FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

MORE WARMTH FOR TUESDAY

It was a great start to the work week Monday across Southwest Florida, with sunshine and highs in the low 80s. Expect quiet conditions this evening, with temps only falling into the 60s & 70s. Fog will likely develop overnight tonight, with mild lows in the low 60s.

The warm weather continues into Tuesday. The fog will burn off in the morning hours, with sunshine for much of the day and highs again in the low 80s. Overnight lows will only fall into the low to mid 60s.

A powerful cool front will begin to approach the area on Wednesday. This will result in more cloud cover and the possibility of a few rain showers. High temps on Wednesday will only be in the low 70s.

Better rain chances will arrive overnight Wednesday into Thursday. Plenty of cloud cover is expected on Thursday, with highs only in the upper 60s.

The cool spell will be short-lived, as warmer air works into the region starting Friday. Sunshine will return across the area, with highs climbing into the upper 70s.

The weekend right now looks dry & warm, with highs climbing into the low 80s.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

RAMIRO PALMA DEPENDS ON THE COLLEGE PARKWAY BRIDGE.

WHAT HE DOESN'T KNOW -

Ramiro Palma - Driver / 08:48 driving the bridge everyday you don't really think about it all the time. 8:51

THIS BRIDGE IS CLASSIFIED "FUNCTIONALLY OBSOLETE" IN ITS MOST RECENT INSPECTION REPORT.

Ramiro Palma - Driver / 11:24 the bridges are the lifeline of Cape Coral. if we don't have the bridges, people are stuck on the Cape and they're not going to be able to find work or go to find work and the people can't come visit. 11:34

IT'S NOT JUST THE COLLEGE PARKWAY BRIDGE THAT IS CAUSE FOR CONCERN.

THE NBC2 INVESTIGATORS FOUND 114 OTHERS IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA THAT FALL INTO THE SAME CATEGORY.

BRIDGES LIKE THE ONE ON AIRPORT PULLING OVER BIG CYPRESS BASIN IN COLLIER; AND THE MYAKKA RIVER BRIDGE IN CHARLOTTE.

Jim Speiwak // A functionally obsolete bridge like this one here on College Parkway means it's not suitable for it's current use. It lacks things like safety shoulders and it's design cannot handle current traffic volumes, speeds and weights.

Maria Fernandez Porrat - Engineer // 42:06 There's always needs and there's always deficiency. 42:09

MARIA FERNANDEZ PORRAT IS PART OF A TEAM OF ENGINEERS THAT STUDIES FLORIDA'S INFRASTRUCTURE.

Maria Fernandez Porrat - Engineer // 23:20 the infrastructure is average in the state of Florida as graded. 23:24

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS --

EACH BRIDGE IS GIVEN A RATING ON A TYPICAL 0-100 SCALE.

FUNCTIONALITY MAKES UP A THIRD OF THAT SCORE.

THE U.S. 41 BRIDGE OVER THE CALOOSAHATCHEE RIVER RECEIVED A 57 -

IN SCHOOL GRADING TERMS, THAT WOULD BE AN "F."

Maria Fernandez Porrat - Engineer // 31:04 any number like that would put up a red flag. 31:07

ANOTHER RED FLAG --

THE BRIDGE HAS SURPASSED ITS 50 YEAR DESIGN LIFE SPAN.

Maria Fernandez Porrat - Engineer // 34:12 there are elements that we could actually bring them up to standards. 34:17

BUT THAT TAKES MONEY, A LOT OF IT.

DIGGING THROUGH FLORIDA D-O-T RECORDS -

SINCE 2010, REPAIR WORK ACCOUNTS FOR MORE THAN $36 MILLION DOLLARS ON LEE, COLLIER AND CHARLOTTE COUNTY BRIDGES.

ANOTHER $294 MILLION IS ON THE BOOKS AND THAT WORK HAS ALREADY STARTED.

BUT WITH BUDGETS TIGHT -

ENGINEERS FEAR THE MONEY WILL DRY UP.

Maria Fernandez Porrat - Engineer // 42:48 we're not saying that the funds are misused, we're saying that we need to allocate enough funding to make sure that when need comes, the funding is there. 43:01

nats

FOR RAMIRO AND 40,000 OTHER DRIVERS IT'S A PERFECT RIDE.

BRIDGE INSPECTIONS INVESTIGATION-LIVEU, Q & A

FUNCTIONALLY OBSOLETE ISN'T THE WORST RATING - TALK ABOUT STRUCTURALLY DEFICIENT.

IF THAT'S THE CASE JIM - HOW OFTEN ARE THESE BRIDGES LOOKED AT?

LOCAL GOVERNMENTS AND THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION MUST INSPECT EACH BRIDGE EVERY TWO YEARS.

THE COLLEGE PARKWAY BRIDGE AND THE US 41 OVER THE CALOOSAHATCHEE BRIDGES WERE LAST INSPECTED IN 2013.

EVEN THOUGH CLASSIFIED AS FUNCTIONALLY OBSOLETE, THEY DID PASS INSPECTION. Return to index of stories...
