HERE AT VETERANS PARK MAJOR IMPROVEMENTS ARE BEING DONE TO BENEFIT THE COMMUNITY. BUT TONIGHT WE ARE LEARNING IT WAS NEARLY $2 MILLION DOLLARS OF THIS COMMUNITY'S MONEY THAT HELPED FUND TWO PROJECTS IN FORT MYERS.
Return to index of stories...
It's a sight we havent seen lately in Lehigh acres--construction. Veterans park is expanding and there are plans to build a couple of other parks in town. But with just a handful of facilities for the community to use, the towns community planning president wants to know where all that impact fee money went.
Take sound
Edd Weiner
"We had houses going up before one was finished, the next one was started, they were going up all over the place. And all those impact fees, were supposed to stay in Lehigh acres."
But the county realized it had made a mistake. While recently looking over impact fees, it was discovered nearly two million dollars from the Lehigh community park impact fee district was used to fund the construction of soccer fields at JetBlue park and improvements at schandler hall in fort Myers--money that was supposed to stay in Lehigh.
Nats?
the proposed solution is to take the $1.8 million used, plus a 1.5% interest rate from unincorporated lee county taxpayer reserves. It's a plan the president of the Lehigh acres community planning panel isn't happy about.
Take sound
Edd Weiner, president of Lehigh acres community planning panel "We're getting double taxed for what we had nothing to do with so I mean I hope that somebody would use enough imagination and find that interest money from some other source."
And the hope is to find that money, and find it quickly, so construction can continue.
Take sound
Edd
"I certainly hope that Dave Harner and his crew finds a way to spend it on the west side of Lehigh acres. I mean we're seriously lacking in parks."

Cofield, pictured here from our partners with the Naples daily news, was a teacher at Bonita springs middle.
The superintendent says today's action did have ties to Cofields past.
According to state records with the Florida department of education,
Cofield agreed to a settlement agreement after allegations were reported in an administrative complaint that he pushed a student and on another occasion called a student names.
That settlement agreement put him on probation for two years from 2011.
the superintendent says what led up to today were issues in that court order with how he treated students And violations of the code of ethics.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
BREEZY AND DRY TOMORROW
Tuesday had a very gloomy feel to it because of the cloud cover and occasional shower.
It was all instigated by a cold front, and we are forecasting that front to clear the area by Tuesday night. That will open the door for a cool high pressure to build in.
What does that mean for our local weather? It means the next 7 days will be extremely quiet.
The high will help clear the skies Tuesday night, and that will give way to mostly clear skies on Wednesday. Morning lows will be in the mid 50s and daytime highs will recover to the mid 70s.
It'll also be breezy. Winds will be around 20 knots so if you are planning to go boating use caution.
The winds will continue to be brisk through Friday, but those winds will pull in some cooler air. Thursday we will start the day off in the upper 40s and only reach the lower 70s for highs under sunny skies. Friday will be our coolest morning with interior communities waking up to the upper 30s while the rest of us will be in the low to mid 40s. Highs on Friday will begin creeping back up - they'll reach the mid 70s under partly sunny skies.
The weekend looks great. We will see a medley of sun and clouds with the 80s returning.

A FIRST TIME VISITOR FROM DEEP SPACE. MADE UP OF ROCKS. ICE AND MINERALS.
"It's called comet Pan-Starrs."
I TOOK OUR COSMIC GOOD QUESTION TO CAROL STEWART - PLANETARIUM ASTRONOMER FOR THE CALUSA NATURE CENTER.
Conditions have to be right. No clouds. no haze. nothing.
STEWART SAYS THE COMET WILL ONLY BE VISIBLE FOR ABOUT AN HOUR AFTER THE SUN GOES DOWN. THAT MEANS BETWEEN EIGHT AND 8:30 TONIGHT SHOULD BE THE BEST TIME FRAME.
Here is how you can see the comet. After the sun goes down, find the crescent moon. Then look directly to the left and slightly up.
The comet's path moves higher and to the right of the moon as the week goes on.
okay you can use fist as a guide, put the bottom of the fist right on the bottom of the horizon line. You should see the moon and the comet slightly above the fist."
EVEN WITH A CLEAR VIEW OF THE HORIZON. STEWART ADMITS IT MIGHT BE HARD TO SEE WITH THE NAKED EYE.
"Get your binoculars out and start scanning in that area. Nice little sweeps back and forth and up and down."
