Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
We've got a fantastic weekend of weather on the way across Southwest Florida featuring very pleasant temperatures, plentiful sunshine, and comfortable humidity.
We'll get our Saturday started with temperatures a little on the cool side with most locations in the mid to upper 50s around sunrise, but we'll warm up nicely through the day with daytime highs projected to reach the low 80s.
Sunshine will be our main weather player as only a few fair-weather clouds develop through the day. Rain won't really be a factor in our forecast through the weekend either as our rain chance remains below 10% through early next week.
The wind will stay fairly breezy through the weekend as it becomes more easterly today with gusts up to 15-10 mph; by Sunday the wind will become more southeasterly with gusts getting up to 20 mph.
Our overnight temperatures will stay fairly cool for the next couple of mornings. On Sunday morning we'll start with temperatures in the mid to upper 50s, and on Monday morning our lows will dip into the upper 50s and low 60s.
As we head into early next week, we'll stay warm and dry with lots of sunshine through Tuesday. Temperatures will stay quite warm as well with daytime highs climbing all the way into the mid 80s under a partly cloudy sky. Our forecast could get a little interesting in terms of rain prospects Wednesday as a cool front slides down the Florida peninsula and stalls out over South Florida. If this scenario pans out, the stalled front may bring a few days of rainy weather from Wednesday through Friday.

A REVOLUTIONARY NEW AIR FORCE LOGISTICS AND SUPPLY COMPUTER MANAGEMENT SYSTEM WAS SUPPOSED TO SAVE MONEY.
INSTEAD, MANY YEARS AND A BILLION DOLLARS LATER, CRITICS SAY IT BECAME AMONG WORST CASES OF PENTAGON WASTE.
NBC'S LISA MYERS REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
It was supposed to be the Air Force's revolutionary new computer system.to track everything from planes.to spare parts.to bombs.to when a refueling tanker is in need of maintenance.
Called the Expeditionary Combat Support System, the idea was to SAVE BILLIONS of dollars by combining 240 existing computer systems--some from the 70s-- into a single system for buying and managing everything.
Instead, after 7 years, and $1 billion, the Air Force has pulled the plug, stating the program "has not yielded any significant military capability."
Sen. John McCain wrote the pentagon, calling it "one of the most egregious examples of mismanagement in recent memory."
010226McCain: A billion dollars has been basically totally wasted with nothing to show for it.
LM: Just flushed down the drain.
010233McCain: Flushed down the drain.
010727LM: A lot of Americans remember the infamous 600 dollar toilet seat. Is this even worse than that?
010744 I don't mean to make a joke but at least they got a toilet seat. Out of this, they got nothing. They got nothing.
So what went wrong?
**17:14:20 you had a company that wasn't up to the task of managing the project. You had a computer system that wasn't actually able to do the job, and you had an air force that was asleep at the switch.
A top executive for the lead contractor--Computer Sciences Corporation or CSC--told NBC NEWS that it provided the Air Force "with capabilities and assets.to deliver the system of the future" and that taxpayers got their money's worth.
An Air Force official sees it differently.
010330 I am personally appalled at the limited capabilities that program has produced relative to that amount of investment. we are losing this for another graph involving doc
Sr. Air Force officials say the computer company was unable to deliver what it promised, but admit that the Air Force too was to blame and didnt have the level of expertise to manage such a huge, complex project.
