6:02 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-TRX-WX WALL

We're on track to see some dramatic changes this the weekend as a blast of arctic air surges into Southwest Florida later today, setting the stage for some of the coldest temperatures so far this winter season.

We'll get our Saturday going with temperatures in the upper 50s by sunrise, but temps will be fairly slow to rise through the day as a northerly wind essentially keep the air refrigerated.

By midday, most spots will approach 70°, and then we'll hit our high of 72° during the early afternoon. Keep in mind, however, that the thermometer will be a bit deceptive today as the winds come in swiftly from the north at 15-20 mph with gusts all the way up to 30 mph, adding an extra chill to the air especially tonight.

As far as sky conditions are concerned, expect variable cloudiness through the day with periods of sunshine along with periods of cloudiness; the front that will deliver the arctic air will actually arrive this afternoon, and we'll likely see some extra cloud cover as it pushes through.

If you have any outdoor plans this evening or tonight, perhaps the Edison Festival of Light Grand Parade, you'll definitely want to bring a coat as temperatures will be dropping rapidly this evening and through the night. Temperatures by parade time will be around 60°, but it won't take long for temperatures to drop deep into the 50s. What's more, the strong northerly winds will put wind chill values as low as the 40s by this evening and early tonight.

By early Sunday morning, temperatures will be quite chilly and in fact rivaling the coldest temps we've had this season. Most of urban Southwest Florida should dip into the low 40s and upper 30s, but readings deep inland could get several degrees colder, even close to freezing in some of the more rural settings like Arcadia and Palmdale; it's these areas that will need to take some extra measures to protect the more sensitive plans since we could have some frost early Sunday.

Sunday will be a very sunny day, but despite full sunshine, a very chilly one too. High temperatures will struggle to get out of the 50s Sunday afternoon with most spots seeing temperatures peak in the low 60s.

Sunday night into Monday morning will likely be the coldest morning as winds continue to relax and our sky stays mainly clear. We could very well see upper 30s and a little light patchy frost across urban Southwest Florida, and deep inland temperatures will get close to freezing once again.

Monday morning, however, will be the end of this next cold snap as we warm back into the mid 70s by Monday afternoon, and then we're right back in the 80s by Tuesday!

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

IT MAY NOT LOOK LIKE MUCH. A TINY BLIP SPEEDING ACROSS THE SCREEN, BUT ASTEROID 2012 DA 14 PACKS A POWERFUL PUNCH. FORTUNATELY, THE PUNCH MISSED. SCIENTISTS SAY AN ASTEROID WITH A SIMILAR 150-FT DIAMETER COLLIDED WITH EARTH 50-THOUSAND YEARS AGO IN ARIZONA.

This is a rare opportunity to see an asteroid up close…it is very rare…an asteroid of this sized doesn't come near earth but once every 40 years on average.

THIS TIME, THE ASTEROID RACED PAST THE SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE AT 4.8 MILES PER SECOND, MISSING EARTH BY ABOUT 17-THOUSAND MILES. IT CAME CLOSE ENOUGH TO THREATEN SATELLITES ORBITING THE EARTH. BUT FEARS OF A LOSS OF TELECOMMUNICATION AND CELL PHONE SIGNALS APPARENTLY UNFOUNDED.

NASA IS USING RADAR AND OTHER TECHNOLOGY TO STUDY HOW THE ASTEROID BEHAVES, INCLUDING ITS ROTATION RATE, ITS COMPOSITION AND HOW IT'S IMPACTED BY THE EARTH'S GRAVITY.

THE IDEA IS TO LEARN ENOUGH TO PREVENT CATASTROPHE FROM AN ASTEROID DIRECTLY THREATENING THE PLANET SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE.

We're going to get a lot of information about the asteroid. We are also interested in its future motion whether or not it could come back. Whether it threatens the earth.

THE ODDS ARE, EITHER THIS ONE OR ANOTHER WILL BE BACK. AN ASTEROID IMPACTS THE EARTH ONCE ABOUT EVERY 1200 YEARS ON AVERAGE. Return to index of stories...

THE F-A-A EXPECTS NEARLY 10-THOUSAND CIVILIAN DRONES WILL BE IN USED IN THE U-S WITHIN FIVE YEARS -

POSSIBLY USED BY POLICE TO FIGHT CRIME AND BY OIL COMPANIES TO KEEP AN EYE ON PIPELINES.

ATHENA JONES EXPLAINS MORE. Return to index of stories...

FAA DRONE PUSH-PKG

THE SKIES ACROSS AMERICA COULD SOON BE WELCOMING MORE DRONES. THE F-A-A IS SEEKING PROPOSALS FROM CITIES, STATES AND UNIVERSITIES TO CREATE SIX TEST SITES FOR UNMANNED AIRCRAFT SYSTEMS. THE SITES WILL HELP OFFICIALS DEVELOP SAFETY STANDARDS THAT WILL ALLOW THE GOVERNMENT TO FULLY INTEGRATE DRONES INTO THE NATIONAL AIRPSACE BY 2015. THE DRONE INDUSTRY SAYS THEY MAKE GOOD ECONOMIC SENSE.

In the next 3 years after the FAA has figured out integration, we could see 70-thousand jobs created in this new industry.

THE COAST GUARD USES DRONES FOR SURVEILLANCE ON ICE SHEETS IN ALASKA AND LOCAL AUTHORITIES IN NORTH DAKOTA ONCE USED A BORDER PATROL DRONE DURING A DISPUTE OVER CATTLE. DRONE MAKERS PREDICT THEY'LL EVENTUALLY BE USED BY ENERGY COMPANIES TO MONITOR PIPELINES AND BY FARMERS TO MONITOR CROPS.

NEW USES WILL REQUIRE NEW GOVERNMENT RULES TO PROTECT PRIVACY.

We don't want drones to become eyes in the sky constantly spying on us. We need controls so that drones are only used when we believe a crime is happening or we're trying to do something particular like fight a forest fire or find a missing child. If we put those controls in place we'll have a powerful technology that has appropriate controls.

IN SEATTLE EARLIER THIS MONTH, THE MAYOR ENDED A POLICE DEPARTMENT DRONE PROGRAM OVER PRIVACY CONCERNS. AND THE VIRGINIA LEGISLATURE IS AT WORK ON BILLS THAT WOULD TEMPORARILY BAN DRONES THERE. Return to index of stories...

RUSSIA METEOR-OC

PEOPLE IN SOUTHWESTERN RUSSIA ARE STILL A LITTLE SHAKEN UP THIS MORNING --

AFTER A GIANT FIREBALL RACED ACROSS THE MORNING SKY -- AND BROKE APART RIGHT ABOVE A CITY, FILLED WITH MILLIONS OF PEOPLE.

IT CAME OUT OF NOWHERE.

THE BRIGHT STREAK IN THE SKY UP LONG ENOUGH FOR PEOPLE TO CAPTURE IT ON CAMERA AS IT LURCHED TOWARDS EARTH AND EXPLODED.

A DEAFENING BOOM FOLLOWED--AS FRAGMENTS RAINED DOWN OVER RUSSIA'S URALS REGION. THE SONIC BOOM SHATTERED GLASS.

AT LEAST ONE-THOUSAND PEOPLE IN THE BULL'S EYE OF THE FALLING METEOR WERE INJURED.

IT'S A BOMBING, SAYS THIS MAN.

PEOPLE DIDN'T KNOW WHAT TO MAKE OF IT.

METEORITES ARE REPORTED TO HAVE SCATTERED ACROSS THREE REGIONS OF RUSSIA.

AND THERE'S ONE REPORT OF A CHUNK SMASHING A HOLE IN A FROZEN LAKE.

AS FRIGHTENING AS IT WAS, SCIENTISTS SAY IT'S NOT ALL THAT RARE TO HAVE METEORS FALLING OUT OF THE SKY. WHAT'S NOT COMMON IS WHEN THEY HIT LARGELY POPULATED AREAS.

Small bodies like that hit the earth regularly. Every year, there's probably several.Mostly over oceans, if it happened over the Pacific Ocean.somewhere.maybe a ship would have seen it.

DENTON EBEL IS THE CURATOR OF METEORITES AT THE AMERICAN MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY.

HE SAYS THE FACT THIS METEOR STRUCK ON THE SAME DAY AN ASTEROID HAD A CLOSE ENCOUNTER WITH THE EARTH IS NOT RELATED AND ONLY A COSMIC COINCIDENCE.

WHILE THE ASTEROID WAS CLOSELY TRACKED. HE SAYS THE METEOR IN RUSSIA WAS TOO SMALL TO BE DETECTED.

AND IT'S LEFT HIM A BIT UNNERVED.

Yes, we can predict things. We know the laws of gravity. We know the masses of the planets and so forth. We can predict what's going to happen down the road. But the interplay of all these celestial bodies together and the ones we don't know about is such to make it kind of scary in a way. Return to index of stories...

6:42 FIRST ALERT FORECAST ON THE 2'S-WX WALL
