Lows were in the 40's along the coast and inland areas did manage to drop into the 30's this morning. Tonight will be another mainly clear evening with a light breeze from the northeast. Temperatures will fall into the 40's once again on Saturday morning - in the same places as last night. I also expect another round of mid and upper 30's in the colder inland spots again tomorrow morning.
The daytime high temperatures will recover to the mid and lower 70's on Saturday and there will be plenty of sunshine during the day. It looks like we will hold on to the pattern of chilly morning temperatures and mild, sunny days through the weekend and into next week.
A weak weather disturbance riding across Florida next Wednesday should increase the clouds on that day, but rain chances stay very low. All-in-all the weather forecast here in beautiful southwest Florida should stay very nice through next week.
