WE ARE GETTING WORD ABOUT FALLOUT IF THE AUTOMATIC FEDERAL SPENDING CUTS KICK IN ONE WEEK FROM TODAY.
THREE SOUTHWEST FLORIDA AIRPORT TOWERS ARE LIKELY TO SHUT DOWN,
THIS AFFECTS LEE, COLLIER, AND CHARLOTTE COUNTIES.
LET'S GO STRAIGHT TO NBC2'S GABY FLEISCHMAN WHO IS LIVE AT PAGE FIELD IN FORT MYERS.
GABY.

PAGE FIELD IS ONE OF THREE SWFL AIRPORTS THAT COULD LOSE ITS CONTROL TOWER OPERATIONS. NAPLES MUNICIPAL AIRPORT AND PUNTA GORDA AIRPORT ARE ALSO ON THE LIST.
Return to index of stories...
IF PRESIDENT OBAMA AND CONGRESS DON'T REACH A COMPROMISE-- 100 AIRPORTS COULD CLOSE ACROSS THE COUNTRY-- RIGHT NOW THAT MEANS ANY AIRPORT WITH LESS THAN 150THOUSAND FLIGHTS EACH YEAR.
IT ALL COMES DOWN TO FAA CUTTING JOBS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO OPERATE AS MANY CONTROL TOWERS.
IN A STATEMENT, THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION SAID SAFETY IS THEIR TOP PRIORITY AND THEY WILL ONLY ALLOW THE AMOUNT OF AIR TRAFFIC THEY CAN HANDLE--
WHICH MEANS TRAVELERS SHOULD EXPECT DELAYS.
Return to index of stories...
I SPOKE TO TED SOLIDAY THE EXEC DIRC AT NAPLES MUNICIPAL AIRPORT-- HE SAYS THE CHANGES WOULD HAVE A SIGNIFICANT NEGATIVE IMPACT ON THE AIRPORT AND COMMUNITY. HE TELLS ME IF THE TOWERS SHUT DOWN-- NAPLES MUNICIPAL, PAGE FIELD AND PUNTA GORDA AIRPORTS WOULD HAVE TO USE TOWERS FROM ANOTHER AIRPORT-- POSSIBLY RSW-- WHICH WOULD CLOG UP THEIR OPERATIONS AND CAUSE DELAYS AND HEADACHES FOR TRAVELERS.
Return to index of stories...
I ALSO SPOKE TO A REP FOR LEE PORT AUTHORITY WHO TELLS ME THEY WILL MEET NEXT WEEK TO TALK ABOUT POTENTIAL IMPACTS AND ACTION THEY MAY NEED TO TAKE-- BUT RIGHT NOW IT ALL COMES DOWN TO WHAT OUR GOVERNMENT DOES AND WHAT FAA ULTIMATELY DECIDES TO DO.
IF THE SEQUESTER HAPPENS-- FAA WILL START SHUTTING DOWN TOWERS BY APRIL 1ST.

A STATE TASK FORCE TODAY DETERMINED THE CONTROVERSIAL "STAND YOUR GROUND" LAW IS A GOOD ONE. AND SHOULD NOT BE OVERTURNED.
THERE HAS BEEN A LOT OF DISCUSSION ABOUT THIS EVER SINCE THE SHOOTING DEATH OF TRAYVON MARTIN.
NBC2'S RICK RITTER GOT REACTION FROM PEOPLE WHO FEEL A PERSONAL CONNECTION TO THIS LAW.

THERE'S PEOPLE HERE IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA WHO KNOW EXACTLY WHAT IT'S LIKE TO BE THREATENED AND DEFEND THEMSELVES. ONE OF THOSE INCIDENTS TOOK PLACE HERE AT DEL'S FOOD STORE IN EAST NAPLES LESS THAN TWO YEARS AGO. TODAY, A DECISION ON THE STAND YOUR GROUND LAW HAD THIS STORE OWNER ON EDGE.

Del Ackerman/19:22:24 "My granddaughter is on the phone crying, I had to shoot him I had to shoot."
ACKERMAN'S GRANDDAUGHTER SHOT THE SUSPECT IN THE LEG - WHICH EVENTUALLY KILLED HIM.
THE STATE ATTORNEY'S OFFICE FILED NO CHARGES AGAINST HER.
EVEN THOUGH IT WASN'T DECLARED A "STAND YOUR GROUND" CASE - ACKERMAN SAYS SHE DID THE RIGHT THING - AND WAS THRILLED TO HEAR ABOUT THE STATES DECISION ON FRIDAY.
Del Ackerman/19:25:00 "Can a mother, father, child protect themselves? I'd say yes, no question about it."
THE ANNOUNCEMENT COMES AFTER HOURS OF MEETINGS BY THE CITIZEN SAFETY TASK FORCE.
TODAY WE REACHED OUT TO ONE OF NAPLES PREMIER ATTORNEY'S - ASKING HIM HOW THE LAW PLAYS INTO THE COURTROOM.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
WARM WEEKEND IN STORE
Temperatures have been running several degrees above average, and there is no sign of that stopping over the next four days.
Unlike last weekend, this weekend will be quite warm. Even our morning temperatures will be on the warmer side of average as lows only cool into the mid to upper 60s. Fog will also continue to be an issue during the early morning, and mariners be advised we'll be watching for a good possibility for sea fog, too, as humidity continues to rise over a chilled Gulf of Mexico.
Daytime highs through the weekend should easily warm into the 80s for all areas except the coast, and our sky will be predominantly sunny with only fair-weather clouds developing through the day. Rain prospects will stay pretty low through the weekend, but there will be a slight chance for a few isolated inland showers Sunday afternoon.
A MAJOR change in the weather pattern will be in order by early next week as the next front swings into Southwest Florida, so look for increasing rain chances come Monday night into Tuesday. Some rain and clouds may even linger into Wednesday as the front makes its final push to the south, but we should see clearing skies and cooler weather by Thursday.
I call this a major change because models are hinting that the low pressure that brings us the inclement weather will stay through mid-March. I'm not worried about clouds and rain through the first half of March, but you will feel it when it comes to the temperatures.
So a big cool down looms for Southwest Florida in the near future.
Keep checking back with nbc-2.com for the latest weather updates, and remember you can access the only LIVE radar in Southwest Florida by using our Doppler Zoom tool online. You can also have access to our radar on your mobile device. Just search, "NBC 2 Wx" in the app store!
