SOT: Skip Dunn, Neighbor "I couldn't believe how those flames were going and how they were it was like nothing I've seen before."

IT WAS AROUND 3:15 THIS MORNING WHEN FLAMES LIT UP THE SKY IN THIS DARK NEIGHBORHOOD ON SANIBEL ISLAND.

SKIP DUNN LIVES JUST ACROSS THE STREET.

HE WOKE UP TO A POLICE OFFICER BANGING ON HIS DOOR.

THAT'S WHEN HE SAW THE MASSIVE FLAMES COMING FROM HIS NEIGHBOR'S HOME.

SOT: Skip "The flames were higher than these trees over there, and a lot of the sparks were blowing in various yards, so we got out the hoses wetted down the yards and made sure nothing caught."

DOZENS OF FIREFIGHTERS FROM SANIBEL, FORT MYERS BEACH AND IONA MCGREGOR, BATTLED THE FLAMES FOR HOURS.

FIGHTING THE FIRE. AND THE TERRAIN.

SOT: Assistant Chief Matthew Scott, Sanibel Fire "It was a pretty tough fire to fight because the darkness, it's hard to walk around the house is right up against vegetation, obviously a fully involved structure fire we can't go in so we fought it from the outside."

FIREFIGHTERS SAY A MAN AND HIS TEENAGE SON WERE ASLEEP.

THEY WOKE UP TO SMOKE DETECTORS AND GOT OUT OF THE HOME SAFELY.

THIS MORNING, THE HOUSE IS A COMPLETE LOSS.

BUT LUCKILY, THE LIVES HERE WERE SPARED.

SOT: Rick Tissoni, Sanibel Fire Marshal "If they didn't have those working fire alarms, this would probably be a body count, rather than a successful operation."

SOT: Skip, "It's nothing that anybody wants to see happen." Return to index of stories...

NBC'S JOHN YANG HAS THE LATEST. Return to index of stories...

WINTER STORM-TRX PKG

Across the Midwest, it's shaping up to be another tough day to get from Point A to Point B. On the roads.

SOT THIS IS A TERRIBLE DAY FOR ME, BUDDY!

. just take a look at what this minivan does to a traffic light in Alton, Illinois.

Getting into the air is no easier, as more flights are canceled and airports struggle to reopen.

SOT WHEN I FIRST WALKED IN, I SAW THE LINE HERE AND I SAID, 'THIS CANNOT BE GOOD.'

At NBC's Kansas City affiliate, staying ON the air is the challenge as staff clears snow out of satellite dishes.

Across the region, snow's falling at a furious pace, challenging shovelers.

SOT JUST KIND OF TRYING TO KEEP THE SIDEWALKS AND EVERYTHING CLEAR.

The storm is leaving behind some impressive snowfall accumulations:

--10-and-a-half inches in Raymore, Missouri

12-and-a-half in Alva, Oklahoma

and almost a foot-and-a-half in Hays, Kansas.

In Missouri, there's a state of emergency. In Kansas, state offices closed for all but essential workers.

In Texas, the problem's ice. South of New Deal, Texas, a seven-car accident shuts down traffic on an Interstate highway.

If you don't have to work or travel, it's a time for fun.

SOT SHE'S BEEN PLAYING ALL OVER THE PLACE AN LOVING IT.

For this young girl, it's a chance to do something nice for Dad.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

We've got another warm, spring-like day on the way across Southwest Florida as temperatures climb back into the 80s under a partly sunny sky.

The only blemish in what's otherwise going to be a nice weather day is some morning fog that may get pretty thick in a few areas. Dense fog advisories are posted through 9 a.m. for our inland counties including Glades, Hendry, and interior Collier, but fog will certainly be possible anywhere across Southwest Florida.

Once we hit the mid-morning hours, the fog that's left will start to fade, and we'll be left with a nice mix of sun and clouds and afternoon temperatures in the 80s. Closer to the coast, the sea breeze will hold temperatures in the upper 70s, but elsewhere temps should peak around the mid 80s.

A southerly wind will lead to increasing humidity through the day and into our weekend, and the breeze will become a bit more active during the afternoon with gusts reaching 15-20 mph.

Unlike last weekend, this weekend will be quite warm. Even our morning temperatures will be on the warmer side of average as lows only cool into the mid to upper 60s. Fog will also continue to be an issue during the early morning, and mariners be advised we'll be watching for a good possibility for sea fog, too, as humidity continues to rise over a chilled Gulf of Mexico.

Daytime highs through the weekend should easily warm into the 80s for all areas except the coast, and our sky will be predominantly sunny with only fair-weather clouds developing through the day. Rain prospects will stay pretty low through the weekend, but there will be a slight chance for a few isolated inland showers Sunday afternoon.

A change in the weather pattern will be in order by early next week as the next front swings into Southwest Florida, so look for increasing rain chances come Monday night into Tuesday. Some rain and clouds may even linger into Wednesday as the front makes its final push to the south, but we should see clearing skies and cooler weather by Thursday.

There's even indications in our long-range forecast models that another big chill will arrive by the end of next week, so this is a possibility we'll be monitoring over the next several days.

Keep checking back with nbc-2.com for the latest weather updates, and remember you can access the only LIVE radar in Southwest Florida by using our Doppler Zoom tool online. You can also have access to our radar on your mobile device. Just search, "NBC 2 Wx" in the app store! Return to index of stories...

MARS. WE SHOULD HAVE BEEN THERE ALREADY. JUST ASK THE HEAD OF THE MARS SOCIETY WHO DECADES AGO WORKED ON CONCEPTS FOR HUMAN MISSIONS.

"If the Apollo program had not been orphaned and abandoned, the first children born on Mars would probably be entering high school right about now."

JUST ASK THE LAST MAN TO WALK ON THE MOON THE FURTHEST AWAY ANY HUMANS BEEN SO FAR.

"We're gonna be on our way to Mars by the turn of the century i said that in 1973 gave me over 27 years to be proven wrong. I won't live to see humans on Mars. I thought i would."

BUT THERE'S A CHANCE, A LONG SHOT, THAT CERNAN WILL SEE HUMANS FLY BY THE RED PLANET. MILLIONAIRE DENNIS TITO, IS LEADING A PRIVATELY FUNDED VENTURE TO MARS CALLED "MISSION FOR AMERICA." THE JAW DROPPING, SEEMINGLY OUTRAGEOUS UNDERTAKING WOULD LIFTOFF IN 2018 JUST FIVE YEARS FROM NOW, WHEN MARS WILL BE IN SPITTING DISTANCE OF EARTH, ABOUT AS CLOSE IT EVER GETS, ROUGHLY 36 MILLION MILES. TITO IS NO STRANGER TO SPACE FLIGHT. HE WAS A NASA ENGINEER AND IN 2001 BECAME THE FIRST SPACE TOURIST FLYING ON A RUSSIAN ROCKET TO THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION.

"It goes beyond anything ever dreamed."

PLANS FOR THE MARS MISSION WILL BE FULLY UNVEILED NEXT WEEK IN WASHINGTON.

WHILE TITO HASN'T SAID IT'S A HUMAN MISSION, THAT SEEMS PRETTY CLEAR. SOME OF THE PRINCIPLE PLAYERS INVOLVED ARE EXPERTS IN SPACE MEDICINE AND LIFE SUPPORT. THE MISSION WOULD BE A "FAST FREE RETURN" AND TAKE 501 DAYS. Return to index of stories...

LAURA CONNELL WITH SOUTHWEST FLORIDA CRIME STOPPERS IS HERE WITH A NEW LIST OF BAD PEOPLE. Return to index of stories...

FUGITIVE FRIDAY-5 SS

Starting off our list this week is a Collier County man who deputies say goes by the street name of "Panama." Joaquin Rafael Paonessa is in a whole lot of trouble these days, with several warrants for violation of state probation for burglary, grand theft, three counts of trafficking in stolen property and three counts of giving false information to a pawn broker. Although he was last known to be living in Naples, Paonessa may be going back and forth between Collier and Lee Counties, possibly working as a cook. Deputies believe he may also be attending an area college. Paonessa is 25 years old and has tattoos of the letters J and P on his arms.

And in Charlotte County, deputies are on the hunt for 32 year old Justin Richardson, wanted for 9 counts of grand theft and the possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. This Sarasota native is well known to law enforcement officers, with a long string of arrests highlighted on his rap sheet over the last decade. Among his criminal misdeeds are several counts of drug possession, resisting officers, smuggling contraband into the jail and numerous times when he led police on high speed chases. Detectives believe Richardson was also involved in a recent Port Charlotte burglary, in which a silver, rusty, but loaded, handgun was stolen. Richardson is 6'1", 210 pounds and is heavily tattooed on both arms. It's believed that he's still in the area, possibly moving around from hotel to hotel in the Port Charlotte area.

Also evading arrest this afternoon is Arturo Robles, wanted on a bench warrant for Failure to Appear in court on charges of attempted second degree murder with a firearm. Investigators say the victim was sitting in a car, parked in a driveway on Hibiscus Avenue in East Naples. Robles approached the vehicle, fired a shot through the window, then fled the area. The victim suffered a gunshot wound to the neck, and was airlifted to the hospital, where he was treated for his injuries. Robles was arrested at work four days later, and spent a few weeks in jail, before posting $100,000 bond. But when his trial date came up on the calendar, Robles was nowhere to be found. Robles is 33 years old, 5'7" and could be working under the table in the construction industry.

And last, but certainly not least, is Christopher Taylor, a violent repeat offender wanted for violating terms of his community control on the heels of an arrest for grand theft. Thus far, this Fort Myers native has been booked into the jail 17 times before, with his first felony at age 16 for grand theft auto. Since then, he's been busted for several counts of battery, grand theft and selling cocaine on multiple occasions, both near a school and a church. Additionally, Taylor has spent time behind bars in Broward County for battery on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. He has strong ties to the Dunbar area, and is likely still in town - possibly in the Sabal Palm area. Taylor has several tattoos, including the phrase Flames Make Money on his right arm, and the letters IDA on his left arm. He may also be using the alias of Jason Lee Nixon. Upon his arrest, Taylor will be held without bond in the Lee County Jail. Return to index of stories...

LIVE / TRACIE POTTS / WASHINGTON, DC

IN INDIANA. THE NATIONAL GUARD'S BRACING FOR A 20 PERCENT PAY CUT:

"A lot of the extras will go the wayside - swim lessons, preschool -- possibly our trip to Pennsylvania to see Grandma this summer."

IN CLEVELAND'S SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE - PHONES ARE RINGING OFF THE HOOK.

"I've never seen over 600 calls waiting in the queue."

PEOPLE ANTICIPATING THE OFFICE MAY CLOSE ONE DAY A WEEK:

FROM SCHOOLS IN TEXAS. TO RESTAURANTS THAT SERVE THE MILITARY:

too quick to chyron!

"They're like family."

AMERICA'S BRACING FOR 85 BILLION IN BUDGET CUTS, ONE WEEK FROM TODAY.

New Jersey:38-:44

"This is an artificial, unnecessary, self-inflicted crisis that should end today."

WEATHER FORECASTERS. BORDER PATROL. AIRPORT SCREENERS -- AND AIR TRAFFIC CONTROLLERS - COULD ALL BE FURLOUGHED.

FOR NOW, THERE'S NOT MUCH ACTION BEHIND THE SCENES.

REPUBLICAN LEADER MITCH MCCONNELL SAYS PRESIDENT OBAMA CALLED HIM THURSDAY -- THE FIRST TIME THIS YEAR.

THE WHITE HOUSE SAYS REPUBLICANS ARE SPENDING MORE TIME CRITICIZING. THAN WORKING ON A SOLUTION:

"Imagine if Republicans put half the amount of effort into finding a solution to this problem as they have into coming up with hashtags."

CONGRESS COMES BACK NEXT WEEK.

BUT DOES THE PUBLIC REALLY UNDERSTAND WHAT'S GOING ON? A NEW POLL FINDS ALMOST HALF OF AMERICANS HAD BARELY HEARD ANYTHING ABOUT THESE CUTS.

WHERE YOU'LL FEEL THE CUTS-PKG

THE FORCED BUDGET CUTS ARE SET TO TAKE EFFECT ON MARCH 1ST, UNLESS CONGRESS DOES SOMETHING ABOUT IT.

HERE'S 4 PLACES YOU COULD FEEL THE PAIN.

FIRST -- HIGHER BEEF AND CHICKEN PRICES.

FOOD SAFETY PROGRAMS ARE IN FOR A $51M CUT.

THAT MEANS FEWER FOOD INSPECTORS ON THE JOB, AND POTENTIAL CLOSINGS OF MEAT AND POULTRY PLANTS.

THE RESULT, A SMALLER SUPPLY, AND HIGHER PRICES.

THE FORCED CUTS INCLUDE $400 MILLION DOLLARS FROM THE HEAD START PROGRAM,

WHICH MEANS 70-THOUSAND PRESCHOOLERS, FROM LOWER INCOME FAMILIES, HAVE TO STAY HOME.

GET READY FOR A BIGGER HEADACHE AT THE AIRPORT.

FORCED TIME OFF FOR AIRPORT SECURITY AND CUSTOMS WORKERS COULD LEAD TO LONGER LINES -- MUCH LONGER.

HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JANET NAPOLITANO TOLD CONGRESS LAST WEEK THAT DOMESTIC TRAVELERS COULD SPEND AN EXTRA HOUR GETTING THROUGH SECURITY IN SOME AIRPORTS.

FINALLY -- ABOUT $3 BILLION DOLLARS COULD BE TAKEN OUT OF A SUPPLEMENTAL BILL FOR AID TO VICTIMS OF HURRICANE SANDY.

ACCORDING TO HUD- SECRETARY SHAUN DONOVAN, THE SEQUESTER COULD WASH AWAY FUNDING FOR 10k HOMES AND SMALL BUSINESSES IN NEED OF REPAIR.

BUT ALL IS NOT LOST, YET.

CONGRESS STILL HAS TIME TO AVERT THE SPENDING CUTS.

AND EVEN IF THE CUTS KICK IN, GOVERNMENT AGENCIES ARE EXPECTED TO TRY HARD TO AVOID MAJOR DISRUPTIONS FOR AT LEAST A COUPLE OF MONTHS.
