FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

NEAR RECORD HEAT TOMORROW

In February, our high temperatures are usually in the pleasant mid-70's each afternoon as our version of "winter" settles in. But this week we have warmer than normal weather to look forward to each day. Wind from a southerly direction will continue to push plenty of humidity over the area tonight and there will likely be a lot of fog to start the day on Tuesday. That south/southwest wind during the day on Tuesday will keep the humidity high and push the temperatures well into the 80's in the afternoon. The record high temperature for tomorrow is 87 and my forecast high is 86. As you can see, we will be 'flirting' with record temperatures on Tuesday. A few showers will fire up along the sea breeze boundary and prevailing winds will push the showers inland.

Looking forward to the rest of the week. it will continue to be warm and rather humid. Another cold front on Wednesday evening could trigger a few showers overnight and into Thursday morning. This front doesn't look set up to bring a cooler weather pattern, but another front this Sunday has a better chance to cool us off next week. Return to index of stories...

GRACIE GOLD:

from your starting position to your ve

MAKING THE DIFFICULT ELEMENTS LOOK EFFORTLESS TAKES EXCEPTIONAL ARTISTRY, ATHLETICISM AND A SOLID UNDERSTANDING OF SOME BASIC PRINCIPLES OF PHYSICS.

AND THAT BEGINS WITH AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE CENTER OF MASS: THE BALANCE POINT IN WHICH AN OBJECT'S MASS IS CONCENTRATED.

A FIGURE SKATER'S CENTER OF MASS MUST BE KEPT DIRECTLY ABOVE THE POINT OF SUPPORT TO MAINTAIN BALANCE, ADJUSTING AS POSITIONS CHANGE.

THIS BECOMES EVEN MORE CHALLENGING IN PAIRS SKATING AND ICE DANCING, WHICH REQUIRE THAT BOTH SKATERS KEEP THEIR CENTERS OF MASS OVER THE POINT OF SUPPORT THROUGH LIFTS, THROWS AND COMPLICATED POSITIONS.

SOME OLYMPIANS AND SPECTATORS MAY NEVER ACTUALLY SEE THE TOWN OF SOCHI. WARNED TO STAY AWAY AS SECURITY CONCERNS LINGER.

Behind me is the main security checkpoint. There are several of those but that's the main one. If you drive up. Passengers are taken out. The vehicle is searched from top To bottom. They open doors, trunk, engine compartment. They look inside it all. They take mirrors and look underneath the car looking for any kind of explosive device, anything that might be attached to the undercarriage of the vehicle. The people go into a separate building. You put your credentials into a scanner to make sure you are legitimate then you are sent through a metal detector you're wanded and padded down. And by the way not only does this happen when you go in. They check your credentials on the way out.

BETWEEN 5 AND 6 BILLION DOLLARS HAS BEEN SPENT TO ENSURE THE SAFETY OF THESE GAMES.

Some of the security precautions you don't even notice for instance here's a manhole cover in the middle of a grassy field it has been foamed and glued closed. Not just one but every single one sealed and glued to make sure no one can open it and hide something inside.

THE IOC PROMISES DESPITE SOME LAST MINUTE GLITCHES. THESE GAMES ARE IN GOOD HANDS.

I can assure you of a great show. The Russians put on a great show and they will put on a great show.

25,000 VOLUNTEERS HAVE BEEN TRAINED TO HELP MAKE SURE THAT HAPPENS.

STATE OF THE ART VENUES **ARE** READY. AND SO ARE THE ATHLETES WHO HAVE BEGUN TO TRAIN HERE.

I'm happy to be here to experience this venue and be in the olympic spirit again. Return to index of stories...

A RELAXING WALK WITH THE DOG BECAME AN EXERCISE IN FUTILITY FOR STEVE PETERS. SEVERE PAIN MADE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE.

STEVE PETERS/UNDERWENT LASER THERAPY

RUNS:

:22 I had arthritis in both knees, I had both knees replaced. The right knee is fine, but the left knee has been giving me problems.

FOLLOWING THREE KNEE OPERATIONS HE WAS RUNNING OUT OF OPTIONS.

STEVE PETERS/UNDERWENT LASER THERAPY

RUNS:

:22 I've been on pain medication ever since.

STEVE WASN'T WILLING TO GIVE SURGERY ANOTHER GO- BUT AGREED TO TRY A NEW LASER THERAPY.

DR. MARK FARMER/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:19: It's an additional tool that we have to be able to treat patients. Help reduce swelling, reduce pain, improve wound healing.

IT MAY LOOK FUTURISTIC, USING A SWIPE OF LASER LIGHT TO HELP HEAL AN INJURY OR AILMENT INSIDE THE BODY. BUT THIS LASER IS FDA APPROVED FOR TEMPORARY RELIEF OF MUSCLE AND JOINT PAIN AND STIFFNESS, ARTHRITIS AND MUSCLE SPASM. IT ALSO INCREASES BLOOD CIRCULATION.

DR. MARK FARMER/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

2:02 It can stimulate cells to reduce inflammation. 2:27 By reducing that swelling, we can improve the function of the muscles to do what they're supposed to do and hopefully rehab patients and get them better quicker.

WITH A DOSE OF SKEPTICISM, STEVE PREPARED FOR SEVERAL SESSIONS.

STEVE PETERS/UNDERWENT LASER THERAPY

RUNS:

2:09 And after the first treatment, I walked away pain free. The first time in eight years.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Approved as a therapy. The treatment is not a cure in itself and doesn't work on bones. What it does, is targets pain sources with a laser focus.

DR. MARK FARMER/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

5:24 What it allows us to do is give patients another choice in their treatment regimen. I'm a big believer if we don't have to do surgery on people and there are other ways to treat people, they're better off.

IT WAS THE SOLUTION STEVE WAS SEARCHING FOR.

STEVE PETERS/UNDERWENT LASER THERAPY

RUNS:

4:44 I'm able to walk further and more often. And I don't need pain mediation anymore.

AND IT'S ALL ABOUT SAFETY.

DANIELLE LEIGH REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

TALKING CARS-PKG

"Imagine a day when vehicles can talk to each other"

VIDEO RELEASED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION DESCRIBES A VISION FOR THE FUTURE.

A DAY WHEN ALL CARS CAN COMMUNICATE WITH EACH OTHER THROUGH A WIRELESS SYSTEM SIMILAR TO WIFI.

AND WARN DRIVERS ABOUT ONCOMING HAZARDS.

LIKE A CAR BARRELING THROUGH AN INTERSECTION.

OR A CRASH AHEAD.

:20-:23

"The future will be avoiding crashes."

TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS HAVE ALREADY BEEN TESTING THE TECHNOLOGY IN MICHIGAN FOR MORE THAN A YEAR, WITH 8 MAJOR AUTO MANUFACTURERS.

NOW THEY'RE WORKING TO DEVELOP STANDARDS BY 2016 THAT WOULD REQUIRE VEHICLE TO VEHICLE COMMUNICATION SYSTEMS IN NEW CARS.

12:08:05 v2v has potential help drivers avoid 70-80 percent of vehicle crashes

"The advance builds on technology we have already seen put in cars. things like lane assist and blind spot monitoring."

SO WHAT DO CUSTOMERS THINK ABOUT THE POTENTIAL FOR "TALKING CARS"

WE VISITED A TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IN MARYLAND.

WHERE CUSTOMERS WERE WAITING TO GET THEIR CURRENT CARS REPAIRED.

"Anything that is going to improve safety is something that we definitely need."

BUT BEFORE CONSUMERS, CAN TRULY BENEFIT FROM THIS NEW TOOL

AUTO MANUFACTURERS WILL HAVE TO GET A MASS OF THESE NEW TALKING CARS ON THE ROAD.

FOR NOW. THIS TECHNOLOGY ONLY ALERTS DRIVERS TO HAZARDS.

BUT TRANSPORTATION OFFICIALS SAY AUTOMATED RESPONSES BY THE VEHICLES COULD BE INCORPORATED IN THE FUTURE.

I'M IN , NOW BACK TO YOU. Return to index of stories...

WINTER WEATHER-VO IN TC MON

ANOTHER WINTER STORM IS AFFECTING A WHILE LOT OF FOLKS.

HEAVY SNOW IS FORECAST FOR TODAY AND TOMORROW FOR THE NEW YORK CITY METRO AREA, PHILADELPHIA, AND WASHINGTON, D.C.

AND WITH THAT COMES TRAVEL HEADACHES FOR THE REST OF THE COUNTRY.

CHRIS CLACKUM BRINGS US THE WARNING. Return to index of stories...

WINTER WEATHER-PKG

IT WAS A SLOW-GO.EVEN A NO-GO FOR MUCH OF THE NORTHEAST MONDAY MORNING.

SNOW FELL AT OVER AN INCH AN HOUR ALONG THE I-95 CORRIDOR FROM PHILADELPHIA TO NEW YORK.

"It's just so heavy and wet that it's compacting very quickly as it falls" 3926

SO QUICKLY.THAT HUNDREDS OF SCHOOLS AND BUSINESSES CLOSED FOR THE DAY.

.BECAUSE TRAVEL WAS SO TREACHEROUS.

"It's not very pleasant."

SUPER BOWL ORGANIZERS ARE PLEASED, THOUGH. THAT THEY DODGED ALL THIS. BY A DAY.

THE WINTER STORM HAD ITS START OVER THE WEEKEND IN THE SOUTHWEST. AND WHERE IT ALSO TURNED DEADLY.

THREE OF NINE PEOPLE IN A MINI VAN.WERE KILLED AFTER SLIDING INTO A BIG RIG. ON THE ICY RED RIVER BRIDGE BETWEEN TEXAS AND OKLAHOMA.

BUT FORECASTERS SAY. NONE OF THIS COMPARES TO WHAT'S COMING TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY.

NINE TO 12 INCHES OF SNOW'S EXPECTED IN MUCH OF THE MIDWEST, MID-ATLANTIC.THEN BACK INTO THE NORTHEAST.

"We are expecting by Wednesday. New York, another 6 to 9 just to the west. this is a foot to a foot and a half in central Pennsylvania"

THAT'S A FOOT ON TOP OF NEARLY A FOOT THAT FELL MONDAY.

"I wish it would stop snowing long enough so I could get down to Newark airport and get out of here to someplace warm and sunny."

A NICE THOUGHT.ESPECIALLY WITH A MONTH AND HALF OF WINTER TO GO.
