WINTER STORM-PKG

NATS - plowing

It just won't end!

Another winter storm - the second one this week - is blasting more than two

dozen states.

It's dumping a mix of heavy snow and freezing rain on more than 160 million

Americans.

Icy, slick roads are making driving dangerous and deadly.

SOT Lt. Jerry Williams, Indiana State Police

"WE'VE HAD SITUATIONS WHERE PEOPLE HAVE THOUGHT THAT BECAUSE THEY WERE IN A

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE VEHICLE THAT THEY'RE INVINCIBLE."

Overnight, a tractor trailer crash on the Pennsylvania Turnpike turned fatal

.

Across the Midwest, an army of plows are out in full force. Snow removal

crews are working around the clock.

SOT Kati Horner Gonzales, Snow Plow Driver

"WE JUST TAKE THE SNOW FROM THE LEFT SIDE AND WE PUSH IT ALL THE WAY OVER TO

THE RIGHT."

The storm was so bad in the midwest that a Southwest jet got stuck in the

snow after landing in Kansas City. At least one engine, was half buried in a

snow bank. Passengers had to be bused to the terminal.

MOS

"I'M READY FOR IT TO END A LITTLE BIT. I FEEL LIKE IT'S BEEN A LOT."

A number of cities have declared a snow emergency and cancelled schools.

NATS - KY principal & teacher SING announcement

"SCHOOL IS CANCELLED! SCHOOL IS CANCELLED! SCHOOL IS CANCELLED! BECAUSE IT

'S COOOOOOLLLLLD."

This brutal winter is also having a huge economic impact.

There's a salt shortage in the Midwest.

SOT Todd Dennis, Rock Bottom Stone Supply

"IT'S VERY DIFFICULT GETTING SALT RIGHT NOW, WHETHER IT'S BAGGED SALT OR

BULK SALT."

If you can get salt, you're paying a lot more.

SOT Michael Forystek, Michigan Contractor

"JUST YESTERDAY THE PRICE DOUBLED ACTUALLY."

In the Northeast, local communities are running out of snow removal money.

SOT Rich Schaffer, Babylon, NY town supervisor

"WE'RE ALREADY $66,000 OVER BUDGET BECAUSE OF THE STORMS THIS YEAR." Return to index of stories...

LOW SALT SUPPLIES-VO

TAHMAN BRADLEY REPORTING.

AS THE SNOW PILES GROW, THE MOUNDS OF SALT GET SMALLER.

AHEAD OF THE COLDEST PART OF THE SEASON.

TODAY IT'S TRIPLE THE PRICE. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing rain chances"

It certainly was a hot one yesterday as our afternoon high climbed to 88° in Fort Myers. This broke our record high of 87° at Page Field, which was set back in 1997. Over the next few days, temperatures won't be quite as warm as rain prospects increase. We'll finally track some cooler air set to arrive early next week with the passage of a cold front.

Daytime highs will max out in the lower half of the 80s today with increasing clouds during the afternoon. As a front works its way across central Florida and stalls, a few showers will be possible during the afternoon, especially along and east of I-75 as steering winds remain from the south/southwest.

Tonight, expect mostly cloudy skies and temperatures in the middle 60s. Rain chances will continue to run near 30% with a few widely scattered showers during the evening and overnight period.

Clouds will stick around through Thursday and Friday along with a slight rain chance, before more sunshine breaks out for the first half of the weekend. Temperatures will run several degrees above average for this time of year as highs return to the 80s for Saturday. A stronger cold front will approach the area on Sunday bringing scattered showers to Southwest Florida. In the wake of this front, a cooler airmass will move in with highs in the middle 70s along with lower humidity. Return to index of stories...

LENO FAREWELL-2 SHOT

THIS IS JAY LENO'S FINAL WEEK AS HOST OF "THE TONIGHT SHOW".

HE SAT DOWN WITH MARK BARGER TO TALK ABOUT HIS FALSE START EXIT 5 YEARS AGO,

AND SEEING THE SHOW MOVE BACK TO NEW YORK. Return to index of stories...

LENO FAREWELL-PKG

"Thank you everybody, thank you for watching!"

JAY LENO SAID HIS FIRST "TONIGHT SHOW" GOODBYE NEARLY FIVE YEARS AGO.

"You went through a farewell a few years ago. You had all the staff out with you as you said goodbye. Granted, that was emotional, but how do you think that's going to compare, your last night, doing it this time around?

"Well, I think this will be a little more muted. We did a last night once before. You can rerun that one. Yeah, we can rerun that one. It'll be emotional I think, but it'll be different."

"Now, not only is Jay Leno's time as host of the Tonight Show coming to an end, but so is the show's nearly 42 years in what Johnny Carson used to call "beautiful downtown Burbank."

"Yeah, it's sad, because it really was a part of sort of the Burbank landscape."

LATER THIS MONTH, THE TONIGHT SHOW WILL RETURN TO THE PLACE IT BEGAN IN THE 1950'S. NEW YORK CITY.

"I was in New York as a young comic in the early 70s when the Tonight Show moved to Los Angeles, and it seemed like the most exciting thing in the world, because it had always been in New York. So now, to see it go back to New York, I think it'll bring a renewed excitement."

THE TRANSITION TO FALLON HAS GIVEN LENO PLENTY OF COMEDY AMMO.

"Hey Jay, what are you doing?"

BUT HE ASSURES HE'S READY TO HAND OVER THE REINS.

"I did it for 20 years and it was great. 22 years. And it was a lot of fun, but you get older and there's nothing worse than an older guy trying to act hip. Hey kids! What do you think of.stop, stop!!! "

LENO MAY NO LONGER BE THE YOUNG GUN HE WAS WHEN HE TOOK OVER "TONIGHT" IN 1992.

"We'll try it out and see how it goes."

BUT HE SAYS FAREWELL THIS WEEK AS LATE NIGHT'S TOP GUN.
