FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Near record heat"

It was a warm start to the week with afternoon temperatures running 10° above average for this time of year. The unseasonably warm weather will remain locked in place for the next several days, with a slight cool down to follow by early next week.

After a few patchy low clouds this morning, we'll be treated to a mix of sun and clouds during the afternoon. A southeasterly breeze will continue to pump in the humidity and the warmth as daytime highs climb into the middle 80s. In fact, a few of our inland communities are on their way to the upper 80s today. The developing west coast seabreeze will keep our beaches and coastal areas a few degrees cooler. Due to the heat and extra humidity, an isolated shower or two can't be ruled out. Any rain that develops during the day will favor areas east of I-75.

Tonight, a few patchy clouds will give way to areas of fog during the pre dawn hours. It will also be another mild and muggy night as temperatures settle into the middle to upper 60s.

A front situated to our north will slowly work its way across central Florida and stall on Wednesday. This will keep an increased chance for rain in the forecast during the afternoon and through Thursday. Daytime highs will remain warm as they return into the lower to middle 80s. Clouds will stick around through Friday before the sunshine returns for the first half of the weekend. By Sunday, we'll be tracking another front making its way down the Florida peninsula. This weather system will bring scattered showers to the area on Sunday, with another cool down in the works by early next week. Return to index of stories...

SLOPESTYLE SKIING TAKES PLACE ON A DOWNHILL COURSE WITH A SERIES OF FEATURES SUCH AS RAILS AND JUMPS THAT ATHLETES MUST SKI, GRIND AND JUMP OFF TO IMPRESS THE JUDGES.

TOM WALLISCH

slopestyle being in the olympics is something i never thought possible.

IN ORDER TO PERFORM THEIR TRICKS, SKIERS MUST RELY ON A PROPERTY IN PHYSICS KNOWN AS ANGULAR MOMENTUM CREATED WHEN TORQUE, A TWISTING FORCE, IS APPLIED TO AN OBJECT. THE MORE ANGULAR MOMENTUM THEY CREATE, THE GREATER THE POTENTIAL TO SPIN.

NICK GOEPPER

your body is a key factor in how you initiate spins and how you keep spins solid in the air.

JORDAN GERTON

they're exerting torque on their skis through their boots, through their ankles, their knees, and the rest of their body.

WHEN SKIERS JUMP OR TWIST ONTO A RAIL, THEY RELY ON ANOTHER PHYSICS CONCEPT TO CONTROL THEIR MOTION - FRICTION - THE RESISTANCE CREATED BY ONE SURFACE OR OBJECT MOVING OVER ANOTHER.

JORDAN GERTON

their skis are exerting friction on the rail and vice versa

NICK GOEPPER

it's really cool though because you can use your edges of the skis to change your momentum.

BY MASTERING THE PHYSICS OF SLOPESTYLE SKIING, THESE ELITE ATHLETES HOPES TO HAVE ALL THE MOMENTUM HE NEEDS TO LAND ON THE PODIUM AT THE 2014 OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES. Return to index of stories...

DETERMINING WHETHER YOUR CHILD IS SICK ENOUGH TO NEED A DOCTOR VISIT CAN BE A CHALLENGE.

ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO A SORE THROAT.

IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER HAS TWO QUESTIONS THAT MIGHT HELP YOU FIND THE ANSWER. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

IT'S THAT TIME OF YEAR. THE COLDER WEATHER BRINGS WITH IT SORE THROATS. IN KIDS IT CAN BE A REAL PAIN IN THE NECK.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICAN

RUNS:

:33 We definitely see a lot of strep. We see a lot of just inflamed tonsils or tonsillitis, but those two are the most common reason for sore throats.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Being more serious than a run-of-the-mill sore throat, strep should be looked at by a doctor. As a general rule, answering two questions may give parents some guidance in making the call.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICAN

RUNS:

:45 Strep tends to be more along the lines of 'no coughing or congestion' just really sore throat, High fever generally above 102.

SO THE TWO QUESTIONS WOULD BE: DOES YOUR CHILD HAVE COUGH OR COLD SYMPTOMS AND HAVE THEY HAD A FEVER IN THE LAST 24 HOURS? WHILE FEVERS ARE A HALLMARK OF STREP INFECTIONS, COUGHS ARE NOT.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICAN

RUNS:

4:34 The majority of times, if you have a fever and you don't have the other cough or cold symptoms that go along with a normal infection, most of the time its going to be strep.

TO MAKE SURE THEY HAVE THE RIGHT DIAGNOSIS, PEDIATRICIANS PERFORM AN IN-OFFICE TEST.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICAN

RUNS:

1:53: We'll do a strep culture, a rapid test in the office and send out a confirmatory test just to make sure. But it is definitely important in treating strep throat with antibiotics.

STREP IS MOST COMMON IN CHILDREN BETWEEN THE AGES OF 5 AND 15. ALTHOUGH IT'S A BACTERIAL INFECTION, STEP IS CONTAGIOUS. SO PLAN ON KEEPING YOUR YOUNG ONE HOME FROM SCHOOL.

DR. DENISE DRAGO/PEDIATRICAN

RUNS:

2:44 We say 24 hours of antibiotics, then we say you should be fever-free for about a day. So most of the times that ends up being 1 or 2 days of school that they miss.

FORECAST OPEN Return to index of stories...

FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...

FACEBOOK HAS INSPIRED A HIT MOVIE… MADE ZUCKERBERG INFLUENTIAL ON THE WORLD STAGE… AND MADE A LOT OF PEOPLE RICH AFTER GOING PUBLIC TWO YEARS AGO.

Sound Christina Warren - Mashable Senior Tech Analyst 1:09-1:16
