TODAY AT THE WHITE HOUSE, PRESIDENT OBAMA ASKED THE NATION'S GOVERNORS TO

Congress should not allow arbitrary sequester cuts to go through and hurt

economy, it can be done without jeopardizing critical services.

These cuts do not have to happen. Congress can turn them off any time with

MORE THAN HALF OF WOMEN IN THEIR SIXTIES TAKE CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D TO BOOST THEIR BONE HEALTH AND PREVENT FRACTURES -- BUT NOW THE U-S PREVENTIVE SERVICES TASK FORCE SAYS THE POPULAR PRACTICE MAY DO NOTHING AT ALL.

"For many average patients additional vitamin D and calcium may not reduce the risk for an osteoporotic fracture in their lifetime."

THE TASK FORCE COULD NOT FIND ENOUGH EVIDENCE TO RECOMMEND FOR OR AGAINST PREMENOPAUSAL WOMEN USING CALCIUM AND VITAMIN D -- OR POST/bMENOPAUSAL WOMEN TAKING HIGH DOSES OF THE SUPPLEMENTS.

THEY DID FIND THAT POSTMENOPAUSAL WOMEN SHOULD NOT TAKE LOW /bDOSES OF THE PILLS -- STUDIES SHOWED NO BENEFIT AND AN INCREASED RISK FOR KIDNEY STONES.

"The exception to that are individuals with known osteoporosis or previous fractures with trauma."

THE COUNCIL FOR RESPONSIBLE NUTRITION -- THE SUPPLEMENT TRADE ASSOCIATION -- RESPONDED TO THE NEW GUIDELINES, SAYING THEY "REPRESENT A LIMITED REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE LEADING TO CONTROVERSIAL CONCLUSIONS."

"A study like this is an analysis of other analysis and therefore the decision is still not cut in stone and as clear as we might like."

DOCTORS AGREE THAT THE BEST SOURCE OF CALCIUM IS FROM YOUR DIET -- MILK, YOGURT AND LEAFY GREENS PACK A HIGH CALCIUM PUNCH. GETTING 15 MINUTES OF SUN A DAY AND EATING FISH A FEW TIMES A WEEK BOOSTS LEVELS OF VITAMIN D.

BUT FOR WOMEN WHOSE DIETS ARE NOT ADEQUATE -- SOME DOCTORS SAY THEY WILL STILL RECOMMEND THE SUPPLEMENTS TO THEIR PATIENTS -- WHILE THEY WAIT FOR MORE CONCLUSIVE RESEARCH.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

FEW SHOWERS TOMORROW

The spring-like warmth we've enjoyed will soon come to an end this week as a cold front slides into Southwest Florida tomorrow afternoon.

We'll start Tuesday off with temperatures near 70. Areas of dense fog will be an issue again as sea fog moves on shore. So visibility will be low at times in the morning. This is happening because we have such a warm and humid air mass riding over the cool Gulf waters in advance of our cold front.

As we start heading into the afternoon hours our front will begin to traverse the area and give us added cloud cover mixed with a few showers. Highs will be just above 80 degrees.

So as you can see Tuesday will be much different than the past few days. In fact, cloudy skies and a few showers may even carry over into Wednesday before the front makes its final push through our area by Thursday.

This sets the stage for the rest of the week…

Once the front clears Southwest Florida temperatures will take a dive. Daytime highs Thursday will comfortably reach the mid 70s, Friday the low 70s, and by Saturday there's a chance we won't make it out of the 60s. Our overnight temperatures will also spend several nights on the cool side with 50s and 40s possible by the weekend.

Often times after a cold front moves in it only takes a couple days before our weather starts warming back up, but this might not be the case this go around. Computer models are suggesting a big shift in the weather pattern through the first 7-10 days of March where temperatures will stay cooler than average, meaning it might not be until mid March before the spring break weather makes it back to Southwest Florida. Well you could feel the sense of anticipation in the Vatican press room this morning hundreds of journalists from all over the world all waiting for this big announcement.

But instead of one big news we got two.

First of all the Vatican spokesman confirmed that the Pope has changed the canon law that sets the rules for the election of the Pope.

The Conclave was meant to start sometime between March 15th and the 20th but now the cardinals will be allowed to change that and start the conclave as early as the first days of March.

"In terms of the beginning of the conclave, it is only determined once the cardinals begin meeting. We cannot expect that meeting to take place before march first."

On top of that the spokesperson said that Pope Benedict XVI the offer of resignation by Cardinal O'Brien after the scandal that engulfed him.

Cardinal O'Brien in a statement said he wouldn't come to Rome, he would not participate in the conclave because he did not want the media attention on him and taken away from the election.

Never before has a cardinal renounced his rights to participate in the election of the pope because of scandals engulfing him.

AND THIS SETS A PRECEDENT THAT OF COURSE SETS ALL EYES ON CARDINAL MAHONEY OF LOS ANGELES WHO SAID HE WOULD COME TO ROME ANYWAY DESPITE THE SCANDAL THAT HAS ENGULFED HIM, AS WELL.

WELL LETS SEE IF O'BRIEN'S DECISION WILL CHANGE HIS MIND. Return to index of stories...
