BREAKING NEWS RIGHT NOW ON NBC-2.

REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN TREY RADEL WILL RESIGN FROM CONGRESS.

I'M CHAD OLIVER.

AND I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH.

NBC-2 HAS CONFIRMED THAT RADEL is resigning from his position.

WITHIN THE LAST 15 MINUTES, WE RECEIVED THE CONGRESSMAN'S OFFICIAL RESIGNATION LETTER - SENT TO REPUBLICAN HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER.

IT SAYS IN PART - QUOTE: "IT IS MY BELIEF THAT PROFESSIONALLY I CANNOT FULLY AND EFFECTIVELY SERVE AS A UNITED STATES REPRESENTATIVE TO THE PLACE I LOVE AND CALL HOME."

NBC-2'S NICK CILETTI IS GATHERING THE LATEST INFORMATION.

HE BEGINS OUR TEAM COVERAGE RIGHT NOW AT ELEVEN.

RADEL RESIGNS NUTS BOLTS-trxCAM99 NEWSROOM

I SPOKE WITH THE POLITICO.COM REPORTER WHO BROKE THE STORY EARLY THIS MORNING.

JAKE SHERMAN WOULD NOT REVEAL HIS SOURCES TO ME AND WOULDN'T SAY WHAT POSITION THEY HOLD IN WASHINGTON D-C.

BUT HE WAS ABLE TO TELL US THAT REP. RADEL PLANS TO SEND HOUSE SPEAKER JOHN BOEHNER HIS LETTER OF RESIGNATION LATER TODAY.

WE HAVE SINCE GOTTEN OUR HANDS ON THAT LETTER TO CONFIRM IT FOR OURSELVES. Return to index of stories...

RADEL RESIGNS NUTS BOLTS-vo

NBC-2 HAS STAYED ON TOP OF EVERY ANGLE OF THE RADEL STORY SINCE IT BROKE LAST NOVEMBER.

THAT'S WHEN WE FOUND OUT RADEL WAS BUSTED FOR BUYING COCAINE DURING A STING OPERATION IN D-C.

THIS HAPPENED IN LATE OCTOBER.

RADEL LATER CONFESSED TO BUYING AND USING THE DRUG.

HE WAS SENTENCED TO A YEAR OF PROBATION AND WENT TO A REHAB FACILITY IN NAPLES FOR ALCOHOLISM.

DURING THIS TIME.HE TOOK A LEAVE OF ABSENCE FROM CONGRESS.

JUST A FEW WEEKS AGO.HE WAS BACK ON THE JOB ON CAPITOL HILL -- VOWING NOT TO STEP DOWN.DESPITE SOME PEOPLE FROM HIS OWN PARTY CALLING FOR HIM TO QUIT.

RIGHT NOW -- WE KNOW THE HOUSE ETHICS COMMITTEE IS LOOKING INTO RADEL'S ACTIONS.BUT POLITICO.COM DOESN'T SEEM TO THINK RADEL'S DECISION TO LEAVE HIS POST AT CONGRESS HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH WHAT COULD BE IN THAT REPORT. Return to index of stories...

1:01 - 1:25

I don't have any sense that this is b/c of the Ethics Committee Report. Obviously, this is a guy who says he's trying to get healthy and get his life together. It doesn't sound like this is a political consideration. Although the politics of this are tough for Radel. He would have had a lot of primary challengers, he would have had a tough re-election a couple months from now. So he's obviously going to avoid all of that now. Return to index of stories...

NOW THAT RADEL IS STEPPING DOWN.WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE PEOPLE OF SOUTHWEST FLORIDA?

GOVERNOR RICK SCOTT HAS TWO OPTIONS -- HE CAN EITHER CALL FOR A SPECIAL ELECTION OR HE CAN JUST WAIT UNTIL THE NOVEMBER ELECTION BY DEFAULT.

A NUMBER OF PEOPLE HAVE ALREADY VOWED TO RUN AGAINST RADEL.

I'LL KEEP WORKING MY SOURCES TO SEE WHAT I CAN FIND OUT.

RIGHT NOW -- A HOUSE ETHICS COMMITTEE INVESTIGATION IS UNDERWAY CONCERNING RADEL'S ARREST.

I CALLED THE COMMITTEE, ASKING WHAT'S NEXT --

THIS HAPPENED IN 2012 -- WHEN JESSIE JACKSON JR. RESIGNED FROM CONGRESS.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"A warm start to the week"

Despite the cloudiness yesterday, temperatures still managed to work their way into the middle 70s across Southwest Florida. The warming trend continues as we start the new week with afternoon highs closing in on 80°. We'll be tracking our next chance for rain associated with another weather system, followed by a very brief cool down.

Lots of sunshine will take us into the mid day hour with temperatures climbing into the lower 70s. During the afternoon, expect mostly to partly sunny skies with highs near 80° in town. Readings will be a few degrees cooler at our beaches and coastal locations as winds come in off the chilly gulf waters.

Tonight, a few clouds will remain in the forecast along with overnight lows dipping into the 60s. Areas of patchy fog will be possible by sunrise tomorrow especially east of I-75.

Our weather pattern will stay fairly dry through Tuesday with partly sunny skies. Afternoon highs will continue to climb into the upper 70s. This warm up is ahead of another weather system that will not only bring the chance for rain late Wednesday and into Thursday, but also a brief cool down by late in in the week. Now that models are coming into better agreement, the core of the cold air looks to stay well to the north of the area. By Thursday, morning lows will only bottom out in the upper 40s to lower 50s, with highs in the upper 60s. A gradual warm up will commence on Friday with highs on track to reach the lower 80s by the weekend. Return to index of stories...

DRAMA -- ON THE HIGH SEAS.

PASSENGERS ON BOARD ROYAL CARIBBEAN'S "EXPLORER OF THE SEAS" SHIP. SET OUT FOR AN ISLAND VOYAGE OF A LIFETIME - INSTEAD TONIGHT, THE SHIP. DOCKED -- ILLNESS SICKENING HUNDREDS ON BOARD.

Never come back again. Not on this cruise line. We were here two years ago. The same thing, ship was overrun with this sickness.

THAT SICKNESS - WHICH CAN SPREAD VERY QUICKLY - - IS WHAT HEALTH OFFICIALS FROM THE CDC ARE INVESTIGATING; BOARDING THE SHIP TODAY IN ST. THOMAS ALONG WITH A EPIDEMIOLOGIST.

What happens is that a passenger comes on board, unknowingly having the virus, the virus spreads so readily and then you have all those people in a confined space over a long period of time.

MORE THAN 300 PASSENGERS AND CREW FELL VICTIM TO THE ILLNESS.

A ROYAL CARIBBEAN SPOKESPERSON TELLS CNN THEY HAVE RESPONDED WELL TO THE OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATION ADMINISTERED ON BOARD.

THE CRUISE LINE SAYING PRESENTLY THERE'S NO KNOWN CAUSE FOR THE OUTBREAK AND APOLOGIZED FOR THE DISRUPTION TO ITS GUESTS.

THIS LATEST OUTBREAK COMES in the wake OF **ANOTHER** ROYAL CARIBBEAN SHIP, IN THE HEADLINES - LAST WEEK - FOR A NOROVIRUS OUTBREAK.

THE MAJESTY OF THE SEAS, DOCKED IN MIAMI AFTER SIXTY PLUS PASSENGERS AND CREW GOT SICK; SUFFERING FROM SEVERE GASTROINTESTINAL SYMPTOMS.

I spend a whole night on the toilet.

THE NOROVIRUS. A FAST-MOVING BUG - HAS CAUSED NEARLY 21-MILLION ILLNESSES -- AND AS MANY AS 800 DEATHS, SAYS THE CDC.

THIS WEEKEND'S INCIDENT HAS DELAYED THE CRUISE LINER WHICH IS UNDERGOING EXTENSIVE SANITIZING. FOR SOME PASSENGERS, THOUGH. THE DAMAGE. ALREADY DONE.

You know. any sickness. but it's the most disorganized trip I've ever been on in my life, and i'm almost 80 years old, it's sad. Return to index of stories...

"He shot her and then 10-15, maybe not even 10 seconds later i heard the second gunshot. I basically just scrambled out of the store on my hands and knees right by the male employee who was down on the ground. still alive."

CHRIS SAYS HE IS HAUNTED BY THE FACT THAT HE WAS THE LAST PERSON TO TALK TO TYLER JOHNSON BEFORE HE DIED.

"He asked me if it was like still bad outside. I told him it really wasn't snowing yet, but it's going to be cold all week. He told me, yeah, he was from Mount Airy. I was the last person he talked to before he died." Return to index of stories...

STATE OF THE UNION PREVIEW-trxPLASMA

ALTHOUGH THE BUZZ IN WASHINGTON IS ABOUT TREY RADEL'S RESIGNATION.

THERE IS PLENTY OF WORK AT HAND.

THE PRESIDENT IS PREPARING HIS STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS TOMORROW NIGHT.

IT'S EXPECTED TO HELP LAUNCH HIS SECOND-TERM REBOOT -- FOLLOWING A ROUGH 20-13.

BRIANNA KEILAR REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

STATE OF THE UNION PREVIEW-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

IT'S CRUNCH TIME FOR PRESIDENT OBAMA.

MAKING FINAL EDITS ON A SPEECH HE HOPES WILL BE THE START OF A TURNAROUND.

I think the public ended 2013 very frustrated.

OBAMA'S APPROVAL RATING IS SLOWLY RECOVERING, BUT HE'S STILL MORE UNPOPULAR THAN AT ANY OF HIS PAST STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESSES - DUE IN PART TO THE BOTCHED ROLLOUT OF HIS HEALTH CARE LAW.

ON TUESDAY HE'LL TOUT A NEW PLAN TO NARROW THE GAP BETWEEN RICH AND POOR.

EVEN IF HE HAS TO GO IT ALONE.

He's not going to tell the American people he's going to wait for Congress. He's going to move forward in areas like job training, education, manufacturing, on his own to try to restore opportunities for American families.

THAT MEANS EXECUTIVE ACTIONS AND PUBLIC-PRIVATE PARTNERSHIPS, TRYING TO GET SOMETHING DONE IN A KEY MIDTERM ELECTION YEAR FACING AN UNCOOPERATIVE REPUBLICAN-CONTROLLED HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES.

He says this is the year of action.

It sounds vaguely like a threat.

THE GO-AROUND-CONGRESS PLAN, ALREADY REJECTED BY REPUBLICANS, WHO SAY OBAMA'S ABUSING HIS EXECUTIVE POWER.

I think it also has a certain amount of arrogance in the sense that one of the fundamental principles of our country were the checks and balances.

THE ONE MAJOR LEGISLATIVE ITEM OBAMA HAS HIS EYE ON IS IMMIGRATION REFORM, DESPITE HOUSE REPUBLICAN OPPOSITION TO A COMPREHENSIVE PLAN.

IT WAS ONE OF OBAMA'S BIG AGENDA ITEMS IN LAST YEAR'S STATE OF THE UNION, BUT IT STALLED, ALONG WITH EXPANDING BACKGROUND CHECKS ON GUN SALES AND INCREASING THE MINIMUM WAGE -- WHICH HE WILL PUSH FOR AGAIN TUESDAY NIGHT.

Presidential power is something that's fought out every day, and one speech is not fundamentally going to change his position, but what he can do potentially is begin to lay out themes that define the 2014 legislative and electoral battle.

IF YOU'RE LIKE MANY WORKING ADULTS WHO DREAD GOING BACK TO THE GRIND ON MONDAY MORNING. YOU'RE STUCK SINGING THE "SUNDAY NIGHT BLUES."

THE INFORMALLY COINED TERM APPARENTLY APPLIES TO A LOT OF PEOPLE. 78-PERCENT OF RESPONDENTS TO A RECENT MONSTER.COM POLL SAID THEY EXPERIENCE THE "SUNDAY NIGHT BLUES."

"It can translate into a lowered mood, an increase in worry, or anxiety and an irritability as well."

CLEVELAND CLINIC PSYCHOLOGIST DR. SCOTT BEA PRESCRIBES PLANNING SOME KIND OF ACTIVITY FOR SUNDAY NIGHT -- MAKE A BIG FAMILY DINNER. OR WATCH A T-V SHOW YOU D-V-R'D.

"Maybe involving the kids or involving the family in some group activity that keeps us engaged with each other rather than intrusive thoughts about our work week or school week."

ALSO -- UNPLUG. TECHNOLOGY MAKES IT EASY FOR PEOPLE TO BRING WORK HOME. PERHAPS NEVER GIVING THEM AN OPPORTUNITY TO RE-CHARGE THEIR BRAINS FULLY.

"So let's put the peach on like this."

CHORES LIKE PACKING LUNCHES FOR THE NEXT DAY ARE USUALLY SAVED FOR SUNDAY NIGHT. BUT EXPERTS SAY THAT PREP WORK CAN BE DONE DURING A TIME THAT'S A LITTLE EASIER. LIKE A SUNDAY MORNING.

THIS WAY -- THE REST OF SUNDAY CAN BE A TRUE DAY OF REST.

BOOTH ALERT-trxSS

BREAKING NEWS JUST COMING IN FROM CHARLOTTE COUNTY.

A SIX YEAR MISSING PERSON CASE NOW HAS SOME RESOLUTION.

SKELETAL REMAINS FOUND IN THE PIRATE HARBOR SECTION OF PUNTA GORDA HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS DANNY MORDENTI.

THE 23-YEAR OLD WAS REPORTED MISSING IN 20008.

The skeletal remains found earlier this month in the Pirate Harbor section of Punta Gorda have been identified as those of Danny Paul Mordenti, who was reported missing in May 2008.

On January 10, 2014, the new owners of a residence in the 24000 block of Jolly Roger Blvd. were having the lot beside their residence cleared of underbrush. The workers found a wallet in the brush that contained Mordenti's identification. When the new owner looked further into the underbrush, he was what appeared to be human skeletal remains in the area and a rope hanging from a tree.

Major Crimes detectives and Crime Scene Technicians responded and recovered the remains and any other evidence remaining in the area. The remains were turned over to the Medical Examiner's Office for analysis.

A comparison of Mordenti's dental records confirmed the remains to be those of Danny Paul Mordenti. Detectives have notified Mordenti's relatives of the findings.

Mordenti was 23 years old when he was reported missing by his grandmother on May 23, 2008. At that time, deputies used both the Sheriff's Office's helicopter and bloodhound to try to locate the missing man. The dog led deputies from the grandmother's Jolly Roger Blvd. home to Burnt Store Road, a distance of more than a mile.

Further anthropological forensic testing is still pending with the Medical Examiner's Office. Return to index of stories...

"She's one of the best horses in the North Shore."

SHE'S A PRIZE HORSE.

AND WE ALMOST LOST HER.

THAT'S MOONSHINE, A TWO-THOUSAND-POUND FEMALE -- STUCK IN ICE WATER AND MUD UP TO HER NECK.

"I guess if we hadn't been walking, I don't think anyone would have seen her."

AMY AND BOB CAVILLA ARE THE ONES WHO SPOTTED HER.

MOONSHINE, CURIOUS AS SHE IS, HAD FALLEN THROUGH THE ICE NEAR HER HOME IN HAMILTON.

CREWS WERE QUICKLY IN A RACE AGAINST THE CLOCK.

"It was a pretty big job to get a horse of about two-thousand pounds out of the water."

BUT FIREFIGHTERS AND RESCUERS CAME FROM ALL OVER ESSEX COUNTY.

THEY STRAPPED MOONSHINE WITH ROPES AND CHAINS AND TUGGED ON HER WITH A CRANE TRUCK.

UNTIL FINALLY.

THAT MUD BUDGED, AND SHE WAS FREE AT LAST.

"It's almost like they know you're helping them."

"I was a basket case, but I had full faith they were going to get her out."

IT TOOK MOONSHINE A LITTLE WHILE TO GET THOSE ICE COLD LEGS BACK UNDERNEATH HER.

BUT SHE EVENTUALLY GOT BACK TO THE BARN ON HER OWN POWER.

HYPOTHERMIC, BUT EXPECTED TO BE JUST FINE.

"She's nice and warm; we have IV fluids going into her right now."

"She's one in a million of a horse, so it's nice to see that she's happy; she's eating."

AND LUCKY TO BE ALIVE. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-CLIP

Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

WHAT YOU DON'T KNOW, CAN HURT YOU. METABOLIC SYNDROME FALLS INTO

THAT CATEGORY. MANY PEOPLE HAVE IT, DON'T KNOW IT- DON'T EVEN KNOW

WHAT IT IS.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

:13 It's basically five metabolic abnormalities that when combined significantly increase

your risk for cardiovascular disease and diabetes.

CONSIDER THEM A GROUP OF RISK FACTORS: HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE,

HIGH BLOOD SUGAR, HIGH BAD CHOLESTEROL, LOW GOOD CHOLESTEROL

AND BELLY FAT. THE MORE COMPONENTS YOU HAVE, THE GREATER YOUR

HEALTH RISK.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

1:00 We've known for a long time that when you see patients with all of these

abnormalities together they significantly increase the risk more then they individually do.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

At the heart of all these, the common thread relates to obesity. These conditions are

impacted by weight. Control the weight, and you can lower the risk.

DR. SAL LACAGNINA/VP HEALTH & WELLNESS

RUNS:

7:07: When people will change their nutrition, what they actually eat, you can effect

your blood pressure right away, your blood sugar levels go down, your cholesterol level

goes down and you start losing weight. So if we're looking for one thing that will make a

difference in the whole metabolic syndrome, Just changing your diet.
