GREKOS MEDICAL LICENSE WAS SUSPENDED BACK IN FEBRARY AFTER A SECOND PATIENT DIED SHORLTY AFTER BEING INJECTED WITH STEM CELLS.
TODAY WE FOUND OUT THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH WANTS GREKOS' MEDICAL LICENSE REVOKED FOR GOOD.
Return to index of stories...
A four day hearing in october over accusations of medical malpractice.
Bonita springs doctor zannos grekos is accused by the department of health of performing a deadly and negligent experimental stem cell treatment.
In 2010-- 69-year-old domenica fitzgerald died after dr grekos injected stem cells into her brain. Fitzgerald was suffering from nerve damage caused by chemotherapy-- she hoped stem cell therapy would cure her.
Expert witnesses testified that the treatment was "highly dangerous, lacked the patients consent and was not justified."
Sot from doctor testifying at trial:
":50 I wouldn't have given this to a dog let alone a human being."
They supported the department of health argument against grekos-- saying the procedure had a "complete lack of medical foundation" "That only had risk with no possible benefit and that was guaranteed to fail."
Grekos' patients stood up for their doctor-- testifying about how the stem cell treatment that changed their lives.
Now the florida department of health has issued their recommendation to the judge-- asking him to revoke grekos' medical license and fine him $40 thousand dollars.
We spoke to fitzgeralds daughter over the phone today--
Phoner with Jacqueline fitzgerald-groden, patients daughter: "3:45 right now were kind of numb. We just want closure we just want be able to mourn my mother49"
She says the family wants to make sure grekos never practices medicine again.
"4:05 we would like his license taken away so that he can't hurt anybody else 13"
Return to index of stories...
DID ALSO SPEAK TO SOME OF GREKOS PATIENTS OVER PHONE-- THEY SAY THEY THINK THIS RECOMMENDATION IS OUTRAGEOUS AND SAY IT WOULD BE A HUGE LOSS TO THE COMMUNITY IF GREKOS' LICENSE IS REVOKED. I REACHED OUT TO GREKOS' ATTORNEY, HE DECLINED TO COMMENT. HE HAS UNTIL TOMORROW TO SUBMIT HIS RECOMMENDATION TO THE JUDGE. THEN JUDGE WILL HAVE 30 DAYS TO RULE ON CASE.
Return to index of stories...
LAST FEBRUARY, THE STATE SUSPENDED GREKOS' LICENSE AFTER HE AND ANOTHER PHYSICIAN, DR. KONSTANTINE YANKOPOLUS, PERFORMED A SIMILAR STEM CELL THERAPY ON A 77-YEAR-OLD MAN, RICHARD POLING.
HE WENT INTO CARDIAC ARREST IN GREKOS' PRACTICE AND LATER DIED AT A LOCAL HOSPITAL.
A JOINT ADMINISTRATIVE HEARING FOR BOTH DOCTORS WILL BE HELD IN THAT CASE, TENTATIVELY IN FEBRUARY, BUT A MOTION IS PENDING FOR A CONTINUATION.

THIS STORY GOT US THINKING ABOUT THE CONTROVERSY SURROUNDING STEM CELL TREATMENTS.
SO WE TOOK A CLOSER LOOK AT THE FUTURE OF THE PRACTICE.
RIGHT NOW, MANY TREATMENTS ARE STILL IN EXPERIMENTAL STAGES AND ARE VERY EXPENSIVE.
BUT IN THE FUTURE--
STEM CELLS COULD BE THE KEY TO CURING OR AT LEAST IMPROVING THE LIVES OF PEOPLE WITH SERIOUS DISEASES, INCLUDING PARKINSON'S, ALZHEIMER'S, SPINAL CORD INJURIES, HEART DISEASE, AND EVEN DIABETES AND ARTHRITIS.

IT LOOKS QUIET -
BUT EXTREME CHANGES ARE HAPPENING IN LEE COUNTY GOVERNMENT.
IN A MEMO TO STAFF - INTERIM COUNTY MANAGER DOUG MEURER SAYS
"…there are areas within county operations that need additional focus and a fresh look…"
Our customers need proper service. In his establishing moving folks around so that customer service comes out, I'm thrilled.
THE COUNTY MANAGER'S FRESH LOOK MEANS PROMOTING 3 EMPLOYEES TO A NEWLY CREATED POSITION - ACTING ASSISTANT COUNTY MANAGER.
THAT UPS THE NUMBER OF ASSISTANT COUNTY MANAGERS TO 5.
MEURER SAYS IT LOWERS THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE ONLY TWO ASSISTANT MANAGERS - WHO OVERSEE A COMBINED TOTAL OF NINETEEN DEPARTMENTS.
What I'm looking for is a better way to manage services. So citizens get great service without extra costs.
BUT THIS *DOES COME WITH A PRICE TAG -
IN A STATEMENT - MEURER SAYS
"There will be increases in pay for the four being given added duties. The positions will be considered temporary for now. If expectations are met, consideration to make them permanent will be given."
LEAVING LINGERING QUESTIONS FOR COUNTY COMMISSIONER CECIL PENDERGRASS.
What are our savings? Hopefully with the restructure it will save us other costs through the county.
COMMUNITY ACTIVIST ANTHONY THOMAS SAYS THE ADDITIONS ARE A BAD MOVE.
I think all this beaurocracy does nothing to help the person on the street. Or improve efficiency in government. It just creates more beaurocracy.

AD LIB WEATHER TEASE
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
WARM DAYS ON THE WAY
We had a warm and mostly sunny Wednesday which is a sign of things to come.
Why? Well let me explain…
We're tracking a cool front moving through Florida, but this front will lose its battle with an area of high pressure. It'll ultimately fade away before having a chance to make it all the way to Southwest Florida.
Without a front moving in, the result will be continued warmth and increasing humidity for us over the next several days. Don't worry I'll also add in a mix of sun and clouds.
Despite the increasing humidity, however, rain prospects will keep running pretty low with the exception of a couple stray, lonely showers Friday afternoon, but rain really won't be a factor in our forecast all the way through the weekend.
There's indications in some of our long-range forecast models that another cool front will be in play for us by the middle of next week, but in the meantime the warm weather rolls along. It looks as though our daytime temperatures will keep climbing into the low to mid 80s through early next week while our overnight temps only cool down to the low to mid 60s.
