CHARRED AND TORN APART.THIS IS THE AFTERMATH OF A HIGH-RISE FIRE THAT RIPPED THROUGH THE SECOND FLOOR OF "LA PARC."

Sally Myers/18 years in a high rise/1:59 "it is scary because you don't know where the fire is going to go."

AFTER KNOCKING DOWN MULTIPLE WALLS -THE CITY OF NAPLES FIRE DEPARTMENT WAS ABLE TO CONTAIN IT - WITH ASSISTANCE FROM THE NORTH NAPLES FIRE DEPARTMENT.

EVEN THOUGH NO ONE WAS INJURED - THE FIRE BRINGS TO LIGHT A YEARS-OLD CONCERN FOR CHIEF STEPHEN MCINERNY - WHO SAYS HIS DEPARTMENT NEEDS MORE "MAN POWER" TO HANDLE HIGH-RISE FIRES.

Chief Stephen McInerny/9:12 "at some point you need to realize we are a unique city, unique risk properties, they need to be protected and we need available personell to get job done."

ON MONDAY - THEY GOT THE JOB DONE.

BUT THE CHIEF CLAIMS HE NEEDS MORE MANPOWER FOR THE WORST CASE SCENARIO.

Chief Stephen McInerny/8:59 "it taxes our system, taxes our fireifghters and all of the units need to be properly staffed."

GETTING MORE FIREFIGHTERS WON'T BE EASY THOUGH.

NAPLES DOESN'T HAVE A HIGH NUMBER OF HIGH-RISE FIRES.

MOST CITY COUNCIL MEMBERS DON'T BELIEVE IT'S WORTH MORE MONEY FOR MORE FIREFIGHTERS.

Mayor John Sorey/12:49 "I think if you look at the results with the few fires we had - it would appear we have the staff we need in order to do what we do."

BUT THE CHIEF SAYS THERE'S ALWAYS THAT "WHAT IF" - MEANING IF ONE STARTED AND SPREAD TO 20 PLUS FLOORS - IT WOULD BE A NIGHTMARE.

AND WITH MORE THAN 50 OF THE BUILDINGS IN JUST CITY LIMITS.HE BELIEVES IT'S A NECESSITY.

Chief Stephen McInerny/9:07 "i've been asking for it since i've been fire chief for 4/12 years."

Laverne Iaffaldono/Naples 19:03 "they build more every time you turn around and they're higher and higher and higher once a life is loss, you can never pick it up again." Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

NEAR RECORD HEAT TOMORROW

In February, our high temperatures are usually in the pleasant mid-70's each afternoon as our version of "winter" settles in. But this week we have warmer than normal weather to look forward to each day. Wind from a southerly direction will continue to push plenty of humidity over the area tonight and there will likely be a lot of fog to start the day on Tuesday. That south/southwest wind during the day on Tuesday will keep the humidity high and push the temperatures well into the 80's in the afternoon. The record high temperature for tomorrow is 87 and my forecast high is 86. As you can see, we will be 'flirting' with record temperatures on Tuesday. A few showers will fire up along the sea breeze boundary and prevailing winds will push the showers inland.

Looking forward to the rest of the week. it will continue to be warm and rather humid. Another cold front on Wednesday evening could trigger a few showers overnight and into Thursday morning. This front doesn't look set up to bring a cooler weather pattern, but another front this Sunday has a better chance to cool us off next week.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

jordan / 11:42:10 I had no motivation.

Christy Kutz/Asst. Superintendent Teaching and Learning / 08:50:21 It's not uncommon to have a child enter their freshman year of high school at 16 years old. 08:50:27

REFERED TO AS 'OVER AGE' MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS.

Christy Kutz / 08:51:16 We are actually in the process of looking at that. 08:51:18

WE DISCOVERED 171 AGING MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS IN LEE COUNTY.

THE REASON: MANY CAN'T PASS THE F-CAT READING PROFICIENCY TEST IN THIRD GRADE.

Christy / 08:48:20 Has it increased the number of retentions in third grade? Yes! 08:48:24

IN 2013, 11% OF LEE COUNTY THIRD GRADE STUDENTS FAILED THE F-CAT EXAM.

FLORIDA LAW REQUIRES THIRD GRADE STUDENTS WHO FAIL; BE RETAINED; AND THAT'S CREATING A BACKUP IN MIDDLE SCHOOL.

EDUCATORS SAY THAT ISN'T THE ONLY REASON.

Teacher / 11:27:14 What does it say to do?

THEY POINT TO LACK OF INTEREST, SOCIAL, AND FAMILY ISSUES.

THE CHALLENGE FACING LEE COUNTY IS HOW TO GET THE STUDENTS ON TO HIGH SCHOOL.

Jeff Dobbins/Principal / 9:10:03 Right now what we need to do is create those classrooms that can help remediate those skills for kids. So they want to continue their education. 09:10:11

CHARLOTTE COUNTY CREATED NOT ONLY CLASSROOMS;

Teacher #1 / 12:25:18 Okay listen up!

BUT AN ENTIRE SCHOOL FOR OVER AGE STUDENTS AT IT'S DISTRICT HEADQUARTERS.

Chantal Phillips/Director of Intervention / 12:03:21 They had fallen behind. They were at least a year sometimes even three years behind.

CHANTAL PHILLIPS HELPED CREATE PROJECT P.A.S.S.

SHORT FOR PATHWAYS TO ACHIEVE STUDENT SUCCESS.

USING TITLE ONE FUNDS SHE SAYS THE COSTS HAVE BEEN MINIMAL;COMPARED TO THE SEVERAL THOUSAND DOLLARS IT COSTS TO RETAIN STUDENTS.

Chantal Phillips/Director of Intervention / 12:02:16 They needed a program that would help them to get over their feelings of being unsuccessful 12:02:22

Dave/Shamar / 11:48:28 What were your grades like before coming here? D's, C's like barely getting by. Not really caring. 11:48:34

15-YEAR OLD 7TH GRADER SHAMAR HARVEY NOW GET'S A's AND B's.

HE CREDITS THE INDIVIDUAL ATTENTION HE GETS IN THIS CLASSROOM OF LESS THAN 20 STUDENTS.

shamar / 11:48:19 I can get everything together and I can be at Port Charlotte High by next year playing football. 11:48:24

RATHER THAN THE UNCERTAIN FUTURE HE WAS FACING.

shamar / 11:50:52 I'd probably be in jail. It's not where I want to be. 11:50:54

STUDENTS CAN REMAIN IN THE PROGRAM FOR TWO YEARS WITH NEW HOPE OF CATCHING UP WITH THEIR PEERS.

jordan Deackoff / 11:44:09 Don't give up! Try! There's always tomorrow. You may or may not think this is your worst day but you gotta keep pushing forward. 11:44:18 Return to index of stories...

TEEN MIDDLE SCHOOLERS INVESTIGATION-BUBBA

THE PASS PROGRAM IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY IS FILLED TO CAPACITY.

THERE ARE CURRENTLY 44 OVERAGE STUDENTS IN THE CLASS.

IT IS VOLUNTARY TO ANY AGING OUT OF MIDDLE SCHOOL.

DAVE YOU SAID F-CAT AS ONE OF THE REASONS THESE KIDS ARE HELD BACK.

F-CAT IS GOING AWAY THIS YEAR.SO WILL THIS STILL BE A PROLEM?

EDUCATORS TELL ME YES.

THE REASON: FCAT WILL BE REPLACED BY A SIMILAR PROGRAM THAT WILL REQUIRE STUDENTS TO PASS A TEST.

SO THEY PREDICT THE PROBLEM WILL CONTINUE.

THAT'S WHY LEE COUNTY IS SCRAMBLING TO ADDRESS THE ISSUE.
