HELLO-ONCAM-PUSH

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY.

I'M STCEY DEFFENBAUGH.

TODAY IS SUNDAY, JANUARY 26TH.

AS TEMPERATURES IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA RISE.

WE COULD BE PREPARING FOR ANOTHER COLD FRONT.

FOR MORE ON OUR FORECAST AND WHAT WE CAN EXPECT IN THE WEEK AHEAD.

HERE'S METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

We keep adding on to the warm up today as temperatures climb back into the 70s.

Some of our inland areas may even manage to reach the upper 70s, but coastal regions will stay cooler thanks to a chilly wind off the Gulf of Mexico, which will keep highs at the beaches around the low 70s.

today will end up being a little cloudier than yesterday thanks to a weak disturbance to our northwest, but we'll manage to work in some rays of sun as well. Rain will be hard to find today, but it's not completely out of the question for a few spotty sprinkles to form to the north around Charlotte and Sarasota County.

The warming trend rolls along into the upcoming week until the next cold front arrives Wednesday. Before this next batch of chilly weather moves in, though, daytime temperatures will approach 80 degrees Monday afternoon and mid to upper 70s on Tuesday.

The cool air starts trickling in Wednesday, and we'll even see the opportunity for a few showers Wednesday as the front sags south down the Florida peninsula.

Forecast models are a bit at odds beyond Wednesday, but one possible scenario is for a cold Thursday with morning temperatures as low as the 30s and 40s and afternoon highs only in the 60s.

We'll need to keep monitoring the potential for this next blast of cold air for the middle of next week, so keep checking your First Alert Forecast on nbc-2.com.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

IN THE PAST, PEOPLE WITH SEVERE SPRAINS MAY HAVE SUFFERED WITH PAIN AND DYSFUNCTION RATHER THAN GO THROUGH SURGERY.

HEALTH MATTERS: SCOPING OUT THE ANKLE-PKG

THE TECHNIQUE OF INSERTING A TINY CAMERA INTO THE BODY ALONG WITH

SURGICAL TOOLS HAS FOR A NUMBER OF YEARS HELPED DOCTORS GET INTO

TIGHT SPACES. CALLED ARTHROSCOPIC PROCEDURES, THEY ARE COMMON

TODAY IN KNEE AND SHOULDER REPAIRS. NOW SURGEONS ARE LOWERING

THEIR SIGHTS, TO THE ANKLE.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

1:59 Studies prove that it's the same exact outcomes as the older ways of doing it,

except your not making a big open incision.

HISTORICALLY, FIXING A DAMAGED ANKLE REQUIRED AN OPERATION TO

OPEN THE AREA WITH A LARGE INCISION TO GIVE SURGEONS ACCESS. IN

TURN IT REQUIRED SUTURING TO CLOSE THE SITE, FOLLOWED BY DOWNTIME

FOR HEALING. THE ARTHROSCOPIC APPROACH IS MUCH LESS INVASIVE.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

3:01 You're using a lot small instrumentation. 1:34 Which means a little camera into the

ankle to be able to repair the ligament through two, small punched incisions.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

This surgery isn't for everyone or every injury. Ankle arthroscopy can be used to

mend torn ligaments from a bad sprain, repair cartilage damage and remove bone

spurs. Helping people who were living with pain because they wanted to avoid a major

operation.

DR. ANDREW BELIS/FOOT & ANKLE SURGEON

RUNS:

2:25 Each patient, we're finding we're able to push the envelope and get them back to

activity a little bit quicker. So it makes it a very exciting time to have this new procedure

at our fingertips to be able to help these patients with chronic ankle weakness or chronic

ankle instability.

CRIME STOPPERS-PKG

For Casey Hicks, Robert Raybon was the light of her life - the father of her newborn

son and the man who could make her smile under any circumstance. But in the early

morning hours of December 28, 2012, Casey received a phone call that would change her

life. Her 35 year old boyfriend was murdered in Fort Myers.

Casey Hicks - "I would never have thought I'd live through, or experience something

like that - losing someone you love to such violence and hate."

Detectives say an unknown assailant gunned Raybon down just before 5 a.m. near the

intersection of Bert Drive and Clara Street - possibly in a robbery gone bad.

Casey Hicks - "He told me he was on his way home, and then it happened within 10

minutes of that."

Getting the news was life shattering for Hicks and Raybon's family, including his 8 year

old son who was staying with the couple when tragedy hit.

Casey Hicks - "It's hard, and then trying to stay strong at the same time for them when

you're breaking down at the same time yourself. But you have to stay strong for the kids.

Because it's not fair to them. It's not fair to him that he had to lose his father."

Trish Routte: Unlike many unsolved homicides, there's actually been tremendous interest

amongst community members in finding the person who killed Raybon. The case

detective says she's approached often by Raybon's family and friends hoping to hear that

she's one step closer to finding his killer.

Those who knew Raybon remember him as a family man who could always be counted

on to help friends in need. Which begs the question of why someone would take his life

so violently?

Casey Hicks - "Everyone's taking it very hard. We just need to know and lay it to rest.

It's just a tragedy that somebody would do that to somebody."

The answers as to who pulled the trigger and why are absolutely out there - it's just a

matter of someone having the bravery to do the right thing and make that phone call.

Casey Hicks - "Somebody just needs to come forward and help us out. It just needs to

stop. I miss him so much."

For Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, I'm Trish Routte.

FORECAST-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Return to index of stories...
