FIRST WEATHER-WXCTR

Today's Weather Story

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A warm front will slowly drift northward across the region today, leaving much of Southwest Florida with lingering cloud coverage and patchy dense fog through the morning. Much like the last two days, spotty showers will dot the region, though will be light and passing in nature. Afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 70s and low-to-mid 80s, with clouds diminishing into the evening hours. Temperatures will stay well above average through the weekend before a cold front dives in early Monday, producing spotty showers and ushering in a much cooler air mass by the middle of next week. NEW LAWS-BAMVO

THE NEW YEAR BRINGS FATTER PAYCHECKS TO 3-MILLION WORKERS THROUGHOUT THE COUNTRY.

ALSO, MEASURES ON PREGNANT EMPLOYEES' RIGHTS - AND - A LOOK AT LEGISLATION GOVERNING THE USE OF DRONES.

THESE ARE JUST SOME OF THE MANY ISSUES COVERED AS NEW LAWS ARE NOW IN EFFECT.

PETE WILLIAMS HAS OUR REPORT. Return to index of stories...

NEW LAWS-PKG

Starting today in California and Connecticut, any qualified state resident can get a driver's license -- even immigrants here illegally.

State officials say one-and-a-half million people could be eligible to apply.

"I have my passport, Colombian passport."

Many have been applying ahead of time, and advocates say it makes sense, because drivers should know state laws:

"People are driving with licenses for their countries or other states with different rules, and they are not properly trained in California driving safety."

One catch -- the new licenses will be marked to show that they cannot be used as a federally approved I-D to board an airplane.

Under a new law in Illinois, employers must provide accommodations to their pregnant workers, such as more frequent rest and bathroom breaks, help with lifting, and modified work schedules.

We shouldn't be putting women in the position of choosing between their work and a healthy pregnancy, most of these accommodations are no cost or low cost to employers.:11

More states are limiting the use of drones with cameras attached.

North Carolina is the latest state to ban them for use by hunters or by animal rights activists to spy on hunters. Similar laws are now in effect in Alaska, Colorado, Montana, and New Mexico.

And California now bans using them to capture images that could only be seen, without a drone, by trespassing.

Starting today in New Hampshire, hikers, skiers, and hunters can buy.

. a 25 dollar "hike safe" card. And then.

. if they're injured or get lost and have to be rescued, they won't have to reimburse the state for its expenses -- which can run up to 50-thousand dollars.

And people on Social Security will see a slight boost in their checks in the new year -- a one-point-seven percent cost of living adjustment.

That means the average retiree gets about 22 dollars more a month. Pete Williams, NBC News, Washington. Return to index of stories...

Much like the last two days, spotty showers will dot the region, though will be light and passing in nature. RESOLUTION SUCCESS-ONCAM

2015 IS HERE - HAVE YOU MADE YOUR NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS YET?

MANY OF US HAVE. BUT WILL WE KEEP THEM?

HERE'S TRACIE POTTS. IN WASHINGTON THIS MORNING WITH MORE ON WHAT WE'RE HOPING TO GET DONE THIS YEAR. Return to index of stories...

RESOLUTION SUCCESS-PKG

HERE COMES 2015. AND THOSE NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!

"I'm gonna run a thousand miles this year."

"Stop doing THIS. I've got a couple of days left. I'm going to enjoy it while it lasts, then I'm done."

"Save more - just because I just graduated, so I need to hunker down a bit."

"Wake up and do a good job in school."

A RECENT MARIST POLL FOUND FOUR OUT OF TEN OF US WILL MAKE RESOLUTIONS THIS YEAR.

"I'll recycle more and make my bed every morning - hopefully."

BUT LAST YEAR. FOUR IN TEN DIDN'T KEEP THOSE PROMISES.

"So often we fall in the trap of we want to change major things, and we have the expectation that it's going to change very quickly and it just doesn't happen that way and then we set ourselves up and so often we give up because well it didn't happen."

WEIGHT LOSS IS THE TOP GOAL THIS YEAR, ACCORDING TO THAT MARIST POLL. AND FOR GOOD REASON:

"The good news in America: we are living longer. The bad news: we are living longer, sicker."

IN FACT, MORE THAN A THIRD OF OUR RESOLUTIONS ARE ABOUT BEING HEALTHY: EATING BETTER. GOING TO THE GYM.

BUT IT'S TOUGH:

"Working so late sometimes, by the time you get home you just go to bed, sleep."

THE EXPERTS SAY TAKE SMALL STEPS. AND WRITE IT DOWN. YOU'RE MUCH MORE LIKELY TO KEEP IT.
