FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

RAIN CHANCES CONTINUE

It was a somewhat cloudy and warm day across the area Wednesday, with highs in the low to mid 80s. Expect the clouds to continue this evening, with temps holding in the 70s. Areas of fog may develop later tonight, with lows holding in the upper 60s.

Our frontal system stays near the region Thursday. This will again result in plenty of cloud cover and a chance for scattered showers across the area. Thursday will also be muggy, with highs climbing into the low 80s.

The mostly cloudy skies remain in place for Friday, with a lesser chance of a rain shower. Highs to close the work week will hold in the low 80s.

We start the weekend with some sunshine, then scattered showers will likely develop late in the day. Saturday will again be muggy, with highs staying in the low 80s.

The frontal boundary finally moves through the area Sunday. This will end the rain chance and bring cooler conditions. Highs on Sunday will be in the upper 70s.

We start next week on a quiet and sunny note. Monday will feature plenty of sunshine with comfortable highs in the upper 70s.

Most of next week again looks fairly quiet, with temps slowly warming into the low 80s by midweek. Return to index of stories...

IT SEEMS LIKE A SIMPLE QUESTION, BUT THERE'S ACTUALLY SOME COMPLICATED SCIENCE BEHIND IT.

TODAY WE LOOK AT THE SCIENCE OF ICE. Return to index of stories...

SCIENCE OF ICE-PKG

For hundreds of Winter Olympic athletes the competition heats up on a cold, hard place: the ice.

BRITTANY BOWE

ONE THING THAT I LOVE ABOUT ICE SKATING IS THE ICE IS THE SAME FOR EVERYBODY. IT'S A LEVEL PLAYING FIELD AND THE BEST IS GONNA WIN.

It's the unique surface of ice that makes the slide-and-glide of winter sports possible.

KEN GOLDEN

AS WATER APPROACHES THE FREEZING POINT, THE WATER MOLECULES WILL /SLOW DOWN / THEY'RE NOT BOUNCING AROUND AS MUCH, BECAUSE THERE'S NOT AS MUCH THERMAL ENERGY IN THE SYSTEM.

As the molecules slow down and the hydrogen bonds begin to hold, they form into a rigid hexagonal, or 6-sided, structure called a crystal lattice.

As ice thickens, the bonds within the structure form in all directions, locking in place and making the ice hard.

Surface molecules, however, can't form rigid bonds above them and are in a loose, quasi-liquid state, also called pre-melt.

This layer acts like a lubricant that allows almost friction-less movement over ice.

GRACIE GOLD

I'M NOT SUPER PICKY ABOUT MY ICE WHEN IT COMES TO EXACT TEMPERATURE AND FEEL, BUT SOFT AND CLEAN IS MY FAVORITE.

For these Olympic athletes, being the best includes conquering the slippery surface of ice. Return to index of stories...

THIS -- AS NEW DETAILS ARE EMERGING ABOUT HIS DEATH -- THE RESULT OF AN APPARENT HEROIN OVERDOSE. A LAW ENFORCEMENT SOURCE SAYS PRELIMINARY RESULTS SHOW THE HEROIN FOUND IN HOFFMAN'S APARTMENT WAS NOT LACED WITH THE STRONG PAIN KILLER, FENTANYL.

O'DONNELL REPORTEDLY TOLD HOFFMAN TO MOVE INTO ANOTHER APARTMENT IN THE CITY, NOT WITH THEIR CHILDREN, WHEN SHE DISCOVERED HE WAS ABUSING DRUGS -- AN ON-GOING BATTLE HE RECENTLY SHARED WITH MAGAZINE WRITER, JOHN ARUNDEL.

"He took off his hat and he said, 'I'm a heroin addict.'"

"He seemed like he was having one of those 'coming to God' moments - where it just struck him as, 'this is the revelatory moment.'"

RIE AIHARA/SURGICAL ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

10:54 I think we're getting more and more away from lymph nodes- which really creates a lot of side effects, a lot of complications with lymphedema.

IT WAS NOT UNCOMMON FOR WOMEN TO FIND THEMSELVES BATTLING LYMPHEDEMA- A LIFE-LONG SWELLING THAT OCCURS WHEN FEWER LYMPH NODES ARE AVAILABLE TO DISTRIBUTE LYMPHATIC FLUID. MANY ALSO REQUIRED POST-OP THERAPIES TO ALLEVIATE SEVERE PAIN AND REDUCED RANGE OF MOTION.

PAT CURR/PHYSICAL THERAPIST

RUNS:

:09 There's a lot of scaring involved and limited range of motion in usually the shoulder and sometimes the neck and thoracic region. A lot of times they cannot reach into cabinets or do their hair. Sometimes they actually need someone to help them with showering.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Comprehensive studies were done to find out if lymph node removal was necessary to treat invasive breast cancer. The conclusion was 'no' Years ago surgeons removed 20 to 30 lymph nodes from armpit- now it's believed that less is more.

RIE AIHARA/SURGICAL ONCOLOGIST

RUNS:

13:01 We used to, if there were cancer cells regardless of how big the deposits were, we used to remove all the lymph nodes. 13:25: But with this new data- a group of women who had these lymph nodes that were positive who went on to axillary node dissection vs. those that didn't and the conclusion was there really were no difference. It just added risk.

C-V-S IS GIVING UP TOBACCO.

THE COMPANY HAS SET AN OCTOBER FIRST DEADLINE TO STOP SELLING CIGARETTES AND OTHER TOBACCO PRODUCTS AT ITS 76-HUNDRED STORES NATIONWIDE.

THE MOVE COMES AS THE PHARMACY GIANT POSITIONS ITSELF AS A MAJOR PLAYER IN THE HEALTH CARE INDUSTRY.

C-V-S SAYS. TOBACCO SHOULD NOT BE SOLD WHERE PHARMACISTS AND NURSE PRACTITIONERS WORK EVERY DAY TO HELP PATIENTS GET WELL.

"They are working with our patients and our customers who have chronic conditions like high blood pressure and high cholesterol and diabetes. And we know that smoking is extremely antithetical to helping people with their health care needs."

SMOKING IS THE LEADING CAUSE OF PREMATURE DISEASE AND DEATH IN THE UNITED STATES. IT IS LINKED TO NEARLY A HALF MILLION DEATHS EACH YEAR.

"It costs the health care system over $289 billion and also lost productivity costs."

C-V-S EXPECTS TO LOSE 2-BILLION DOLLARS A YEAR BECAUSE OF LOST CIGARETTE SALES.

BUT THE COMPANY GAINED IMMEDIATE SUPPORT FROM PUBLIC HEALTH ORGANIZATIONS. IN A STATEMENT, PRESIDENT OBAMA SAID THE MOVE BY C-V-S WILL HAVE A "PROFOUNDLY POSITIVE IMPACT ON THE HEALTH OF OUR COUNTRY."
