FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

CLOUDY AND WARM WITH A SHOWER

We start the morning with patchy dense fog. Some of that fog is likely to hang on through the mid-morning hours, especially near the coastline. After the fog, it's going to be another rather cloudy day. A cold front was approaching Southwest Florida yesterday, and is now basically stuck just to our north as a stalled front. That is the system that led us to plenty of clouds and a few showers yesterday. We can expect another round of clouds today along with a few passing showers. Winds will be from the northeast around 5-10 mph. Highs today will reach into the lower 80s. Through the night, we'll continue with mainly cloudy skies and temperatures will drop into the lower 60s for Friday morning. Friday will still be mostly cloudy, but the rain chance is be very slim. Highs will again reach into the lower 80s.

As you plan for the weekend, that same cold front that we have been talking about will finally push through Southwest Florida. It will bring some scattered showers late Saturday through early Sunday. Highs on Saturday will be in the lower 80s with plenty of humidity. Then on Sunday, we'll be just slightly cooler with highs in the lowers 70s with some warmer spots reaching into the lower 80s. Sunshine returns by Monday with highs still in the upper 70s. Return to index of stories...

WOMEN STROKE GUIDELINES-PKG

44 YEAR OLD JENNIFER COOK IS HOSPITALIZED AT U-H CASE MEDICAL CENTER IN CLEVELAND AFTER HAVING A STROKE EARLIER THIS WEEK.

"My left arm went numb and I started slurring my speech."

HER RISK FOR STROKE ROSE 20 YEARS AGO -- WHEN SHE WAS FIRST DIAGNOSED WITH HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE.

"Being aware of your blood pressure is really important."

DR. CHERYL BUSHNELL OF WAKE FOREST BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER IS THE AUTHOR OF THE FIRST EVER SET OF GUIDELINES FOR PREVENTING STROKES IN WOMEN.

SHE SAYS GETTING CONTROL OF HYPERTENSION IS KEY FOR EVERYONE.

SOME RISK FACTORS ARE SPECIFIC TO WOMEN -- LIKE SEVERE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE DURING PREGNANCY AND GESTATIONAL DIABETES.

BIRTH CONTROL PILLS CAN ALSO RAISE THE RISK -- SLIGHTLY -- AS CAN MIGRAINE HEADACHES ACCOMPANIED BY A VISUAL DISTURBANCE CALLED AN AURA. THOSE ARE FOUR TIMES MORE COMMON IN WOMEN THAN IN MEN.

"For women with migraines with aura, don't smoke, because the combination is likely to increase the risk."

JENNIFER COOK RECENTLY FOUND OUT SHE HAS ANOTHER RISK FACTOR -- TYPE II DIABETES.

THAT -- ALONG WITH HER HISTORY OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE -- INCLUDING DURING PREGNANCY -- WILL BE THE FOCUS OF DISCUSSIONS WITH HER DOCTORS MOVING FORWARD.

"Controlling the diabetes and the blood pressure. diet change of course. exercise. pretty much a lifestyle change."

DOCTORS SAY MAKING THOSE CHANGES AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE IN A WOMAN'S LIFE IS IMPORTANT. AS WOMEN TEND TO LIVE LONGER THAN MEN. AND THEREFORE HAVE A HIGHER LIFETIME RISK FOR STROKE.

The concern is: keeping the remaining arrivals safe too.

Airlines sending international flights into Russia have been told by US

security officials militants may try to smuggle explosives on board, inside

toothpaste containers.

SOT MCCAUL:

"I BELIEVE IT'S VERY SPECIFIC AND CREDIBLE INFORMATION"

A security 'ring of steel' has been built around these Olympics venues.

And for good reason.

In December suicide bombers killed 34 people, north east of Sochi in

Volgograd.

Militants have been fighting a long running insurgency in the Caucuses

region and are threatening more attacks during the games.

SOT OLSEN:

"THERE ARE A NUMBER OF SPECIFIC THREATS WITH VARYING DEGREES OF CREDIBILITY

THAT WE'RE TRACKING."

There are already restrictions on carrying liquids and creams on flights.

There's a long history now of airline bomb plots, with ever-changing tactics

WHEN IT COMES TO OSTEOPOROSIS, Many women ARE unaware THE risk of bone-thinning rises after menopause.

IT COULD TAKE A BROKEN BONE OR CURVED SPINE BEFORE THEY REALIZE SOMETHING IS WRONG.

AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN OUR HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

As the population ages, experts expect the number of women with bone-thinning osteoporosis to surge. THE MOST VULNERABLE TIME FOR WOMEN IS AFTER MENOPAUSE.

DR. FLETCHER REYNOLDS/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

9:14 We usually recommend right around the time of menopause, perhaps about 50 years old, that women get a baseline bone density. If it's fine at that time then women should probably repeat it in about two years and make sure if they're not going to be on any hormone replacement, that they're not having a rapid decline in their bone density.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Osteoporosis can go under the radar for years. People don't feel their bones weakening, but may feel the affects- or notice what it's done to their body.

DR. FLETCHER REYNOLDS/ORTHOPEDIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:52: There's no pain associated with osteoporosis unless there's a fracture. The classic example of osteoporosis is kind of the 'humpback' elderly women use to get. Those are from compression fractures from the spine that cause the spine to curve.

WHILE HORMONES IMPACT THE BODY'S ABILITY TO ABSORB CALCIUM, THERE ARE OTHER RISK FACTORS. INCLUDING rheumatoid arthritis, malabsorption disorders, LIKE celiac or Crohn's disease AND CERTAIN MEDICATIONS. THAT SAID, SOME PEOPLE JUST DON'T GET IT.

STAR COLE/WATCHES HER BONE HEALTH

RUNS:

:42: Well I think it's because how active I am at the gym.

AT 75 YEARS OLD, STAR COLE'S BONES ARE STILL GOING STRONG. SHE PRACTICES WHAT EXPERTS SAY IS A TOP FORM OF PREVENTION: EXERCISE.

STAR COLE/WATCHES HER BONE HEALTH

RUNS:

:42 I come six days a week, I do Zumba four days a week, I swim for two. So I do a variety of things- I do it for my bones got to keep them strong.

THE BASICS OF OSTEOPOROSIS, ARE TO MONITOR BONE DENSITY, BE AWARE OF RISK FACTORS AND 'EXERCISE' PREVENTIVE MEASURES- TO KEEP YOU IN THE BEST BONE HEALTH. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIE Return to index of stories...

Return to index of stories...

snow conditions are huge. you know, some races you'll have really icy conditions, some races are soft.

THE SCIENCE OF SNOW-- HOW IT'S FORMED AND HOW IT REACTS-- HAS BEEN STUDIED BY SCIENTISTS FOR CENTURIES AND CONTINUES TO THIS DAY.

SARAH KONRAD

snow is the crystalized form, the solid form of water, but it forms in the atmosphere so that it is able to take on a unique crystal structure.

SNOW IS A FORM OF PRECIPITATION THAT BEGINS AS TINY LIQUID WATER DROPLETS IN THE CLOUDS.

SARAH KONRAD

as they accrete and freeze, they'll grow outwards in that pattern.

SNOWFLAKES COME IN MANY DIFFERENT SHAPES AND SIZES.

CORT ANASTASIO

that kind of stereotypical snowflake that we're used to, those beautiful six-fold symmetric crystals, those are called dendrites.

THE SIZE AND SHAPE OF SNOWFLAKES IS DETERMINED BY TWO IMPORTANT VARIABLES-- HUMIDITY AND TEMPERATURE.

CORT ANASTASIO

dendrites form under conditions where you have a lot of water vapor. if you have less water vapor, you get much simpler shapes, small plates, small columns.

THOUGH TINY, SOFT AND DELICATE, SNOW BECOMES THE ULTIMATE PLAYING SURFACE UPON WHICH OLYMPIC DREAMS ARE MADE. Return to index of stories...
