WX HEADLINE-WX CENTER

The first weekend of February will shape up to be a cool and seasonable one across Southwest Florida.

To Start off our Groundhog Day we had quite the chill back in the air this morning with temperatures dipping into the 40s, and as we go through our Saturday, temperatures will stay rather cool and seasonable; by noon temperatures will start to climb into the mid to upper 60s, and then we'll top out in the mid 70s for those daytime highs.

Look for clear skies and wall to wall sunshine today, which will set up another clear, cool night.

Humidity will stay incredibly low today and Sunday, and winds should relax quite a bit compared to the gusty weather we had yesterday. In fact, if you're planning a trip out in the boat this weekend, today will likely offer the best boating conditions as winds begin to subside this afternoon producing seas at 2 feet or less and inland waters at a light to moderate chop. The Gulf of Mexico is quite chilly, though, with the average water temperatures at 65°.

For Super Bowl Sunday, we'll have another cool start in the morning with temperatures dropping into the low 50s and upper 40s. Sunshine will dominate our sky once again, sending afternoon temperatures into the mid 70s. Winds will become more northerly Sunday coming in at 5-15 mph with some higher gusts.

Our quiet and cool weather pattern will continue into next week with more sunshine expected Monday and highs in the low to mid 70s. We'll even see our overnight temperatures get cooler once again as a fresh batch of cool air comes in from the north, lowering temperatures back into the mid to upper 40s both Monday and Tuesday morning.

By midweek, cloud cover will likely increase as a weather system crosses the state on Wednesday. Moisture will be lacking, however, so rain chances are looking pretty slim as the next weather system passes through.

For the second half of the upcoming week, temperatures will start to warm up once again as daytime highs get back to around 80 from Wednesday through Friday.

Aside from the extra cloud cover around Wednesday, we should be mostly sunny through the next several days with fairly pleasant weather expected across Southwest Florida through the first week of February. Return to index of stories...

JESSICA YELLIN REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

BIRTH CONTROL COMPROMISE-PKG

OBAMA ADMINISTRATION OFFICIALS SAY PROPOSED NEW GUIDELINES WOULD ENSURE WOMEN GET CONTRACEPTION FOR FREE, AND NO OBJECTING RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR IT -- A SEEMINGLY PERFECT COMPROMISE.

"We had to ensure that women had access to preventive services like contraception and that the policy also respects religious beliefs "

THE POLICY WOULD ALLOW A SELF-INSURED RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION, LIKE A CATHOLIC UNIVERSITY, TO OPT OUT OF PROVIDING BIRTH CONTROL.

ANOTHER INSURANCE COMPANY WOULD GIVE EMPLOYEES BIRTH CONTROL FOR FREE.

"This just clarifies that there aren't going to be some women who get this benefit and some women who don't. All women in America, through their insurance coverage, are going to have access to birth control without a co-pay, no matter where they work or where they live."

NOT EVERYONE SEES THIS AS A WIN-WIN.

"It leaves an awful lot of the conscience and moral objection concerns and coverage. The private sector doesn't gain protections."

THE U.S. CONFERENCE OF CATHOLIC BISHOPS IS RESERVING JUDGMENT WHILE IT STUDIES THE 80-PAGE GUIDELINES, BUT IN STATEMENTS, THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF EVANGELICALS RIPPED THE POLICY AS ".BAD NEWS FOR ALL WHO LOVE RELIGIOUS FREEDOM," SAYING, "THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION SHOULD HAVE DONE THE RIGHT THING AND DROPPED THE CONTRACEPTION MANDATE."

.AND THE FAMILY VALUES ORGANIZATION, CONCERNED WOMEN FOR AMERICA, SLAMMED IT AS A "BLATANT ATTEMPT TO MISLEAD. ANDTRAMPLE THE RELIGIOUS LIBERTIES OF AMERICANS."

"Religious liberty will be protected, and a law that requires free preventive care will not discriminate against women." Return to index of stories...

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The first weekend of February will shape up to be a cool and seasonable one across Southwest Florida.

ITS OFTEN BEEN LINKED TO SPORTS FIGURES,

BUT A TORN MENISCUS CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE.

IN FACT, SOME PEOPLE MAY NOT KNOW THEY HAVE ONE.

IN OUR HEALTH MATTERS REPORT,

AMY OSHIER RUNS THROUGH COMMON CAUSES AND TREATMENTS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH BEAT PKG-PKG

WHEN A HIGH PROFILE ATHLETE IS TAKEN DOWN BY A TORN MENISCUS IT MAKES NEWS, AND MAKES MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE IT'S PRIMARILY JOCKS WHO SUFFER THIS INJURY. THAT'S JUST NOT THE CASE.

DR. JAMES BYNUM/ORTHOPEDIC SPORTS MEDICINE

RUNS:

3:40 It's extremely common and happens to almost patients of any age. We'll see it in children as young as six, seven, eight sometimes. But even older patients up to 80s and 90s.

THE MENISCUS IS A CUSHION OF CARTILAGE IN THE KNEE THAT PROVIDES PADDING AND STABILITY. IT CAN TEAR AS THE RESULT OF AN INJURY- FROM TWISTING OR A SUDDEN STOP.

DR. JAMES BYNUM/ORTHOPEDIC SPORTS MEDICINE

RUNS:

4:20 Sometimes patients will feel a pop. Oftentimes they can tell you where it hurts with one finger pointing to one side or the other of the knee. It's often associated with a lot of swelling and a lot of popping, clicking.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Other times tears result from chronic degeneration.Cartilage weakens and frays over time, so older people can tear a meniscus just doing everyday activities- especially if they're overweight because that puts excess stress on their joints.

STUDIES FOUND THE ELDERLY MAY NOT EXPERIENCE PAIN FROM MINOR TEARS, MEANING THEY DON'T ALWAYS NEED SURGERY.

DR. JAMES BYNUM/ORTHOPEDIC SPORTS MEDICINE

RUNS:

1:57 We treat it without surgery if the tears are small. But a lot of times we have to do what's called an arthroscopy, where we go in through the small incision with the camera. And most of the time, if the tear is not too big we just take out the part that's torn.

DEPENDING ON THE SIZE AND LOCATION, SURGEONS MAY BE ABLE TO REPAIR THE CARTILAGE.

DR. JAMES BYNUM/ORTHOPEDIC SPORTS MEDICINE

RUNS:

2:19 We're sewing the torn meniscus back to the capsule or the wall inside the knee and leaving it still long enough for it to heal. From simple sutures to some devices that have basically like little cufflinks that we poke through the capsule.

MENDING THE TATTERED KNEE IS A COMMON AND RELIABLE PROCEDURE.ONE THAT CAN HELP PEOPLE GET BACK UP AND MOVING. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER Return to index of stories...

FIRST WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The first weekend of February will shape up to be a cool and seasonable one across Southwest Florida.

PROTESTERS TAKE THEIR GRIEVANCES STRAIGHT TO THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN CAIRO

AS SOME EGYPTIANS LOSE FAITH IN THEIR LEADERSHIP AND IN THE OPPOSITION.

FOR HOURS THEY'VE BEEN CLASHING WITH RIOT POLICE AND IN SOME CASES IT HAS BEEN BRUTAL -

ONE VIDEO SHOWED A MAN BEING BEATEN BY EGYPTIAN POLICE

BEN WEDEMAN IS IN THE EGYPTIAN CAPITAL WITH AN UPDATE. Return to index of stories...

EGYPT:PROTESTERS-PKG

Riot police beat a semi-naked man to ground, images captured live on Egyptian television of a protest turned violent in Cairo.

.while flames lick at the gates of Cairos Al-Ittihadiya Palace, official seat of the Egyptian Presidency

A young man shoots fireworks over the walls of the palace, covered in anti-Muslim Brotherhood graffiti fireworks not in celebration but in contempt of their president - the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Morsi.

THIS PERSON IS BAD, AND LIAR

HES A LIAR, HE'S A BIG LIAR.

The people want to topple the regime, a familiar refrain in a country where the head of state does not rest easy.

The demonstration started, not quietly but peacefully, thousands of young and old, men and women, making their way toward the palace. At least here Egypt's spirit of revolution shows no signs of flagging

DICTATOR AFTER DICTATOR, this young man chants. MOHAMED MORSI YOUR TURN IS NEXT.

Morsi won more than fifty percent of the vote in Egypt's first ever presidential elections last spring. Professor Said An-Nashai voted for Morsi but now wants him to give up power.

IT IS A DOG WHO IS HOLDING TO A PIECE OF MEAT, LIKE A MAD DOG, WHO INSISTS, THAT CAUSES VIOLENCE, ALL THE VIOLENCE THAT HAPPENS TIL NOW IS CAUSED BY THE SYSTEM, BY THE REGIME.

Cairo has never been a Brotherhood stronghold and in the brave new Egypt the people don't hesitate to take it to the top.

ONCE UPON A TIME THE EGYPTIAN PRESIDENT LIVED IN A BUBBLE. HE DIDN'T HEAR WHAT HE DIDN'T WANT TO HEAR, HE DIDNT SEE WHAT HE DIDNT WANT TO SEE. THAT BUBBLE HAS BURST.

Behind the bored police recruits, behind the armoured vehicles, Mohamed Morsi was inside and may have heard the chants for him to go.

But along with anger at the president is mounting frustration with the opposition, led by the National Salvation Front.

IT'S TOTALLY NONSENSE. POLITICAL DIALOGUE, ARE YOU KIDDING ME? THE SALVATION FRONT ARE ABSOLUTELY DOING NOTHING AND THEY TOTALLY DON'T HAVE ANY CONTROL OVER EGYPTIANS. THOSE EGYPTIANS GO TO THE STREETS BY THEMSELVES.

And they don't appear to be ready to leave the streets any time soon. Return to index of stories...

He's the big hunka love bear!

"Four and a half feet of Vermont Teddy Bear awesome-ness," Vice President of

Brand Marketing for Vermont Teddy Bear, Jay Bruns said.

But this Vermont Teddy Bear is one of a kind. In his hands is a Perrywinkle'

s six carat diamond ring set in platinum.

"This is a unique, one of a kind cognac colored, fire-rose diamond," Jevan

Fox said, Perrywinkle's Diamond Consultant.

For the two Vermont based businesses, Valentine's Day is the busiest time of

year, so combining their expertise only seemed natural. The collaboration

is creating quite the stir on the streets!

"Diamonds are a girl's best friend!" Two women yelled.

Another said, "Haha, they'd be saying, ya hooo!"

People all across the nation have expressed interest in the perhaps best

valentine's day gift ever!.or the "I'm sure she'll say yes engagement

ring!"

"They love the idea of having a big bear to make a big reaction and a big

impact on Valentine's Day," Bruns said.

So for the gentlemen. or the ladies, with $30,000 in their pocket looking

to make a big impression, this may be the answer!

"Romantic, but crazy none the less," a woman said as she laughed.

That is, if your someone special is worthy.

"Well you'd have to be special to be the recipient of the ring."

But some people say their love doesn't cost a thing!

"I think there's too many other things you can do for somebody to show them

that you love them, I don't think you need to do a $30,000 bear."

"Would that impress you?" A man asked the woman he was with. She said, "No

gosh!" Return to index of stories...

GOOD MORNING 3-1 SHOT

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME BACK TO THE FINAL HALF HOUR OF NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M JOE ROETZ

AND I'M KELLY CRESWELL

WE'LL HAVE YOUR TOP STORIES OF THE DAY IN JUST ONE MINUTE.

BUT FIRST YOUR FIRST ALERT FORECAST WITH METEOROLOGIST, JASON DUNNING. Return to index of stories...
