BREAKING NEWS.
THE HE VATICAN WILL START THE CONCLAVE TO PICK THE NEW POPE ON TUESDAY OF NEXT WEEK. IT WAS ANNOUNCED THIS MORNING THAT THE CARDINALS WOULD VOTE THIS AFTERNOON ON A DATE TO START THE CONCLAVE.
N-B-C'S ANNE THOMPSON HAS THE DETAILS FROM THE VATICAN.
Return to index of stories...
-- PKG --
When the cardinals get together in this evening's session they will finally vote on a start date for the conclave to select a new pope.
The Vatican says that conclave will likely begin sometime early next week.
"Lets keep in mind the fact that they're going to vote on the conclave today does not necessarily begin, mean that it will begin on Monday right away."
Now conclave means under lock and key, and so the cardinals will be cut off from the rest of the world once they go in to the conclave.
To chose a new pope someone has to get two-thirds of the vote and in this case it means 77 votes.
Today is the fifth day of general meetings of the cardinals to discuss the state of the church.
Those meetings include the 115 cardinal electors who are here and the cardinals over the age of 80 who are not eligible to vote.
At this morning's session they accepted the excuses of two cardinals who will not be present for the vote.
One is an Indonesian cardinal, he is sick and the other is Scotland's Keith O'Brien.
He declined to come to the conclave because of an admission of sexual misconduct.
"The Vatican did not acknowledge the sexual misconduct, they just said he was excused for quote, personal reason. I'm Ann Thompson at the vatican now back to you."

It was North Korea's toughest threat yet, announced on state tv:
NAT SOT
He said: "since the United States is about to ignite a nuclear war, we will be exercising our right to preemptive nuclear attack
And a government video shows a north korean missile blowing up Manhattan.
Pyongyang defied the world with a nuclear test last month - and a missile test in December - but experts say the regime hasn't proved it cant put a nuclear warhead on a missile that could reach the U.S.
And all this may be backfiring.
Today China - North Korea's closest ally - voted with the U.S. for the toughest economic sanctions yet - hitting Kim Jong Un and his generals where it hurts - luxury products like yachts, racing cars, and jewelry:
ONE OF THE IMPORTANT PROVISIONS OF THIS RESOLUTION TODAY WAS TO MAKE CLEAR THAT A WIDE RANGE OF LUXURY GOODS, AND INCLUDING SOME VERY SPECIFIC LUXURY GOODS, AREN'T GOING TO BE ABLE TO BE IMPORTED FOR THE LEADERSHIP OF NORTH KOREA, WHICH IS LIVING LARGE WHILE STARVING ITS PEOPLE.
Kim's love of western products - and sports --was proved again only last week, by his bizarre embrace of Dennis Rodman.
Despite Pyongyang's newest threat - today the U.S. and south korea continued scheduled training exercises in south korea.
While officials say the U.S. is well-defended against missile attacks - South Korea and Japan are increasingly worried about their belligerent neighbor
THIS 28-YEAR-OLD LEADER IS EITHER TRYING TO EMBOLDEN HIMSELF WITH THE MILITARY THAT RUN THE OPERATIONS OF NORTH KOREA OR THE OTHER WAY AROUND. MILITARY'S EXERTING FORCE OVER THE YOUNG 28-YEAR-OLD LEADER AND THE SABER RATTLING IS SERIOUS AND WE SHOULD TAKE IT SERIOUSLY.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
"Warmer weather is on the way"
High pressure is set to control our weather providing us with plenty of sunshine and a cool breeze out of the north. This will keep our temperatures slightly below normal as they peak in the middle 70s under bright and sunny skies. Due to a freshly chilled Gulf of Mexico, beaches and coastal locations will more than likely hold in the lower 70s during the day.
Tonight, clear skies and light winds will allow temperatures to drop off quickly just after sunset, but it won't be quite as cold. Lower 50s will remain in the forecast for Saturday morning with middle 40s east of I-75.
There's more good news about the weekend. After cool mornings in the 50s, afternoon highs will recover into the lower 80s under mostly sunny skies. Through Sunday, winds will take more of an easterly turn pushing just a few fair weather clouds across the peninsula. As a result of a milder airflow, daytime numbers will climb in the lower to middle 80s, as overnight temperatures settle into the lower 60s.
Early next week will remain fairly dry, however by Wednesday we'll be tracking another cold front with the possibility of a few daytime showers

Starting off our list is a man wanted for both murder and attempted murder, after a shooting in Immokalee last month. A warrant was recently issued for the arrest of Gens Cadete, following the February 2nd incident on Delaware Avenue. According to detectives, two men were sitting in a vehicle when they got into an altercation with Cadete. That fight quickly escalated, with 28 year old Cadete firing into the vehicle, killing one and seriously injuring another. Right after the homicide, Cadete went into hiding - and now, he's a wanted man. While he may be laying low in Collier County, there's a chance he could have fled to either Tampa or Jacksonville, where he has ties. Upon his arrest, he will be held without bond.
Next up is a North Fort Myers man who took his frustration about getting his power shut off just a little too far. Gerald Licquia is wanted for violating terms of his community control following an arrest for attempted robbery. Licquia is no stranger to a life of crime, with six arrests under his belt, including several counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. According to reports, Licquia pulled a gun on two power company employees when they were sent to his house to disconnect his electricity due to non-payment. In an act of rage, Licquia pointed the gun at the men, ordering them to hook the power back up, then leave his property. Even after deputies arrived on scene, Licquia continued his rants, saying he knew where the men lived and that he would "get them." Licquia is considered a violent felony offender who should be considered armed and dangerous.
Also at odds with police is Robert Onley, wanted on a bench warrant out of Collier County for grand theft auto. Last known to be living in the Immokalee area, Onley is a repeat offender both here in Southwest Florida, as well as the southeastern states of Virginia and Maryland. His rap sheet includes arrests for contempt of court, possession of a handgun in a vehicle, second degree assault, reckless endangerment and other weapons charges. Deputies think Onley may be coming back and forth to Collier, as he's worked in the past as a truck driver and could be moving around frequently. But all we need is that one tip to pinpoint his location, and give him a new home at the Collier County Jail.
And rounding out our list is a man who's been a frequent flyer in the criminal world, with felony arrests dating back to his teenage years. Kevin Reisler's first serious brush with the law was at age 15, when he was jailed for aggravated assault with the intent to commit a felony. That same year, he racked up subsequent arrests for burglary and grand theft. At age 17, he was arrested for a long list of crimes, including carrying a concealed weapon, multiple burglaries, grand theft, armed robbery and dealing in stolen property. Just days after he was released from the Juvenile Detention Center for one robbery, he was back in familiar surroundings for yet another robbery. Now as an adult, he's been adjudicated as a registered convicted felon, with additional arrests for weapons, battery, burglary, robbery and contempt. 23 year old Reisler is 5'7", 160 pounds and has tattoos covering most of his body. Upon his arrest, he will be held without bond in the Lee County Jail.

TODAY -- THOUSANDS SUPPORTERS FILL THE STREETS IN CARACAS AS THE FUNERAL BEGINS FOR VENEZUELA PRESIDENT HUGO CHAVEZ.
MORE THAN 30 HEADS OF GOVERNMENT, INCLUDING CUBAN PRESIDENT RAUL CASTRO, PLAN TO ATTEND.
VENEZUELA HAS SOME OF THE BIGGEST OIL AND NATURAL GAS RESERVES IN THE WORLD.
AND IT'S ONE OF THE TOP ENERGY SUPPLIERS INTERNATIONALLY.

BILLIONS OF BARRELS OF OIL
ONE OF THE LARGEST PROVEN RESERVES OF CRUDE IN THE WORLD-
VENEZUELA HAS AN ENVIABLE ABUNDANCE OF NATURAL RESOURCES.
BUT EXPERTS SAY THE COUNTRY SQUANDERED THOSE RICHES IN THE CHAVEZ YEARS.
"Venezuela in 2008 was producing 32. Million barrels per day. One of the most recent statistics I have shows venezuela producing 2.5 million. So that shows you a decrease over the last 4-5 years."
FOR HUGO CHAVEZ, VENEZUELA'S OIL WEALTH WAS A SOURCE OF NATIONAL PRIDE. AND A PIGGYBANK
CHAVEZ TOOK PROFITS FROM PDVSA, THE NATIONAL OIL COMPANY, AND FUNNELED THE MONEY TO PROJECTS THAT OFFERED HOMES, HEALTHCARE, CARS AND EVEN FOOD TO HIS BASE, THE POOR
ALL THIS WHILE NEGLECTING THE INVESTMENT NEEDED TO UPGRADE VENEZUELA'S AILING OIL INFRASTRUCTURE.
UNDER CHAVISMO. OIL SPECIALISTS WERE SACKED, REPLACED BY PARTY LOYALISTS. FOREIGN OIL CONTRACTS WERE CHANGED OR CANCELED. MAKING FOREIGN INVESTMENT IN VENEZUELA RISKY BUSINESS
BUT AFTER 14 YEARS, EXPERTS SEE OPPORTUNITY FOR CHANGE.
"Any boost to the outlook for oil production, which i think is consistent with an opposition victory in potential near term elections would be a big boom for this economy and for asset prices."
10:29:13 UNDER VENEZUELAN LAW, ELECTIONS WILL BE CALLED IN 30 DAYS. ENRIQUE CAPRILES, THE LIKELY OPPOSITION CANDIDATE, HAS CAMPAIGNED ALL ALONG ON MODERNIZING THE VENEZUELAN ECONOMY. AND UNLIKE CHAVEZ- HE IS FIRMLY PRO-BUSINESS.
10:29:29 BUT RECENT GUBERNATORIAL ELECTIONS SHOW THERE'S STILL SOLID SUPPORT FOR CHAVISMO. CHAVEZ'S CHOSEN SUCCESSOR NICHOLAS MADURA IS IN A POSITION OF STRENGTH
"Can chavizmo continue without Chavez? Can the charisma that he has embodied be passed onto his successor?"
ONE THING IS CERTAIN: WHOEVER SUCCEEDS CHAVEZ FACES AN UPHILL BATTLE. A CURRENCY CRISIS IS LOOMING AND ANALYSTS EXPECT A DEVALUATION OF THE BOLIVAR
MODERNIZING PDVSA AND INCREASING OIL OUTPUT IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF A LONG ROAD TO REPAIR VENEZUELA'S ECONOMY
