TESTING BILL FOLO-AUX

THERE IS POWER IN NUMBERS.

SO SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS ACROSS SOUTWHEST FLORIDA JUST TEAMED UP.

THEY WANT THE ABILITY TO OPT OUT OF STATE MANDATED TESTING --

AND START THE SCHOOL YEAR EARLIER.

TODAY AT 6 -- WE GAVE YOU AN EXCLUSIVE LOOK AT A PROPOSED BILL THAT WOULD DO ALL THAT.

TONIGHT, NBC2'S LAURA ROBERTS WENT TO PARENTS TO SEE WHAT THEY THINK. Return to index of stories...

TESTING BILL FOLO-PKG

In late August, the Lee County School Board made the bold decision to opt out of state testing --

and quickly reversed that vote just days later fearing the ramifications.

But now the district has a new idea for getting rid of these tests -

and parents want to hear it.

Michelle Myers

Lee County

38:22 these are weighted so heavily and they're so much pressure and emphasis on it, i really feel in the long run they're just doing a disservice to children's educaiton:29

Lee county is joining Collier, Charlotte, Hendry and Glades counties to draft a bill that would allow them to set their own standards --

mary castillon

42:47

some kids jsut are not good test takers

and still satisfy the state when it comes to measuring student achievement.

heather garrett

Lee County

43:29

i think that testing can be a good thing but i don't like them being so heavily weighted:35

The bill gives the districts more local control by creating what they call a region of innovation.

But it doesn't get into detail about what the districts will do instead when it comes to testing.

Nancy Graham

Superintendent, Lee Co Schools

23:21

we believe that there can be measures put in place that would get us to the same end:25

Parents say they support the idea --

but want to make sure there's a plan in place.

Michelle Myers

38:53

i think it's great in concept but how it's concretely going to be carried out, i don't know how that's going to work long term:00

The bill -- still in its draft stages -- would also allow the school districts the ability to start the year earlier.

No word yet on if the governor supports it.

EARLY STEPS PROGRAM SAVED-PKG

after 11 years of service---

It was a call early steps program director Trina puddefoot says she

never expected.

Sot

We have never in the history of the program had a call half way

through the year telling us that we were going to be cut.

13:34/34-13:35:40

Last week, the state health department told all 10 locations in southwest florida

that more than 4 million dollars would be cut from the program's funding

right in the *middle of their fiscal year.

Sot

We're devastated that the children wouldn't be able to receive the

service that we've currently been giving them.

The program helps 1800 disabled children in our area.

Sit

The quality and the way we provide services would not be able to

continue with that big of a budget cut in such a short time.

13:27:55-13:28:01

the department says the cuts originated from Washington--after the

grant for the program was reduced by over 3 million dollars.

this afternoon the state health department said they found a way to keep the funding intact for the rest of the year.

Sot

We are really relieved to hear that were going to have that budget restored.

13:33:08-13:23:12

But the relief is only temporary.

The two agencies will meet again next week

to discuss possible changes to the *upcoming fiscal year.

Puddefoot says, she hopes the state keeps one thing in mind---

having delays in development.
