FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXCTR-CHROMA

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Some cooler weather is in the works across Southwest Florida soon, and this will be the coolest weather we've seen since the second week of December.

For the warm weather fans, soak up the sun and warmth today because the temperature drop begins tomorrow.

It'll be a mild and sunny afternoon with highs on track to reach the upper 70s to lower 80s.

A few spotty showers may develop late this afternoon, but these will mainly stay far south over Collier and Hendry County.

Tonight's weather will be a little on the cool side again with lows in the middle to upper 50s by Wednesday morning.

The chilliest weather of the week will arrive late Wednesday with a fairly strong cold front. The mother load of the chilly air won't arrive until Wednesday night, making for quite the chilly start to our Thursday morning with lows in the middle to upper 40s.

Even though this will be a fairly strong cold front in terms of seeing a big temperature swing, don't expect to see any rain as it moves through Southwest Florida; the atmosphere will just be too dry to produce much rain.

Thursday will end up being a very breezy and chilly day with winds gusts getting as high as 25-30 mph and daytime highs only reaching the middle to upper 60s.

Beyond Thursday, the chilly weather begins to fade away.

By Friday afternoon, temperature warm to the middle 70s, and by the weekend, we're right back in the 80s. Return to index of stories...

THE STOCK MARKET ENDED 2014 UP. BUT WITH A LOT OF VOLATILITY.

THERE WERE AREAS OF THE STOCK MARKET THAT DID VERY WELL AND OTHERS THAT DIDN'T DO SO WELL.

HOW DID THAT AFFECT PORTFOLIO RETURNS LAST YEAR?

FINANCIAL ADVISOR JIM NOLTE IS HERE WITH SOME PERSPECTIVE. Return to index of stories...

WELLS FARGO-OC SS B

· I think, generally speaking, people will be a little disappointed with their mutual fund returns for 2014. The Dow Jones industrial average was up 7.52% for 2014. The S&P 500 was up 11.39% in 2014. The average return for conservative allocation funds in 2014 was 4.46% according to MorningStar.

· Basically, large Cap domestic Stocks did great in 2014. Other asset classes - not so much.

· For instance, small-cap stocks tend to outperform large-cap stocks. Not so in 2014. Small caps were up just 4.4%.

· The general consensus was that international stocks would parallel the growth of the American stock market. That didn't happen. International stocks were up just 3.2%

· and what about emerging economies. They have been a driving force for global market returns for the past four or five years. In 2014 emerging markets were up just 2.55%

· There was a large difference in performance between the different economic sectors.

· Income investments tend to react inversely with interest rates. When interest rates decrease, income investments do very well. When interest rates increase, income investments tend to decrease in value.

· The general consensus at the beginning of 2014, was that utility stocks were fairly valued. Some analysts felt that they were overvalued. Many analysts were worried about the utility market at the beginning of the year. Some suggested that their clients reduce their exposure to utility stocks.

· As it turned out utility stocks were the best performers of all in 2014 - up 24%

· and let's not forget about the energy sector. As the world economy continues to expand the demand for energy would continue to grow. So energy stocks look like a good bet in 2014.

· I bet you can guess what the worst performing sector was in 2014. The energy sector was down almost 10% for the year.

· As a financial advisor I have always counseled clients to maintain a diversified portfolio. That old saying "don't put all your eggs in one basket" has always made sense and still make sense.

· I believe that a diversified portfolio is the key for positive long-term results in the stock market.

· Studies have shown that proper allocation is the most important factor to stock market success.

· That being said, in 2014 the average return for a diversified and balance portfolio was 4% to 5%.

· Last year, a portfolio of dividend paying utility stocks would have one all the prizes. Return to index of stories...

SOLE SURVIVOR-PKG

I remember feeling angry and survivor's guilt. Why didn't my brother survive? Why didn't anybody? Why me?

IF THERE'S ANYONE WHO CAN RELATE TO WHAT 7-YEAR-OLD SAILOR GUTZLER IS GOING THROUGH AS THE LONE SURVIVOR OF A PLANE CRASH…IT'S THIS WOMAN.

Good Evening, More than 143 people died at Detroit's Metro Airport tonight.

A light DC 9 crash shortly after takeoff.

CECILIA CICHAN WAS 4 YEARS OLD WHEN SHE SURVIVED THE CRASH OF NORTHWEST FLIGHT 255….

THE PHOENIX BOUND DC 9--- WENT DOWN ON AUGUST 16TH, 1987, MOMENTS AFTER TAKING OFF FROM DETROIT.

We saw a chair that was laying upside down and we picked up the chair. And underneath it, was little Cecilia-the survivor.

CECILIA LOST HER PARENTS AND 6 YEAR OLD BROTHER…. ABOUT A THIRD OF HER BODY SUFFERED BURNS….

SHE HAS RARELY SPOKEN PUBLICLY ABOUT THE CRASH… BUT WAS AMONG THOSE PROFILED IN the CNN DOCUMENTARY… SOLE SURVIVOR.

I got this tattoo as a reminder of where I've come from and I see it as, you know, so many things--- scars-whatever-were put on my body against my will and I decided to put this on my body for myself. I think that me surviving was random, I just happened to be at the right place at the right time.

STILL, EXPERTS SAY BIOLOGY AND PHYSICS MAY PLAY A ROLE, TOO, IN HELPING CHILDREN SURVIVE A CRASH.

A child has several advantages in a crash environment. Their bones are more pliable so they can withstand forces, higher forces without fracture.

CECILIA, NOW IN HER 30'S, WAS RAISED BY AN AUNT AND UNCLE WHO HELPED HER MAINTAIN PRIVACY…

I'm happily married to my high school sweetheart; I'm studying to get my Masters in Art Therapy….

I'm happy, I've never been happier. I think about the accident everyday. It's kinda hard not to think about it.

BUT SHE HAS NEVER BEEN TO THE FLIGHT MEMORIAL….

The family members of flight 255-they know that I like to be private. They understand I don't want to be in the spotlight.

AND TODAY, CECILIA SAYS SHE HAS NO FEARS ABOUT STEPPING ON AN AIRPLANE.

Flying doesn't scare me, I have this mentality that if something bad happened to me once on a plane, it's not going to happen again, like the odds are just astronomical.

About 200 THOUSAND cardiac pacemakers are implanted every year in this country.

THE DEVICE, WHICH FITS IN THE PALM OF YOUR HAND, IS USED MOSTLY TO REGULATE A SLOW HEART BEAT.

IN THE 50-PLUS YEARS THEY'VE BEEN IN USE, THIS TECHNOLOGY KEEPS GETTING BETTER.

AMY OSHIER HAS MORE IN OUR HEALTH MATTERS REPORT. Return to index of stories...

THE IMPLANTABLE PACEMAKER. FOR DECADES NOW, IT HAS HELPED KEEP OUR TICKERS TICKING.

DR. SUBHASH KSHETRAPAL/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

1:34 The pacemakers we currently use are called demand pacemakers which means that the device is so smart that it is sitting and watching your own pulse or heart beat and if the heart would stop or slow down the pacemaker takes over right away and the patient does not notice any difference.

FOR USE IN PEOPLE WITH A SLOW HEART BEAT, THE PACEMAKER USES LOW-ENERGY ELECTRICAL PULSES TO OVERCOME FAULTY SIGNALING. THE PACEMAKER IS NOW PART OF A DEFIBRILLATOR.

DR. SUBHASH KSHETRAPAL/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

6:08 All the defibrillators have a built-in pacemaker but they're mainly used if the heart goes rapid at 200 beats per minute and the patient is going to collapse or pass out. The defibrillator gives a shock and the pacemaker is a backup.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Keeping pace with pacemakers. Currently, devices consist of a battery, generator and wires or leads that connect to the heart. The latest technology now in testing in the U.S. is a wireless device.

DR. SUBHASH KSHETRAPAL/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

4:33 Recently pacemakers were introduced which will be wireless. There will not be a need of a wire and these are implanted, through the groin and placed inside the ventricle on the right side.

ANOTHER STEP FORWARD IS THE MRI-FRIENDLY PACEMAKER. ONE THAT IS APPROVED FOR DIAGNOSTIC TESTING. MAKING THE DEVICE A SAFE CHOICE FOR MORE PEOPLE.

DR. SUBHASH KSHETRAPAL/INTERVENTIONAL CARDIOLOGIST

RUNS:

3:40 Pacemakers have been around for more than 50 years and they have made a major change in the quality of life.

FORECAST-WXWALL

WOMEN BORDER PATROL-VO IN AUX SET 2 SHOT

CYNDI LUNDEBERG SHOWS US WHY. Return to index of stories...

WOMEN BORDER PATROL-PKG

"Lift, you have to be able to lift it and throw it in there."

MARIA RODRIGUEZ IS LESS THAN ONE PERCENT OF THE POPULATION. WHILE SHE'S A MOTHER AND A VETERAN, SHE'S ALSO ONE OF THE VERY FEW WOMEN PROTECTING OUR BORDER.

I feel proud of doing what I do that job satisfaction I can go home and sleep and know I did a good job that day.

THE U-S BORDER PATROL RECOGNIZES THEY NEED MORE AGENTS LIKE RODRIGUEZ. SO THEY ARE LOOKING TO HIRE MORE FEMALES.

THAT'S BECAUSE THE NUMBER OF FEMALES CROSSING THE BORDER HAS QUADRUPLED IN RECENT YEARS AND THE NUMBER OF FEMALE BORDER PATROL AGENTS HAS REMAINED LOW.

WHICH MEANS MALE AGENTS SOMETIMES HAVE TO CONDUCT INVASIVE SEARCHES ON YOUNG AND FEMALE IMMIGRANTS. MORE FEMALE AGENTS WOULD HELP EASE THIS PROCESS.

A female's not around a male can do it but we would prefer, we'd want people to feel comfortable.

WHILE PATROLLING AGENT RODRIGUEZ HAS CROSSED PATHS WITH DRUG DEALERS AND CRIMINALS AND SINCE SHE'S USUALLY ALONE IT'S UP TO HER TO STOP THEM, WHICH SHE SAYS AS A FEMALE ISN'T ALWAYS EASY.

Anything that can happen I have to go through different types of scenarios especially like kind of being small. of anything that could occur out in the field any type of challenges that I may face because because I am a female out there so I train a lot harder because of that reason.

A typical day for Agent Rodriguez while she's patrolling the dessert involves looking for things that shouldn't be there things like foot prints or anything out of the norm. She is just one of a few dozen agents in the area.

ONLY 5% OF APPROXIMATELY 21,000 AGENTS AROUND THE COUNTRY ARE WOMEN.

AGENT RODRIGUEZ IS ONE OF THEM.

AGENT JUAN SANTANA SAYS WITH MORE WOMEN.THERE COULD BE MORE PROGRESS FOR THE AGENCY AS A WHOLE.

We learn from each other, agents come from different background so, I may do something one way someone may do it another way, it just builds a stronger unity between us and we just find new and better ways to do things.

AGENT RODRIGUEZ.SAYS SHE HOPES MORE WOMEN JOIN THE FORCE.

BECAUSE IT'S A LIFE ANYONE MAN OR WOMAN WOULD BE PROUD OF.

I'm really passionate about what I do. I've enjoyed every single piece of it, I've had opportunities to do something else but I just keep coming back. Return to index of stories...
