STATE-OF-THE-ART OPERATING ROOMS ARE TURNING MAJOR SURGERIES INTO LESS INVASIVE ONES.

MODERN MEDICINE.IS TAKING BIG SURGERIES AND MAKING THEM SMALLER. ACCOMPLISHING THE SAME GOALS WITH FEWER COMPLICATIONS AND QUICKER RECOVERIES. THAT OFTEN REQUIRES CUTTING EDGE SURGERY SUITES.

DR. STEVEN PRIEST/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:50: Lee Memorial hospital has opened up a hybrid lab about a year ago.

THIS ONE IS DEVOTED TO A LESS-INVASIVE HEART VALVE REPLACEMENT SURGERY. THE MULTI-MILLION DOLLAR HYBRID OPERATING ROOM IS A MUST FOR THE TAVR PROCEDURE WHICH REPLACES THE AORTIC VALVE WITHOUT OPENING THE CHEST. DR. STEVEN PRIEST IS PART OF THE EXCLUSIVE SURGERY TEAM.

DR. STEVEN PRIEST/CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:50: This equipment can take a Cat scan right as we're doing the procedure. We just have to step back and it gives us a map of how to place the valve. If an emergency surgery were required, we would have all the equipment available to be able to open the heart and place the patient on bypass.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Another high tech surgery solution earned a room of its own. The daVinci robot works out of a designated suite, designed to house its control console and specialized surgical system.

DEMO DAVINCI

RUNS:

:53 The da vinci robots have four arms, the center arm holds the camera then there's two left arms and one right arm. So you can clutch between the two left arms, and for other cases you can actually move this to the other side.

THE daVINCI ROBOT REMAINS DOCKED DURING SURGERY AND WORKS BEST FOR PROCEDURES THAT REQUIRE A FIXED POSITION. INCLUDING PROSTATE, KIDNEY, GALLBLADDER, HEART AND GYNECOLOGICAL OPERATIONS.

DR. KEVIN FLEISHMAN/OBGYN

RUNS:

3:35 The da vinci robot gives you seven range of motion so you have a lot more dexterity, it's a lot easier to avoid structures that you don't want to injure. And it allows you to completely remove lesions that you'd like to remove.

FORGET 'MORE IS BETTER', BUT WHEN IT COMES TO SURGERY, 'LESS IS MORE.' EVEN IF IT MEANS BUILDING A BETTER OPERATING ROOM. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Some patchy rain and even a couple thunderstorms will push into the area this evening and tonight as a cold front slides southward through Southwest Florida.

The rain will come at us from the Gulf of Mexico but will be weakening as it edges our way.

As we go through the night, the rain will keep pushing south and should clear the area by midnight. Our sky will gradually clear late tonight into early Thursday, and temperatures will become a little cooler with lows getting down to the mid 50s.

Thursday will be a gorgeous spring day with lots of sunshine along with lower humidity and cooler temperatures. After starting out in the mid 50s, we'll spend the afternoon with highs only reaching the low to mid 70s. We'll also have a nice northerly breeze from 10-15 with some higher gusts up to 20 mph.

Temperatures will be on the cool side again to start our Friday with lows around the low to mid 50s, but a quick temperatures turnaround is expected Friday afternoon as daytime highs rebound to the low 80s.

The warmth and humidity will keep building in early this weekend with highs reaching the mid 80s along with a mix of sun and clouds.

The next incoming weather system will likely arrive late Sunday into Monday, bringing back some decent rain chances along with more cloud cover. Return to index of stories...

THE RUSSIANS SAW A FLASH OF FLIGHT - AND HEARD THE SONIC BOOM.

nats

THE METEOR EXPLODED WITH THE FORCE OF A NUCLEAR BOMB. IT DID $30 MILLION IN DAMAGE AND INJURED A THOUSAND PEOPLE.

nats screaming

AND NO ONE SAW IT COMING.

"We were fortunate that the events of last month were simply an interesting coincidence, rather than a catastrophe."

THE NATION'S TOP SCIENCE OFFICIALS WERE CALLED BEFORE CONGRESS TUESDAY, TO EXPLAIN WHAT THEY'RE DOING TO DETECT SIMILAR THREATS FROM SPACE.

"And objects as large as a car arrive about once per week."

THE BIGGER CONCERN IS WELL, THE BIGGER ONES.

USING A FOOTBALL FIELD FOR PERSPECTIVE, THE SIZE OF THAT METEOR OVER RUSSIA WOULD ONLY TAKE YOU TO THE 7-YARD LINE. CONGRESS HAS ORDERED NASA TO TRACK OBJECTS THAT ARE SIGNIFICANTLY BIGGER THAN THE ENTIRE FIELD - BIG ENOUGH TO WIPE OUT A CITY.

nats

IN THE FILM DEEP IMPACT, ASTRONAUTS SET OFF A NUKE TO DEFLECT AN ASTEROID.

AND THE U-S NAVY SUCCESSFULLY SHOT DOWN AN OLD SPY SATELLITE IN 2008, BEFORE IT COULD CRASH TO EARTH AND RELEASE TOXIC GAS. BUT BLASTING A LARGE ASTEROID IS NOT IN THE CARDS.

"It would not be practical to have a laser powerful enough to split it in half."

nats

CONJURING UP IMAGES OF THE FILM "ARMAGEDDON", NASA IS PUSHING AHEAD WITH PLANS TO LAND ASTRONAUTS ON AN ASTEROID BY 2025, AND IMPROVE EARLY DETECTION.

"Most important single thing we could do to improve our capacity to see any asteroid of potentially damaging size coming would be an orbiting infrared telescope."

standup --

"You see asteroids like the one over Russia can't be seen from the ground, because they get lost in the sun's glare. Science officials say they need to put a special telescope into orbit. It's being developed right now, but the cost - up to 3-quarters of a billion dollars. Chris Lawrence, CNN, the Pentagon." Return to index of stories...
