FORECAST OPEN
Return to index of stories...
THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.
IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.
CHILLY START TO A BEAUTIFUL DAY
High pressure is in control of the weather in Southwest Florida. That means we'll see clear skies. These clear skies allowed for a chill to start the day with temperatures in the 40s and 50s this morning. Through the day we'll see lots of sunshine, but we'll only be able to warm into the lower 70s. Winds around the area of high pressure that was mentioned will be coming in from the NNE at 15-20 mph with gusts near 25 mph. This makes for a breezy day and sends in cool, dry air. The dry, breezy conditions keep fire danger a little on the high side. By this evening, the breezes will be weakening. With lighter winds and skies still mainly clear, temperatures will drop to the low to mid 40s across Southwest Florida tonight. For tomorrow, expect the sunshine to continue and temperatures to warm into the mid 70s. As far as weekend weather, it looks pretty good. Highs will be near 80 degrees both days with mostly sunny skies and lows will be milder, in the mid 50s. There are no good rain chances in the next 7 days.

Return to index of stories...
The short answer is, it's likely we'll see the markets end on a higher note this year based on historical market statistics. And even though past performance is no guarantee of future results, there is some pretty convincing evidence to suggest we'll end 2013 in positive territory.
· In fact, the last twelve times the markets were up 8% or more in the first quarter, the markets ended the year with positive gains. And 10 of those 12 times, the markets ended the year up with double digits returns. So being that the S&P 500 is already up over 9% year to date, I think from a historical point of view, the prospects for the markets look good for 2013.
· But the fundamentals of the US economy are beginning to look much better too which is helping to drive markets higher which are generally forward-looking six to eight months out into the future. In fact most metrics are trending positively including housing, employment, manufacturing, and consumer spending. So I think there's a real sense that the recovery is beginning to gain traction and this is being reflected in the markets.
· And of course, it doesn't hurt that our Federal Reserve is continuing to maintain a zero-interest rate environment which drives investors from asset classes with lower returns like cash and short term bonds to asset classes with higher returns like real estate and the equities which has helped to further push stock markets higher.
· Now, with the broad markets up 25% since the beginning of 2012, you should consider taking two different actions to help preserve the impressive gains you've seen in your investment accounts in the past 15 months.
· The first of these is, review your asset allocation and rebalance your investment portfolio to your strategic asset allocation based on your investment objective, your risk tolerance, and your time horizon.
· To illustrate, if at the beginning of 2012 you had a balanced portfolio that was worth $200K, half invested in bonds and half invested in stocks, that portfolio is now likely made up of 40% bonds and 60% stocks due to stock market returns in the past 15 months.
· With a heaver tilt toward stocks now, you may be taking on more risk than you are aware of. We recommend reviewing your portfolio and rebalancing back to the asset allocation of your investment plan of 50% bonds and 50% stocks.
· The second action investors can take is to consider taking some chips off the table and booking some profits in the month of April. There's some pretty convincing historical data that shows that, generally speaking, the best six months to be in the market are from November to April and the worst six months are May through October, hence the old saying, Sell in May and go away
· But as always, it's important to review your investment portfolio frequently, make sure your assets allocation is in check, and always know your downside risk.
o Fundamentals of US Economy trending positively
o Low rates driving investors into riskier asset classes
o Review your asset allocation
o Consider rebalancing your portfolio
o Take some chips off the table - book profits in April

NBC'S PETER ALEXANDER REPORTS.
Return to index of stories...
"There are 47 percent of the people who will vote for the president no matter what. All right, there are 47 percent who are with him, who are dependent upon government, who believe that they are victims."
The man behind that secret Romney recording is Scott Prouty -- a bartender at that private Florida fundraiser last May.
"I was behind this -- this whole thing."
Speaking publicly for the first time Wednesday.
. Prouty -- who says he's a registered independent -- told MSNBC's Ed Schultz he arrived at the dinner that night with an open mind.
"I was interested to hear what he had to say. / I didn't, um, go there with a grudge, you know, against Romney."
Prouty insisted he brought his camera initially thinking Romney might pose for pictures.
I had a Secret Service agent behind me and, you know, it -- number one, we were never told that this was a secret meeting or a private meeting or don't bring cameras. There was plenty of people in the room with cameras. / You know, there was a reception area and people were taking video. There was a -- a videographer there with a camera on a tripod. And there was a microphone and a sound man. And there was 70 people in the room. And it was never said to us, don't bring cameras. But, you know, at this point, I -- I realized that this was not your typical speech."
For two weeks Prouty says he struggled over whether to go public with the tape, before he says he finally decided he had no choice.
"I felt an obligation for all the people that can't afford to be there. You shouldn't have to be able to afford $50,000 to hear what the candidate actually thinks."
Earlier this month, Romney reiterated his commitment to all Americans, but conceded the 47% comments did "real damage" to his campaign.
"It was a very unfortunate statement that I made. It's not what I meant. I didn't express myself as I wished I would have. You know, when you speak in private, you don't spend as much time thinking about how something could be twisted and distorted and -- and it could come out wrong and be used, but you know I did and it was very harmful."
Only after hearing that interview did Prouty -- who says he voted for Obama -- decide to come forward and reveal his role in a dramatic twist to a historic campaign.
"I had no idea it was going to be this big thing that it turned out to be."

IT'S BEEN JUST A MONTH SINCE A FIRE ABOARD THE CRUISE SHIP "TRIUMPH" STRANDED PASSENGERS FOR DAYS, NOW CARNIVAL MAY HAVE ANOTHER P-R NIGHTMARE ON ITS HANDS.
THE "CARNIVAL DREAM" EXPERIENCED GENERATOR PROBLEMS WHILE DOCKED AT ST. MAARTEN IN THE EASTERN CARIBBEAN.
PASSENGERS SAY THE POWER WAS TURNED OFF AS CREWS TRIED TO FIX IT.
"It was down for probably about three hours, during that time the toilets started overflowing down in the main general lobby areas where people where frequenting in the bathroom."
CARNIVAL SAYS A MALFUNCTION OCCURRED DURING REGULAR TESTING OF THE SHIP'S EMERGENCY DIESEL GENERATOR, AND ONLY ONE PUBLIC RESTROOM WAS TAKEN OFFLINE
"When they restarted the system, they noticed there were errors. Thought it was an easy fix. As it progressed into the night, they realized it was a bit more complicated and a few minutes ago they determined that it was not something they can get fixed."
KRIS ANDERSON, A VACATIONING NEWS ANCHOR FROM MEMPHIS, SAYS FRIENDS GAVE HIM A HARD TIME FOR TAKING A CARNIVAL CRUISE SO SOON AFTER THE TRIUMPH DISASTER.
BUT HE SAYS THIS DOES NOT COMPARE TO THE TRIUMPH DEBACLE.

MOST OF US ARE GUILTY OF IT WHETHER WE ADMIT TO IT.
NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS OF US USE A CELL PHONE WHILE DRIVING.
THAT'S MORE THAN TRIPLE THE RATE OF DRIVERS IN EUROPE.
ERIKA EDWARDS SHOWS US WHY WE CAN'T SEEM TO FOCUS ON THE ROAD.

MOM CAN'T ALWAYS BE IN THE BACKSEAT -- REMINDING TEENAGERS TO KEEP THEIR EYES ON THE ROAD. AND THEIR HANDS OFF THE CELL PHONE.
IT TURNS OUT -- ADULT DRIVERS ARE ALSO EASILY DISTRACTED. A NEW REPORT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL SHOWS 1 IN 3 DRIVERS TEXTS WHILE DRIVING. AND A MAJORITY TALK ON THEIR CELL PHONES.
"Not only is the problem severe, it's not going away and in fact if anything, it's becoming a little bit worse over time."
MEANWHILE -- IT APPEARS THOSE WHO DRIVE ON THE LEFT. ARE DOING MORE OF THE RIGHT THING.
THE C-D-C REPORT FOUND JUST 21-PERCENT OF DRIVERS IN THE U-K TALK ON THEIR CELL PHONES WHILE ON THE ROAD. COMPARED TO 69-PERCENT OF U-S DRIVERS. TEXTING WHILE DRIVING IS ALSO SIGNIFICANTLY LOWER IN EUROPE.
IT'S UNCLEAR WHETHER THE REASONS FOR THE DIFFERENCES LIE IN POLICIES OR CULTURE OR BOTH.
CAR MAKERS WORLDWIDE NOW OFFER HANDS-FREE TELEPHONE SYSTEMS LIKE BLUETOOTH.
"Others systems go a little further enabling the driver to block incoming calls or provide automated responses to incoming calls and incoming texts."
BUT EVEN WHEN HANDS AND EYES ARE TECHNICALLY WHERE THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE -- THE MIND CAN EASILY DRIFT ELSEWHERE WHEN DRIVING WHILE TALKING ON A CELL PHONE.
"We all kid ourselves into thinking we're incredibly good multitaskers, and the data essentially suggest that multitasking is not as effective as people think that it is."
EXPERTS SAY THE MOST EFFECTIVE WAY TO STAY SAFE WHILE DRIVING -- IS TO DECLARE THE CAR A "NO PHONE ZONE."
