FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

The pipeline of tropical moisture that's produced a couple cloudy, rainy days continues to dump moisture into Southwest Florida today, but we are tracking a couple improvements from yesterday's gloomy forecast.

First, the rain won't be as widespread, and second, temperatures will be warmer.

Rain will still be possible at any time and any place today, but the overall coverage of rain won't be as widespread as what we saw yesterday. Our rain chance today will be near 60%, so chances are good you'll encounter some passing showers at some point during the day.

With respect to temperatures, yesterday most of us didn't even warm into the 60s. Today, the cool air will start retreating to the north, and slightly warmer air will take its place. After starting this morning with temperatures in the 50s, we'll warm into the mid 60s by noon and most likely the low to mid 70s during the afternoon--about a 15 degree warm up from yesterday.

For those wanting some sunnier weather, there are improvements coming just in time for the weekend. Saturday will remain fairly cloudy, but we should manage partial sunshine from time to time. Some isolated showers will be possible tomorrow, but our rain prospects will be considerably low with the chance of rain around 30%.

Sunday's forecast looks even better with a partly cloudy sky and rain pretty much out of the forecast.

For the warm weather fans, you'll love this weekend. High temperatures will make the low to mid 80s Saturday and Sunday with overnight temperatures only cooling into the mid 60s.

The warm weather rolls along into next week, too, with highs in the mid 80s through mid week along with a mix of clouds and sunshine. Return to index of stories...

WE ARE NOW JUST SIX DAYS AWAY FROM THE START OF THE WINTER OLYMPICS HERE ON NBC2.

WE'RE ON THE ROAD TO SOCHI FOLLOWING THE BIGGEST STORIES OF THE GAME.

YOU'RE SURE TO SEE SOME AMAZING PERFORMANCES BY ATHLETES.

TODAY WE'RE TAKING A LOOK A ROBOTICS ENGINEER WHO HAS CREATED A MACHINE THAT CAN LEARN FROM MISTAKES AND GET BETTER. Return to index of stories...

ROBOTIC OLYMPICS-PKG

EVERY FOUR YEARS THE OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES ARE A SHOWCASE OF HUMAN MOVEMENT AND ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENT, WITH PERFORMANCES SO DAZZLING THEY HAVE THE ABILITY TO AMAZE AND INSPIRE.

RAFFAELLO D'ANDREA

athletes push the boundaries of human abilities, well; we want to push the boundaries in a similar way with our research.

RAFFAELLO D'ANDREA AND HIS COLLEAGUES WORK WITH MACHINES THAT MIMIC HUMAN MOVEMENT, SUCH AS THIS SMALL FLYING VEHICLE KNOWN AS A QUADROCOPTER, OR QUAD.

BUT WHAT MAKES THE QUAD SO INNOVATIVE ISN'T JUST THE WAY IT MOVES, IT'S THE MACHINE'S ABILITY TO LEARN AND IMPROVE ITS PERFORMANCE.

RAFFAELLO D'ANDREA

it's similar to what athletes do when they practice to do the same task over and over again. and by doing it they can get better over time. our machines do the same thing.

USING MATHEMATICAL MODELS TO ROUGHLY TELL THEM HOW THE QUAD SHOULD CONTROL ITSELF, D'ANDREA'S TEAM WRITES ALGORITHMS, OR A SEQUENCE OF INSTRUCTIONS THAT HELP THE QUAD FIGURE OUT HOW TO EXECUTE ITS TASK.

THE QUAD HAS CONTROL SYSTEMS THAT MEASURE ITS PROGRESS, AND PROVIDE FEEDBACK THAT HELPS THE QUAD MAKE ADJUSTMENTS WHILE IT MAKES TEST MOVEMENTS.

RAFFAELLO D'ANDREA

and over a period of time, five or six iterations, what it couldn't do at-- in the very first trial, it can do now quite well.

THE ATHLETES OF THE 2014 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES WILL SERVE AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION FOR D'ANDREA AND HIS TEAM. THEY IN TURN HOPE THEIR RESEARCH WILL HELP LAY THE GROUNDWORK FOR THE DESIGN OF MORE RESPONSIVE AND AGILE ROBOTIC DEVICES. Return to index of stories...

MOVE OVER CIGARETTES, VAPING DEVICES ARE GOING WHERE SMOKERS ARE NO LONGER WELCOME. INCLUDING STORES AND RESTAURANTS. THE CDC REPORTS MORE AMERICANS ARE PICKING UP THE HABIT.

MICKEY FERRY/RESTAURATEUR

RUNS:

1:12 That's not considered smoking indoors, so they can get their little fix of nicotine and not have to excuse themselves.

MOST E-CIGARETTES MIMIC THE LOOK OF TRADITIONAL SMOKES - THEY ALSO CONTAIN NICOTINE ALONG WITH OTHER FLAVORS. UNLIKE TRADITIONAL SMOKES, ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES DON'T INVOLVE LIGHTING UP.

DR. SUNIL PAMMI/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

13:32 You're putting an oil-based chemical into a chamber and then there's a battery operated heating device which vaporizes the material and you inhale that into your lungs.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Nicotine still gets into the bloodstream, but mostly through soft tissue in the cheeks and not the lungs. That's leading people to believe electronic cigarettes are a safer alternative to smokes. Since they aren't regulated, there is no proof to back that belief.

DR. SUNIL PAMMI/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

16:35 I think it's really really important these devices get studied. Because we don't know if there are affects from these devices. We'll find out 10-15 years from now, after people used them for that long of a period.

JAMES DIDIO/E-CIGARETTE USER

RUNS:

:23: My mother actually actually introduced me to this about 7 months ago and I put down the pack of cigarettes.

JAMES DIDIO IS LIKE MANY PEOPLE, WHO VAPE TO WEAN OFF CIGARETTES,

ALTHOUGH E-CIGARETTES DON'T CLAIM TO BE SMOKING CESSATION DEVICES.

DR. SUNIL PAMMI/PULMONOLOGIST

RUNS:

9:48: The companies themselves haven't marketed the device for that purpose, so it's a bit questionable exactly what the intentions are.

JAMES DIDIO/E-CIGARETTE USER

RUNS:

1:49: I know what's in a cigarette and I try to say maybe this is better. 2:00: I have no scientific knowledge of the fact at all.

WHILE MANY ISSUES ARE CLOUDY- ONE THING IS CLEAR. E-CIGARETTES ARE IGNITING CONCERN. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

THE ONLY THING THAT MAKES THE SIGHT OF THIS FLAMING SUV TOLERABLE IS THE KNOWLEDGE THAT THE DRIVER, DOUGLAS AURE WAS NO LONGER INSIDE. FOR THAT, DAUGHTER RACHEL IS THANKFUL.

I feel like he would have, if they would have been there a minute later things would have been a lot different right now.

HER FATHER HIT A CABLE BARRIER ON U-S 169, NORTH OF 694. THE SPINNING TIRES ERUPTED IN FLAMES. MAPLE GROVE OFFICER JESSE MATHWIG CAN BE SEEN ON HIS DASH CAM VIDEO HEADING TOWARD THE BURNING CAR, DOORS LOCKED, AN UNCONSCIOUS MAN INSIDE, ENGINE REVVING.

THE FIRE EXTINGUISHER WASN'T ENOUGH.

BY THEN HENNEPIN COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY MATT HAGEN HAD ARRIVED TO ASSIST MATHWIG.

We were eventually successful in breaking out the glass on the driver's side of the vehicle.

OFFICER MATHWIG AND DEPUTY HAGEN PULLED AURE TO SAFETY AS THE FLAMES LEPT AROUND THEM.

He didn't give up. You can hear on the audio tape of him unsuccessfully trying to break open that window. He kept trying, kept trying until they got him out.

BY THE TIME DOUGLAS AURE WAS LOADED INTO THE AMBULANCE. THE BLAZE HAD OVERTAKEN HIS SUV.

It's amazing to me that people risk their lives to save other people's lives and that's really what they did, they saved his life. Return to index of stories...
