Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"Rain chances on the rise"
After a string of days with temperatures in the lower to middle 80s, it looks like our streak of warm and dry weather has come to an end as a cold front continues to push through Southwest Florida.
Moderate to heavy showers that moved in earlier this morning dropped, in some spots, close to 1" of rain. As we progress through the midday and early afternoon hours moisture will continue to stream in off the Gulf of Mexico. Today doesn't look to be a washout by any means, however we will see on and off downpours washing in across Southwest Florida as moisture pools along that frontal boundary. As a result, afternoon highs will warm only into the middle and upper 70s.
Through Friday, the front will remain in the vicinity of Southwest Florida keeping the clouds and showers in the forecast with afternoon highs in the middle 70s.
Forecast models are hinting at some of the cloud cover lingering around for the first part of our Saturday before a stronger push of cooler and drier air scours out the moisture and delivers more sunshine by the afternoon. Chilly air will continue to filter down the state resulting in some colder nights and significantly cooler afternoons. There will be quite the chill in the air by Sunday morning as overnight lows bottom out in the lower 40s here in town with readings in the middle 30s deeper inland. Despite plenty of sunshine by Sunday, temperatures will struggle to get out of the 60s.
We'll plan on another chilly start for Monday with lows in the 40s, before another warming trend gets under way by the middle part of the work week.

ALTHOUGH THE MARKETS HAVE STALLED OVER THE PAST SEVERAL DAYS, THEY CONTINUE TO HOLD ON TO LAST YEAR'S GAINS.
BUT THEY'RE LOOKING FOR NEW DIRECTION.
SO WHAT SHOULD INVESTORS WATCH FOR IN THE NEXT SEVERAL MONTHS TO A YEAR?
WELLS FARGO ADVISOR - NICK CLEMSKY IS HERE IN OUR STUDIO - WITH THE ANSWER - NICK?
Return to index of stories...
Another question where the crystal ball would be handy…But seriously, obviously the markets will either go up from here or they will retreat a bit and head lower from here. Although our analysts see 2013 as a pretty good year for stocks, that doesn't mean we might not see some volatility along the way.
Return to index of stories...
In the past, we've talked about two different types of risks or scenarios with the markets. The first risk is that the markets could melt down and head lower from here. Although a pullback or even a correction is possible at this point, our analysts believe there is a lower probability of this happening.
The second scenario is that if we see positive developments out of Washington and continue to see improvements in the fundamentals of the economy and in corporate earnings that we could actually see the markets melt up from here and see an extension of this bull market rally.
So in essence, you should always be prepared should the markets pull back by understanding what the downside risk is in your portfolio or how much your investments could depreciate if we saw a correction. But alternatively, don't be caught off guard by having too little exposure to the markets if we see the next leg to this bull market materialize.
And if markets do move appreciably higher from here, there's another type of risk that you better be paying attention to, and that's interest rate risk. And that's because as the economy and the markets improve, there's a pretty good likelihood that interest rates will move higher too. And when that happens, the value of your bonds or fixed income holdings is likely to suffer.
And that's because, generally speaking, when interest rates move higher, bond prices fall since investors can purchase new bond issues with higher coupons. But it's also important to understand hat longer maturity bonds will exhibit greater interest rate risk than shorter term bonds.
To illustrate just how much your fixed income security could drop in value, consider the impact of a 1% increase in interest rates on a 30 year bond yielding 3%. That bond would lose almost 20% of its value when rates go up 1%. It could lose over 30% with a 2% rise in interest rates, and could lose the better part of half its value with a 3% increase in interest rates.
· So for all of you out there that feel safe owning bonds and other fixed income securities, make sure you understand exactly what you own and just how much interest rate risk you are bearing. Because if we see a dramatic rise in interest rates in the next few years, your longer maturity bonds could actually have more downside risk than the stock market.

WHAT IF. THE GUN THAT ADAM LANZA STOLE FROM HIS MOTHER TO KILL 20 CHILDREN AND SIX ADULTS IN NEWTOWN, CONNECTICUT.WHAT IF THAT GUN HAD REFUSED TO WORK ?
A "SMART GUN" THAT COULD ONLY BE FIRED BY ITS AUTHORIZED OWNER?
.THE KIND OF TECHNOLOGY WE SEE IN THE LATEST 007 MOVIE."SKYFALL":
"There's a micro dermal sensor in the grip. It's been coded to your palm print so only you can fire it. Less of a random killing machine and more of a personal statement."
IT TURNS OUT, IT'S NOT JUST IN THE MOVIES:
"If you take it from me within seconds, the light turns red. And if you give it back to me, it's green again."
THE TECHNOLOGY ALREADY EXISTS BOTH IN HANDGUNS.
"POP"
"POP"
AND RIFLES.
"POP"

WITH THE iGUN RIFLE, IT'S ALL ABOUT THE MICRO-CHIP INSIDE THE RING THAT THE GUN OWNER WEARS.
WHEN THAT RING TOUCHES THE HANDGRIP, THE CHIP TRANSMITS A CODE TO A RECEIVER IN THE RIFLE:
"It's looking for a particular code, if it does not find that code it does not unlock."
INVENTOR JONATHAN MOSSBERG CALLS IT'S ANOTHER LAYER OF SAFETY:
"Safety off, without the ring, it does not fire. With the ring, it does fire. "
.DESIGNED FOR PARENTS TO KEEP GUNS AWAY FROM CHILDREN, OR ANYONE WHO FEARS THEIR OWN GUN COULD BE USED AGAINST THEM:
"It may be a homeowner in a certain situation. It may be an air marshall, it may be a teacher who chooses to uh carry a firearm."
WITH THE GERMAN-MADE "ARMATIX" HANDGUN, IT'S A PIN CODE, EMBEDDED IN A WATCH:
"So in my hand, it's not going to shoot - it's red.
But when I give it to him.POP, POP, POP"
BUT THE NRA BELIEVES IT COULD BE A FIRST STEP TO GUN CONTROL.
"This is really all sorta kinda pie-in-the sky and hypothetical."
NRA PRESIDENT DAVID KEENE SAYS SMART GUN TECHNOLOGY COULD DRIVE UP THE COST OF A GUN.
AND HE QUESTIONS WHETHER IT WOULD BE RELIABLE WHEN AN OWNER NEEDED THE GUN FOR SELF-DEFENSE.
"What we really need is not smart guns and this and that or the prohibition of firearms, what we really need is training and education."
BUT GUN POLICY ADVOCATES POINT TO THE 500-THOUSAND GUNS ARE STOLEN EVERY YEAR AND 600 PEOPLE WHO ARE KILLED IN ACCIDENTAL SHOOTINGS.
"Putting technology in guns isn't going to save every gun death from happening, but it has the opportunity to save many lives."
TECHNOLOGY THAT MAY SOON BE READY TO MOVE FROM THE MOVIES.
Bond: "Good luck with that."
.TO MAIN STREET.
