Jeff Davenport/1:33:18 "it looked like she was making a residence there with her child - you could see some of the child's toys and things like that there."

AS NBC 2'S LUCAS SEILER FOUND OUT -- THE BIRDS REALLY ARE DRUNK.

NAT birds

"These berries tend to get these robins a little… tipsy!"

STEPHEN WARDEN OF PORT CHARLOTTE COULDN'T BELIEVE HIS EYES THURSDAY MORNING WHEN HE LOOKED OUTSIDE.

"There were hundreds of them." -

HUNDREDS OF RED ROBINS --

HE'S NEVER SEEN THAT MANY.

"The robins run into the pool cage, run into each other, just fall out of the sky."

WE FOUND OUT IT'S BECAUSE OF THESE LITTLE RED BERRIES -- CALLED BRAZILIAN PEPPERS

INSIDE IS FERMENTED JUICE GETTING THESE BIRDS TIPSY - AND VETERANARIANS TELL US IT'S ACTUALLY EXTREMELY HARMFUL TO WILDLIFE.

"It causes them to get a little bit drunk… it interferes with their neurological processes… eat them gorge themselves on them or they get a little drunk and they fly into things."

DR. ROBIN JENKINS AT PEACE RIVER WILDLIFE CENTER IN PUNTA GORDA SAYS WHEN THESE BERRIES ARE LEFT ON TREES FOR A LONG PERIOD OF TIME OR IF THEY'RE ON THE GROUND, THE JUICE INSIDE THEM FERMENTS.

SHE TELLS US THE ALCOHOL IS WHAT ATTRACTS THE BIRDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE MIGRATING LIKE THEY ARE RIGHT NOW.

"They fly into buildings, they fly into cars and they end of at out wildlife center with injuries."

NOW, THERE'S A PUSH IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA TO GET RID OF THEM - THESE BERRIES ARE ILLEGAL TO SELL IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY.

A FEW FLORIDA COUNTIES HAVE EVEN HAD A MASSIVE ERADICATION PLAN TO WEED THEM OUT - THAT IS, IF YOU'RE SUCCESSFUL IN KILLING THEM OFF…

"They're very hard to get rid of… you can cut them down, cut them back and they just keep growing back."

WATER RELEASES UPDATE-trxOC, VO

SOUTHWEST FLORIDA ENVIRONMENTALISTS ARE ASKING FOR MORE FRESH WATER RELEASES.

DURING THE DRY MONTHS,

THE ARMY CORPS OF ENGINEERS CUT OFF MOST OF THE WATER FLOW TO CALOOSAHATCHEE RIVER.

THEY KEEP A SMALL AND STEADY FLOW WHICH ALLOWS SALINITY LEVELS TO SLOWLY INCREASE.

OUR ESTUARY DEPENDS ON A DELICATE BALANCE OF SALT AND FRESH WATER.

THE SALT INCREASE THREATENS THE ESTUARY, KILLS OFF RIVER GRASSES, AND LEAVES ANIMALS FIGHTING FOR FOOD.

SOME GROUPS SAY - SOUTHWEST FLORIDA DESERVES A MORE PERMANENT FIX TO THIS ONGOING WATER QUALITY FIGHT. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

MORE CLOUDS FOR FRIDAY

After the fog burned off Thursday morning, much of the day featured sun & clouds, with highs in the low 80s. This evening will again feature some cloud cover, the chance of an isolated rain shower, and numbers falling into the 70s. Fog may develop in a patchy fashion with mild lows in the mid 60s.

The frontal boundary responsible for the clouds will linger across the region for Friday. This will again result in partly sunny skies and the chance for a few widely scattered showers. Friday will also be muggy with highs in the low 80s.

We start the weekend Saturday with pleasant conditions. Expect partly cloudy skies Saturday, with highs in the low 80s. Clouds increase late as the frontal system finally pushes into the region. Scattered showers will likely develop Saturday Night with the front.

AM rain showers will be possible Sunday, before clearing skies and cooler weather arrives. Highs on Sunday will only push into the upper 70s, with lower humidity values.

The start of next week looks comfortable and dry. Monday will feature plenty of sun, with highs pushing into the low upper 70s. We will start a warming trend Tuesday, with temps back in the low 80s midweek.

Our next weather system arrives late Wednesday into Thursday, bringing another chance of scattered showers mid to late week.
