"We have, perhaps inadvertently, but in fact, cured the child."
THE BABY'S MOTHER WAS HIV POSITIVE - AND HAD NOT RECEIVED ANY PRE-NATAL CARE
.
30 HOURS AFTER THE BABY WAS BORN - BEFORE DOCTORS EVEN CONFIRMED THE BABY
WAS HIV POSITIVE AS WELL - THEY DECIDED TO TAKE AN AGGRESSIVE APPROACH TO
ITS TREATMENT.AN INFUSION OF 3 DRUGS.
OVER THE NEXT 18 MONTHS, THE CHILD RESPONDED WELL TO THE TREATMENTBUT THEN
STOPPED COMING.AND STOPPED THE MEDICINES.
WHEN DOCTORS TRACKED mother and child DOWN SEVERAL MONTHS LATER.THEY
DETECTED NO HIV IN THE little one's BLOOD.
SOT - Dr. Gay
"My first thought was to panic. I thought "oh my goodness. I have been
treating a child that's not actually infected."
TO BE SURE, DOCTORS WENT BACK AND DOUBLE CHECKED THE BABY'S LAB WORKAND
CONFIRMED THE CHILD DID INDEED HAVE HIV AT BIRTH.
THE CHILD IS NOW TWO-AND-A-HALF YEARS OLD AND HAS BEEN OFF MEDICATION FOR
ABOUT A YEAR.STILL NO SIGNS OF THE INFECTION.
THERE HAS ONLY ONE OTHER CASE OF SOMEONE BEING CURED OF HIV - A GERMAN MAN
WHO RECEIVED A BONE MARROW TRANSPLANT.
THE MISSISSIPPI CASE COULD BE A MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH IN FUTURE TREATMENT OF
INFANTS.AS WELL AS ADULTS.
SOT - Besser
"If this approach works, the high-dose treatment at the time of birth, it
could revolutionize what's being done. They'll test other babies, try this
approach, see if it works."

A lot of my kids know the keyboard. They can type fairly well into the computer.
BUT ONE OF THOSE WILL NOW BECOME A "K".
THE COMPUTER KEYBOARD WILL HAVE A MAJOR ROLE IN THE CLASSROOM THANKS TO NEW NATIONAL STANDARDS THAT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED IN 2014.
Common core state standards are intended to be rigorous relevant and prepare students for college and careers. They ask for a lot of skills and knowledge and really obtaining those skills and knowledge through technology. So technology is interwoven throughout the standards.
WHAT'S NOT IN THE STANDARDS THOUGH?
CURSIVE WRITING.
IT'S CURRENTLY REQUIRED LEARNING FOR STUDENTS IN THIRD GRADE AND MUST BE MASTERED BY FIFTH.
NATS
TO BE READY FOR THE SWITCH, LEE COUNTY SCHOOLS ARE FAMILIARIZING STUDENTS WITH THE COMPUTER.
I think as they move further and further through their school years and into their adult life, they need to know how to use a computer. I mean almost every type of occupation uses a computer in some way.
UNDER COMMON CORE, ASSIGNMENTS WILL BECOME MORE CHALLENGING AS STUDENTS RISE THROUGH THE GRADES.
THEY'LL HAVE TO USE THE INTERNET FOR REASEARCH AND TEST TAKING -
TYPING RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS RATHER THAN WRITING THEM OUT.
This year for example our 5th graders will be using laptops to take their math FCAT testing so I think we're going to see more and more of that.
AND WHILE THEY'LL SEE MORE AND MORE OF IT.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
BEACH WEATHER IS BACK
After the type of weekend we just had it feels pretty good to say that the beach weather is back!
The sunshine is in full force, the temperatures are warming up, and for the most part that will be the trend for the rest of the week.
Tuesday will be partly sunny with highs getting to near 80. That comes after we start the day off with lows in the upper 40s to lower 50s. As we head into Wednesday a weak cold front will roll down the pipe from our north. It will have minimal impact on our local weather. It'll still be sunny, but during the afternoon hours you'll notice a narrow band of cloud cover that quickly passes over. That is the actual cold front traversing the area. Within that band of cloud cover a brief 5 minute shower could pop up. Other than that the next 7 days will be dry, and even the chance for a shower on Wednesday is less than 10 %.
So don't back on it.
Slightly cooler air filters into the state on Thursday. Lows in the upper 40s, highs in the lower 70s under sunny skies.
Friday will be warmer with lows in the upper 40s, and highs near 80 with mostly sunny skies.
Saturday and Sunday will be picture perfect beach weather. Highs will surpass the 80 degree mark and skies will be mostly sunny.
