Two weather systems will continue merging over the East Coast on Friday as a low pressure system over the Great Lakes moves into the Northeast and another system moves northward up the coast. This will pull abundant moisture onshore, while the system to the north will keep the region cool. This will create heavy snow showers from New York through Maine. Snowfall totals will range from 5 to 10 inches, with snowfall rates up to 1 inch per hour through Saturday evening. Expect snow to turn to freezing rain and rain showers along the southern side of these systems across the Tennessee Valley and moving through the Appalachians. Strong winds with gusts from 60 to 70 mph will accompany this system, thus, Hurricane Force Wind Advisories have been issued for the coastal areas of the Northeast. These strong winds will also create blizzard conditions across the Northeast with poor visibility and white out conditions. Please take caution when traveling. Storm totals through the weekend will range from 12 to 18 inches in parts of upstate New York, with 2 to 3 feet possible from Connecticut to Maine.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"Clearing skies through the day"
The showers that moved in overnight and early this morning were associated with a weak cold front currently sweeping across the peninsula. Through the mid day hours, clouds will continue to linger across our skies with a nice clearing trend from north to south throughout the afternoon. Despite the passage of a weak cold front, afternoon highs will warm into the upper 70s to 80° 80s as we add in a bit more sunshine for the second half of the day.
Once the front clears Southwest Florida, a slightly cooler and drier airmass will begin to filter down the state. You'll notice the change early Saturday morning as lows will have bottomed out in the upper 50s here in town with lower to middle 50s across our inland and northern cool spots.
High pressure will be building in for the weekend and this will set the stage for a beautiful Saturday under mostly sunny skies. Even though temperatures will recover into the 80s, our afternoons will feel quite pleasant with comfortable humidity values. Our mainly dry weather pattern will stay firmly in place through the first half of the week with plenty of sunshine and highs in the lower to middle 80s.
By Wednesday, we'll be tracking another cold front moving across the "Sunshine State" with the potential for another round of rain and a cool down by the end of next week.

IT'S EASY! AND ONLINE SHOPPING IS SUPPOSED TO BE CHEAPER …RIGHT?
AN INVESTIGATION BY THE WALL STREET JOURNAL SAYS SOME STORES ARE RAISING OR LOWERING THEIR PRICES DEPENDING ON WHERE YOU LOG IN, YOUR ZIP CODE, AND EVEN WHICH TYPE OF COMPUTER YOU USE. IN FACT, ON STAPLES-DOT-COM, A STAPLER WAS OFFERED AT 15-79 FOR ONE ONLINE CUSTOMER, BUT ANOTHER ONLINE CUSTOMER WAS OFFERED IT FOR MORE THAN A DOLLAR LESS.
THE JOURNAL REPORTS STAPLES-DOT-COM CHANGES ONLINE PRICES BASED ON WHAT IT BELIEVES IS YOUR PROXIMITY TO ITS STORES. ZIP CODES WHOSE CENTER WAS FURTHER THAN 20 MILES FROM A STAPLES COMPETITOR SAW HIGHER PRICES 67-PERCENT OF THE TIME. BUT ZIP CODES WITHIN 20 MILES OF A RIVAL SAW THE HIGH PRICE ONLY 12-PERCENT OF THE TIME. STAPLES-DOT-COM SHOWED HIGHER PRICES 86-PERCENT OF THE TIME WHEN THE ZIP CODE ACTUALLY HAD A STORE NEARBY, BUT WAS FAR FROM A COMPETITORS' STORE.

IMAGINE FINDING A SINGLE CANCER CELL AMONG A HUGE SAMPLE OF HEALTHY CELLS. IT'S NEXT GENERATION CANCER TECHNOLOGY BEING USED IN THE REAL WORLD.
DR. LOWELL HART/ONCOLOGIST/HEMATOLOGIST
RUNS:
13:07 We now have a molecular test that can find one leukemia cell in like 100,000 normal cells. Very, very accurate. Which is fantastic way to follow patients.
SINCE LEUKEMIA IS A BLOOD CANCER, IT IS LOGICAL TO TEST FOR IT IN THE BLOOD. NOW DOCTORS ARE LOOKING FOR WAYS TO DETECT MINUTE BLOOD CELLS THAT HAVE BROKEN AWAY FROM A PRIMARY TUMOR AND ARE CIRCULATING IN THE BLOODSTREAM. THEY'RE CALLED CIRCULATING TUMOR CELLS OR CTCs
DR. LOWELL HART/ONCOLOGIST/HEMATOLOGIST
RUNS:
13:42 Tumors will sometimes shed cancer cells in the blood stream sometimes not.
PROSTATE CANCER PATIENTS MAY BENEFIT FROM TESTS THAT SCREEN FOR CIRCULATING TUMOR CELLS.
DR. LOWELL HART/ONCOLOGIST/HEMATOLOGIST
RUNS:
13:42 You put 7 1/2 CC's of blood through a flow cytometry machine and it's pretty accurate for picking out how things are doing. It's not good enough to diagnose the cancer for someone who walks off the street, but if a man has prostate cancer if that number of CTC's is going down you know they are responding to treatment. And if it's going up they're probably not responding.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
For decades, doctors have relied on biopsies and snapshots like CAT scans to track the progress of cancer. This new line of blood testing offers a less invasive way monitor disease and find out what's working.
DR. LOWELL HART/ONCOLOGIST/HEMATOLOGIST
RUNS:
14:35 These tests will let us get away from doing so many CAT scans and giving everybody this radiation exposure. There really is tremendous effort towards making them more specific and being able to tell what's going on inside.

17:52 Both prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women tend to metastasize. So if they travel and metastasize, they very often go to the bone and therefore to the blood stream. Colon cancer a little less so.
IT MAY BE YEARS AWAY, BUT ONCOLOGISTS HOPE TO SOMEDAY DIAGNOSE CANCER, THROUGH A SIMPLE BLOOD TEST. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM I'M AMY OSHIER.

FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...

THIS LITTLE BALL OF FUR SEEMS LIKE ANY OTHER PUP.
SHE CHEWS.
SHE CUDDLES.
AND SHE RUNS.
"it's just lots of fun, she's so playful all the time."
BUT THERE'S SOMETHING DIFFERENT ABOUT LILY.
SHE'S MISSING A PAW.
"I really wanted to get a pet that could work along side me that could help my patients. She did seem like the perfect choice."
IT WAS A COMPLICATION DURING HER BIRTH.AND OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST HEATHER MULLINS IS HOPING TO TURN IT INTO A POSITIVE FOR HER PATIENTS.
"We actually get many people like that who had amputations for multiple reasons and are learning to walk on prosthetics."
MULLIN IS TRAINING LILY TO BE A THERAPY DOG.
TECHNICIANS FITTED HER FOR HER VERY OWN PROSTHETIC PAW.
"it's challenging. My dad and I did one for a cow years ago and it worked pretty well."
"it's not common. Most people find it easier and less expensive to remove the limb."
BUT THEY BELIEVE THE NEW PAW WILL MAKE THIS PUP A SPECIAL ASSET TO THE GROUP.
"when you do something like this for an animal. Especially in this case. It if works out for her, she'll be a therapy dog to show people it's something you can get along with."
"because people can relate to her by seeing her disability and seeing how happy she is."
BUT ULTIMATELY IT IS FOR LILY TO DECIDE IF SHE WANTS TO WEAR IT.
"it's all up to lily. All up to lily whether she'll tolerate it. All up to lily whether she'll walk on it."
