FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
After another chilly start to the morning, a warm up is in order this Tuesday with daytime highs rebounding nicely into upper 70s this afternoon under full sunshine.
By midday, most areas should warm into the low to mid 70s, and by the afternoon hours, temperatures will peak in the mid to upper 70s. The exception will be close to the coast where the chilly breezy off the Gulf of Mexico will keep highs there in the low 70s.
Winds will become more southwesterly this afternoon, which will be one of the variables leading to our warm up today. You'll also notice the winds picking up some during the day with breezes reaching 15-20 mph.
Rain will stay out of the forecast today through tonight, but by early Wednesday morning, a few light showers will be possible as the next cool front slides through Southwest Florida.
The timing of the rain will be close to sunrise Wednesday, but the showers should be gone by the mid-morning hours, leaving us with sunny skies for the remainder of the day. Once the front clears the area, temperatures will stay fairly cool through the day as winds become more northerly behind the front; most areas should only reach the low 70s for daytime highs.
By Wednesday night into Thursday morning, we'll have another round of temperatures in the mid 40s across the urban corridor and even some mid to upper 30s deeper inland.
Thursday will be another cool day with highs only reaching the low 70s under full sunshine, and then we'll spend another night in the 40s and 50s as we head into your Friday morning.
Temperatures will be on the rebound again as we approach the upcoming weekend, and by Sunday afternoon, daytime highs will be back in the 80s. The weekend outlook looks phenomenal, too, with comfortable humidity and rain staying out of our forecast.

IF YOU COULD DONATE ONE OF YOUR KIDNEYS, WITH HALF THE DOWNTIME AND A FRACTION OF THE PAIN- WOULD YOU? PEOPLE WAITING FOR A LIFE-CHANGING DONATION HOPE SO.
BARBARA MILLER/DIR. OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
RUNS:
6:06 There are really about 125,000 Americans waiting for an organ transplant, of those 95,000 are waiting for a kidney. 6:30 Unfortunately our number of donors has not risen at the same rate as our waiting list for recipients.
TO MAKE THE PROCESS LESS TRAUMATIC THE RENAL TRANSPLANT TEAM AT GULFCOAST MEDICAL CENTER ARE TAKING A DIFFERENT APPROACH, A LAPAROSCOPIC APPROACH, TO ENCOURAGE LIVE DONORS.
DR. BARRY BLITZ/LAPAROSCOPIC SURGEON
RUNS:
6:36 Removing the kidney laparoscopically does not create a better kidney; it just increases the amount of people that are willing to donate their kidneys.
COMPARE IT TO THE TRADITIONAL DONOR OPERATION:
DR. BARRY BLITZ/LAPAROSCOPIC SURGEON
RUNS:
:55 An incision is made just below the ribs, sometimes the ribs taken out. There's a certain incision that's made and you are able to identify the kidney and remove it with both hands.
A LAPAROSCOPIC KIDNEY REMOVAL USES POKE HOLES TO INSERT A CAMERA AND CUTTING TOOLS THROUGH TUBE-LIKE PORTS IN THE BELLY.
DR. BARRY BLITZ/LAPAROSCOPIC SURGEON
RUNS:
10:24 Your job as a surgeon is to make a large enough space and a large enough incision so you're not stretching the kidney, fracturing it and breaking it as it comes out. What's important is to make sure that you have the kidney completely prepared, that you know all the different vasculature that's present before you go in.
AMY OSHIER/REPORTING
RUNS:
Data shows a kidney removed laparoscopically functions just as well as one taken through the traditional route. While the recipient is left with a new kidney- the donor has barely a lasting impression.
DR. BARRY BLITZ/LAPAROSCOPIC SURGEON
RUNS:
25:58 It's very possible that you can end up having a three inch incision in the bikini line- can't be seen. About a one inch incision in the belly button, that can't be seen. And one or two very small incisions in abdomen would be the only external evidence.
BARBARA MILLER/DIR. OF KIDNEY TRANSPLANT
RUNS:
10:43 Our obligation in working up a potential donor for transplant is to make sure that we are doing them no harm.

PILOT: "Kennedy Tower. just for your information, we just saw a little drone below us."
TOWER: "I'm sorry, what did you say?"
PILOT: "We saw a drone, a drone aircraft."
TOWER: "Use caution, there was a report of a drone on about a five mile funnel at 1500 feet."
WAS IT A DRONE - LIKE THIS - THAT A PILOT SAW WHEN GETTING READY TO LAND AT JFK?
THE TYPE OF CRAFT MATCHES THE DESCRIPTION.
AND IT RAISES CONCERNS ABOUT AN UNKNOWN OBJECT FLYING SO CLOSE TO PLANES LANDING AND TAKING OFF AT ONE OF THE WORLD'S BUSIEST AIRPORTS.
"The thought of a small unidentified flying object near the airport you get very nervous, very nervous, very nervous, a lot of cause for concern."
"Just as a passenger when you hear the reports, what do you think?"
"It's very scary"
THE FAA SAYS - THE PILOT OF AN INTERNATIONAL FLIGHT MAKING ITS FINAL APPROACH SAW WHAT'S BEING DESCRIBED AS A "SMALL, UNMANNED REMOTE-CONTROLLED AIRCRAFT." NEAR THE AIRPORT.
------------------------------------EDIT-----------------------------------------
FOUR OR FIVE MILES SOUTHEAST OF THE AIRPORT - PUTTING IT ROUGHLY NEAR ATLANTIC BEACH.
THE PILOT DID NOT TAKE EVASIVE ACTION AND LANDED SAFELY.
BUT A DRONE - DESPITE ITS SMALL SIZE - COULD POSE A DIRE THREAT:
"But even the smallest drone is of substantial weight and could easily do damage such as ripping off part of a wing, or impacting a cockpit area where the flight crew is at so it's a significant risk."
DRONES ARE GROWING IN POPULARITY WITH GOVERNMENT AGENCIES - AND THE PUBLIC.
THE FAA IS PREPARING A PLAN TO REGULATE THEIR WIDESPREAD COMMERCIAL USE BY 2015.
"All the indications so far is that we're seeing a lot more close call and misses and not a whole lot on the technology of how we're going to avoid these so called near misses."
