IT WOULD BE WRONG TO SAY ANTONIO CALZADO IS A SHADOW OF HIS FORMER SELF- WHEN HE FEELS YOUNGER AND BOLDER THAN HE DID TWENTY YEARS AGO.

ANTONIO CALZADO/USES SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR

A CAR WRECK, COMPOUNDED BY DIABETIC NEUROPATHY AND FOOT AND ANKLE ISSUES, LEFT HIM USING A CANE AND IN CONSTANT PAIN.

ANTONIO CALZADO/USES SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Antonio's quality of life took a big step forward when he agreed to go a different direction with his treatment. And have a neuro stimulator implanted in his lower back.

DR. CHRISTOPHER DAWSON/PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION

RUNS:

2:41 In Antonio's case, he presented on three different medications. He had also exhausted numerous injection techniques. He had undergone numerous surgeries on his foot and ankle. So he was determined to be an excellent candidate for spinal cord stimulator.

A SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR DELIVERS ELECTRICAL PULSES TO BLOCK PAIN MESSAGES BEFORE THEY REACH THE BRAIN. EACH PATIENT IS FIRST SCREENED WITH AN AT-HOME TRIAL.

DR. CHRISTOPHER DAWSON/PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION

RUNS:

4:18 I place the electrode into the epidermal space on the back side of the spinal cord or the dorsal columns of the spinal cord. We then try to capture the locations of pain. Once we have done that, we can secure the lead which exits the skin in the low back which is connected to a generator and the patient is discharged to home.

IF PAIN IS REDUCED, A SURGEON IMPLANTS THE STIMULATOR. IT COMES WITH A HANDHELD PROGRAMMER SO PATIENTS CONTROL THE LEVEL OF CURRENT.

DR. CHRISTOPHER DAWSON/PHYSICAL MEDICINE & REHABILITATION

RUNS:

3:25 I tell patients that the pain will most likely not be eliminated but more likely reduced and we would be happy with a 50% reduction in their pain. In Antonio's case, he had a complete 100% reduction

ANTONIO CALZADO/USES SPINAL CORD STIMULATOR

RUNS:

10:27 I'm able to do 45 minutes every morning of exercises. And that contributed to be losing 107 pounds over the year and a half.

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CHILLY START TO A MILD DAY

It is a cold start to the work week. Temperatures are starting in the 30s and 40s across Southwest Florida. Through the day, we'll see a good amount of sunshine, winds from the north around 15 mph and we'll warm near 70 degrees. That is a bit more mild than what we felt through the weekend with the highs the past few days staying in the 60s. Through the week, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds…some days with more sunshine and some days a few more clouds. For tomorrow, we're going to start with temperatures in the 40s and 50s to warm up into the upper 70s. From Wednesday through Friday, highs will be in the low to mid 70s. As you look ahead to the weekend plans, you can expect temperatures to warm into the lower 80s. Overall, this looks like a pretty nice week. Return to index of stories...

BUT GAS PRICES ARE DROPPING. SLIGHTLY.

NEW NUMBERS ACROSS THE COUNTRY SHOW THE AVERAGE PRICE FOR A GALLON OF REGULAR UNLEADED DROPPED A PENNY.

TRIPLE A SAYS THE NEW AVERAGE IS $3.74 A GALLON.

ACROSS FLORIDA DRIVERS ARE PAYING $3.82.

HERE IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA WE'RE PAYING ON AVERAGE $3.86.

THAT'S DOWN FOUR CENTS IN A WEEK.

BUT DRIVERS ADMIT THE HIGH PRICES ARE MAKING THEM CHANGE THEIR HABITS.

"If these prices continue, if this pessimism continues, you'll see some of the bigger things. you'll see more carpooling, you'll see people buying more fuel efficient vehicles"

BUT MOSTLY WHAT GASOLINE RETAILERS HAVE ALREADY SEEN IS A CHANGE IN ATTITUDE.

"They're trying to shop around more for price"

JEFF LENARD'S WITH THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CONVENIENCE STORES. THE SINGLE BIGGEST SELLERS OF GAS IN THE U-S.

.WHOSE SURVEY FOUND PEOPLE WILLING TO DRIVE FIVE MINUTES OUT OF THEIR WAY TO SAVE FIVE CENTS A GALLON.

"There are apps out there, there are all kinds of deals that you see with various channels to take ten cents, twenty cents off a gallon"

AND THE LEAST CONCERN CUSTOMERS HAVE. IS WHAT BRAND OF GAS THEY'RE PUMPING.

"We are finding that loyalty right now for most consumers lasts until the next fill up then they do the search all over again, find who has the best price, that is their new favorite retailer"

ALL OF WHICH SEEMS TO BE WORKING BECAUSE GASOLINE CONSUMPTION CONTINUES TO DECLINE.
