METEROLOGIST JASON DUNNING IS TRACKING SOME HEAVY RAIN. PINPOINTING WHERE ITS HITTING RIGHT NOW.
Return to index of stories...
Widespread rain and even a few storms will keep feeding in from the Gulf this afternoon and evening, making for a wet and cloudy conclusion to our Monday.
As the rain continues to build to the southeast, the showers should slowly weaken but should hold together long enough to bring wet conditions to most of Southwest Florida.
By the late afternoon and evening, the bulk of the rain will likely be concentrated over the southern half of the viewing, particularly affecting Collier County from Naples down to Everglades City.
Look for showers to linger through tonight before most of the rain dissipates by Tuesday morning.
Tuesday will offer up another mostly to partly cloudy day along with another opportunity for some isolated showers, but the rain shouldn't be as widespread as today.
Despite the extra clouds around tomorrow, temperatures should easily climb into the low to mid 80s.
Wednesday will be yet another interesting day around our part of Florida as a cool front drops in from the north and stalls over Central and South Florida. The front should bring in enough moisture to produce some scattered afternoon rain along with an increase in cloud cover.
Rain chances will start dropping off by Thursday as more sunshine breaks through, sending afternoon temperatures into the mid 80s.
The next incoming weather system will likely arrive late this weekend in the form of a cold front, so it's possible we'll have more rain around Sunday followed by another cool spell by early next week.

THE CLOSER YOU LIVE TO A BUSY ROAD OR FREEWAY, THE MORE LIKELY THE CHANCE OF HAVING A CHILD WITH AUTISM.
THESE FINDINGS ARE PART OF NEW RESEARCH FROM THE DEPARTMENT OF EPIDEMIOLOGY AT THE FIELDING SCHOOL OF PUBLIC HEALTH AT UCLA.
"what we found was an 8-10 percent increase in autism due to traffic related pollution"
WE REACHED LEAD RESEARCHER, DR. BEATE RITZ IN GERMANY. SHE TELLS US THE STUDY LOOKED ONLY AT AVAILABLE DATA AND NO INTERVIEWS WERE CONDUCTED, THEY TRACKED RESULTS FROM AIR MONITORS AROUND LOS ANGELES COUNTY, TWICE A YEAR, OVER THE LAST THREE YEARS.
THE DARKER REGIONS OF THIS MAP SHOW THE AREAS OF WORSE TRAFFIC RELATED POLLUTION. THIS INFORMATION WAS LINKED TO ADDRESSES FROM BIRTH CERTIFICATES AND THEN RECORDS FROM THE CA DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES WHICH GIVES ASSISTANCE TO FAMILIES WITH AUTISM.
"you can have a woman who lives close to a freeway in long beach with high exposure you can have a woman who lives downtown you can have a woman who lives in Pasadena."
"I often tell people autism is a result of us poisoning our planet"
NANCY ALSPAUGH-JACKSON IS THE MOTHER OF 11- YEAR OLD WYATT WHO HAS AUTISM. SHE RUNS ACT TODAY WHICH PROVIDES COSTLY BUT NEEDED SERVICES FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN AND THEIR FAMILIES. RESEARCH SHOWS 1 IN 88 CHILDREN ARE DIAGNOSED WITH SOME FORM OF AUTISM.
"I can't tell you what we've been through over the last seven years And if this information helps other moms out there oh I pray that that's so."
WHILE THE STUDY DID NOT DESIGNATE SPECIFIC REGIONS WHERE THE LINK OF POLLUTION AND AUTISM WAS MOST PREVALENT, IT DISCOVERED WOMEN WITH LESS EDUCATION AND LITTLE AVAILABLE HEALTH RESOURCES LIVED IN THE HIGH TRAFFIC POLLUTION COMMUNITIES.

WHEN IN DOUBT -- PULL THEM OUT.
THAT'S THE CRUX OF NEW GUIDELINES FROM THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF NEUROLOGY ON TREATING ATHLETES WHO'VE TAKEN A BIG BLOW TO THE HEAD.
"You have one brain. That's it. That's all you're gonna get."
THE GUIDELINES RECOMMEND COACHES TAKE PLAYERS OUT OF THE GAME AS SOON AS THEY THINK THEY MAY HAVE SUFFERED A CONCUSSION. AND -- THEY SHOULDN'T BE ALLOWED TO PLAY AGAIN UNTIL THEY'VE BEEN CHECKED OUT BY A HEALTH PROFESSIONAL WELL VERSED IN CONCUSSION TREATMENT.
NEUROLOGISTS SAY THE BRAIN CAN RECOVER MORE QUICKLY IF THE ATHLETE RESTS IMMEDIATELY - AND IS GIVEN TIME TO HEAL.
"The kids that continue to increase their heart rate and get headaches during the course of the game - Those are the brains that don't get better faster."
CHILDREN AND HIGH SCHOOL-AGED PLAYERS SHOULD BE TREATED MORE CONSERVATIVELY. THE ACADEMY FOUND EVIDENCE THAT YOUNGER BRAINS TAKE LONGER TO RECOVER THAN COLLEGE ATHLETES'.
"There's a very small percentage of these children that are going to the Major Leagues or the NFL or the NBA. Be protective of their future which is primarily going to be their brain function, right?"
EXPERTS SAY THAT PROTECTION LIKELY WILL NOT COME FROM A HELMET -- WHICH IS DESIGNED TO PREVENT SKULL FRACTURES -- NOT CONCUSSIONS.
