FIRST WEATHER-WX ANI

"Showers today, followed by a cool down"

After a warm Tuesday with highs in the lower 80s, we'll be tracking a few changes over the next couple of days as a weather system moves across the Florida peninsula. This will increase our rain prospects through Thursday, along with a brief cool down.

Our morning will get off to a mild start with temperatures in the lower to middle 60s. We'll also be tracking areas of patchy fog, especially along the coast where a Dense Fog Advisory is in effect until 8am. The clouds will increase through the late morning and early afternoon hours, with a few passing showers from time to time. As a cold front passes to our south today, our winds will shift out of the north allowing cooler air to filter down the state. Daytime highs will be significantly cooler as they top out in the upper 60s to lower 70s.

Tonight, cloudy to overcast skies will give way to scattered showers across the area. Overnight lows will also be about 15° cooler as they dip into the upper 40s to lower 50s by early Thursday morning.

The clouds will stay pretty thick through Thursday afternoon, even after the rain fades away. A northerly breeze will keep temperatures in the middle 60s north of the Caloosahatchee, with upper 60s to the south.

High pressure will build in for the latter half of the week with a dry and partly sunny pattern. This cool down will be very brief in nature, as winds take a turn to the east and southeast with highs in the lower to middle 80s for the weekend. Return to index of stories...

Good morning, XX. Super Bowl is just days away, and I went up with the

Nats of cockpit

FROM THE MOMENT THE CANOPY CLOSES OVER THIS F-16 FIGHTER JET, IT'S CLEAR

THAT LT COLONEL STEVE ZIOMEK IS DEADLY SERIOUS.

WITH THAT, I'M ON A TRAINING MISSION WITH THE NEW JERSEY NATIONAL GUARD

DOWN THE RUNWAY FROM 0 TO 400 MILES PER HOUR IN ONLY 16 SECONDS

Nats Takeoff

IN THIS LIVE TRAINING EXERCISE, OUR SQUARDRON OF 3 F-16'S ARE TOLD TO

INTERCEPT A CESSNA THAT'S HEADED TOWARDS THE SUPER BOWL

WITHIN THREE TO FOUR MINUTES, THE PILOTS CAN SEE THE POTENTIAL THREAT.

WE DRAW IN CLOSER TO LOOK AT THE PLANE AND ITS PILOT.

NEXT, BECAUSE THE PLANE HAS NOT RESPONDED TO CONTROL TOWERS, THEY TRY A

SERIES OF MANUEVERS TO CONVINCE THE CESNA TO CHANGE DIRECTIONS

Nats roar of planes, engines from Cessna and Pierre's plane - 3 feet beside

jet, reach out and touch it

WE FLY BY WAGGING THEIR WINGS, THE INTERNATIONAL SYMBOL FOR CEASE AND DESIST

AND TO FOLLOW US.

WE FLY PAST THE PLANE, TRYING TO FORCE IT TO CHANGE DIRECTIONS

IF THAT DOESN'T WORK - THE COMMAND COULD BE GIVEN TO SHOOT DOWN THE PLANE

WITH MISSILES

LT COLONEL ZIOMEK

SOT PIERRE THOMAS AND LT PILOT / 177 FIGHTER SQUADS

Pierre: Are you prepared to shoot down a plane/attack something on the

ground if the order is given?

Pilot: Yes / We have to be ready for everything. / This

FUNNY WHAT YOU CAN FIND OUT ABOUT A STRANGER THESE DAYS.

JUST LOOKING ON AN APP CALLED BANJO WE COULD SEE EVERYONE WHO HAD GEO-TAGGING TURNED ON AND HAD POSTED THINGS TO THEIR SOCIAL MEDIA PAGES.

ONE OF THOSE WAS AN UNSUSPECTING FINANCIAL FINANCIAL PLANNER.

ON TWITTER HE HAD POSTED HE WAS ABOUT TO EAT CHICKEN AND WAFFLES.

LITTLE DID TRAVIS SICKLE KNOW, EMBEDDED IN THAT INNOCENT MESSAGE WAS HIS EXACT LOCATION. 18TH ST N AND CENTRAL AVE.,THE BURG BAR AND GRILL.

"You just walked right in here and caught me off guard."

WHEN IT COMES TO TWEETING, TRAVIS IS PRETTY MUCH A PRO. MORE THAN 17-HUNDRED TWEETS.

"Did you know it was that precise?"

"No. I had no idea."

"I think you just want to know that you have control over it really. Because you don't want to be going places and have people tracking where you're going, popping into restaurants while you're eating saying 'hey - I know who you are, but you don't know who I am."

"The GPS is pretty accurate to pin you down to about 15 feet."

KELLI BURNS TEACHES AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH FLORIDA'S SCHOOL OF MASS COMMUNICATIONS.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND GEO-TAGGING ARE OFTEN BIG TOPICS OF DISCUSSION IN THE CLASSROOM.

"A lot of people don't realize how much information they are putting out there about themselves."

"This information can be used to find out where they are or find out where they're not."

TRAVIS SAYS HE'LL PROBABLY USE IT STILL FOR WORK.TO HELP TELL PEOPLE ABOUT HIS JOB AND WHAT EXPOS HE'S AT.

BUT THE CHICKEN AND WAFFLES GEO-TAGS, THAT WILL PROBABLY BE TURNED OFF FROM NOW ON.

"To know where everybody is. I know the World's connected today but sometimes maybe you don't want to be connected. Maybe you just want to be going about your day. If people know where you are, it's kind of freaky." Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A SIMPLE, PAINLESS TEST IS BEING USED TO DETECT HEART DEFECTS IN NEWBORNS.

PKG:

ONE OF THE SIMPLEST TESTS PERFORMED ON NEWBORNS IN THE HOSPITAL

MAY BE ONE OF THE MOST VALUABLE. CALLED PULSE OXIMETRY, A CHEAP,

NON-INVASIVE TEST CHECKS FOR SERIOUS HEART DEFECTS.

DR. VANESSA GOMEZ/PEDIATRIC HOSPITALIST

RUNS:

3:59 We put an oxygen saturation probe on one of their fingers on their right hand

and then another oxygen sat probe on one of their feet and we just measure their

oxygen levels. If there's a discrepancy or it's too low, then that prompts us to do further

investigation of the heart.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Heart malformations are the most common kind of birth defect, affecting an estimated

one out of 100 births worldwide. In 25% of cases, the defects are life-threatening. But

the diagnosis may be missed, because in the first few days of life nothing may look or

sound wrong.

DR. VANESSA GOMEZ/PEDIATRIC HOSPITALIST

RUNS:

3:06: The signs of a critical congenital heart defect vary tremendously. They vary from

a patient being very sick and being cyanotic or blue, to a patient that looks fine and is

feeding okay.

SCREENING COSTS ABOUT A DOLLAR PER BABY AND TAKES ONLY SECONDS

TO PERFORM.

2-SHOT CAROL, AMY DEMO

RUNS:

:20 We like the infant to stay with the mothers at all times, so we take the equipment

into the room.

USING A BAND-AID LIKE WRAP WITH A LIGHT SENSOR INSIDE, TECHNICIANS

LOOK FOR OXYGEN LEVELS BELOW 90% OR A DISCREPANCY OF GREATER

THAN 3% BETWEEN HAND AND FOOT. THESE RAISE A RED FLAG.

CAROL LAWRENCE/PROGRAM DIRECTOR

RUNS:

4:10 This test has a strong ability to detect infants that have the defect.

MOST STATES REQUIRE A PULSE OXIMETRY TEST BEFORE BABIES GO HOME.

FLORIDA DOES NOT. BUT LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM HAS MADE IT A

SYSTEM-WIDE POLICY.

CAROL LAWRENCE/PROGRAM DIRECTOR

RUNS:

5:08 The sooner that we identify an infant has a defect, the more appropriate treatment

that can be instituted and the better outcome for the infant.

FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...
