FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

MORE WARMTH FOR TUESDAY

It was a great start to the work week Monday across Southwest Florida, with sunshine and highs in the low 80s. Expect quiet conditions this evening, with temps only falling into the 60s & 70s. Fog will likely develop overnight tonight, with mild lows in the low 60s.

The warm weather continues into Tuesday. The fog will burn off in the morning hours, with sunshine for much of the day and highs again in the low 80s. Overnight lows will only fall into the low to mid 60s.

A powerful cool front will begin to approach the area on Wednesday. This will result in more cloud cover and the possibility of a few rain showers. High temps on Wednesday will only be in the low 70s.

Better rain chances will arrive overnight Wednesday into Thursday. Plenty of cloud cover is expected on Thursday, with highs only in the upper 60s.

The cool spell will be short-lived, as warmer air works into the region starting Friday. Sunshine will return across the area, with highs climbing into the upper 70s.

The weekend right now looks dry & warm, with highs climbing into the low 80s. Return to index of stories...

THE SIGNS ARE UP AND GROUND OFFICIALLY BROKEN.

TODAY CREWS COMPLETE DAY ONE OF A TEN YEAR 20 MILLION DOLLAR WATER PIPE OVERHAUL IN NAPLES PARK.

---SOT---

Diana Dueri, Project Manager

21:19:27-:30

Today is a big day for Collier County and the residents in Naples Park.

THE PROJECT IS A DIRECT RESULT OF SCENES LIKE THIS.

PORTIONS OF THE 50 YEAR OLD PIPES BREAK UP TO 20 TIMES A YEAR.

---SOT---

STEVE MESSNER, COLLIER COUNTY WATER DIRECTOR

21:15:14-:17

These are much-needed system improvements, very proactive approach.

BUTT TO

Judith Colern, 94th Ave Resident

21:33:20-:25

It's long overdue. It's an older neighborhood and I'm glad to see that they took an interest in us.

PHASE ONE INCLUDES 93RD AND 94TH AVENUES.

91ST AND 92ND ARE UP NEXT FOLLOWED BY TWO AVENUES AT A TIME AFTER THAT.

THE COUNTY SAYS EACH ROAD HAS UP TO A MILE OF PIPING, MAKING THE TOTAL REHAB 20 MILES WORTH.

THAT'S LIKE DRIVING FROM NAPLES TO ESTERO.

---SOT---

Diana Dueri, Project Manager

21:21:13-:18 It could be a little bit messy like, you know, any construction site.

BUTT TO

1:21:21-:27

Any under boil water notices, we are going to be knocking on the door, distributing flyers.

BUT IT COULD BE WORSE.

---STANDUP---

With the new water line on this side of the road, crews are having to use that machine to drill underneath to supply water lines across the street. That avoids having to tear up the asphalt, saving time, money, and having to completely shut down the roads.

PHASE ONE IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED BY NEXT FALL.

THE ENTIRE PROJECT COULD LAST INTO 2024.

---SOT---

Mary Lou Kanach, 94th Ave Resident

21:25:16-:21

I imagine it's a good idea to be doing it. Especially if these pipes are all beginning to break that just means it's going to be more of a problem as we go on.

COLLIER COUNTY SAYS PATIENCE NOW WILL PAY OFF DOWN THE ROAD.

---SOT---

JUDITH

21:33:37

Minor inconvenience for a lot of good results. Return to index of stories...

OLYMPIC SECURITY-SSTOPS OC

WE'RE ONLY 10 DAYS AWAY FROM THE WINTER OLYMPICS IN SOCHI.

YOU CAN WATCH THE GAMES RIGHT HERE ON NBC2.

TODAY THE OLYMPIC TORCH WENT TO THE RUSSIAN REPUBLIC OF DAGESTAN UNDER HEAVY SECURITY.

N-B-C'S RICHARD ENGEL HAS OUR STORY. Return to index of stories...

OLYMPIC SECURITY-PKG

"U.S. officials have repeatedly said the threat of terrorism before or during the Sochi games is high. Well that threat comes primarily from here, from Dagestan, and other parts of the North Caucuses. And today, the Olympic flame passed through."

THE OLYMPIC TORCH TODAY MADE ITS MOST DANGEROUS STOP TODAY, TO THE RUSSIAN REPUBLIC OF DAGESTAN.

BUT THREATS OF TERRORISM DRAMATICALLY CURTAILED THE TRADITIONAL RELAY.

SO ORGANIZERS INVITED A FEW THOUSAND SPECTATORS TO A SOCCER STADIUM TO WATCH THE TORCH DO LAPS AROUND THE FIELD, A CONTAINED EVENT AND ALL UNDER HEAVY GUARD.

A TORCH RELAY TO NOWHERE.

ISLAMIC MILITANTS FROM DAGESTAN IN HAVE REPEATEDLY THREATENED THE TORCH, THE OLYMPIC GAMES AND FOREIGN TOURISTS.

FOR THE MILITANTS, THE ATTENTION OF OLYMPICS BRING ARE CHANCE TO PUBLICLY AND PAINFULLY STRIKE BACK AT RUSSIA FOR ITS COMMANDO OPERATIONS.

LIKE THIS ONE JUST OVER A WEEK AGO.

WHEN POLICE AND SPECIAL FORCES ASSAULTED A SUSPECTED ISLAMIC MILITANT HIDEOUT IN THE DAGESTANI CAPITAL MAKHACHALA.

"Police say seven suspected militants were killed in this house. And there are now raids like it almost every night here in Dagestan. This is Russia's secret war, and militants have vowed to bring it to Sochi."

A NEIGHBOR SHOWED US WHERE A HALF DOZEN RUSSIAN TROOPS TOOK POSITION HER HOUSE.

ENGEL NATS:" The floor is covered in bullet casings."

AND FIRED OUT HER WIDOW.

DAGESTAN IS A WARZONE THAT NORMALLY WOULD HAVE NOTHING TO DO WITH THE OLYMPICS BUT SUDDENLY DOES: BECAUSE RUSSIA IS THE HOST, AND THEY'RE BEING HELD NEARBY.

"The Russian intelligence service the FSB today said it does not believe that a female suicide bomber has made her way into Sochi looking for a target as Russian police had previously warned. Richard Engel, NBC News, Dagestan." Return to index of stories...
