CASH-STRAPPED CAPE CORAL IS STARING DOWN AN INFRASTRUCTURE CRISIS.

VISITOR ALAN WRIGHT BIKES OVER CAPE CORAL BRIDGES -- FOR A WEEK EVERY YEAR.
HE'S WONDERED WHAT IT COSTS TO KEEP ALL OF THAT CONCRETE INTACT.
0153 "it's kinda of a hot top back home. The up keeping of the bridge and maintenance. Must be very expensive."
"with 158 bridges in the city of Cape Coral, the cost to replace them today would be anywhere between 300 and 500 million dollars. So far, the city hasn't set any money aside for that future cost."
4830 "eventually, these bridges have to be replaced. No questions about it."
MAYOR JOHN SULLIVAN URGED THE CITY TODAY -- TO TAKE ACTION AND PUT CASH IN THE BANK -- SO FUTURE COUNCILMEMBERS AREN'T SLAPPED WITH A MONSTROUS BILL.
47:49 "these bridges are supposed to last between 50-75 years. The 1st bridges were put in 1961 so we're over the 50 year mark."
PUBLIC WORKS EXPERTS STRESS TO US -- ALMOST ALL OF THE CITY'S BRIDGES ARE OKAY.
STILL THERE'S EVERYDAY WEAR AND TEAR… AND THAT MEANS MORE REHAB… MORE REPLACING… AND MORE MONEY…TO KEEP THESE BRIDGES STANDING.
5953 "it's beautiful compared to back home."
