IF YOU LIVE IN LEHIGH ACRES AND WANT FIRE AND AMBULANCE SERVICE TO CONTINUE -- YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PAY MORE MONEY.

PROPERTY OWNERS ARE LEARNING ABOUT THE CRISIS TONIGHT.

IN ABOUT 30 MINUTES, THE FIRE DISTRICT WILL ANNOUNCE THAT THEY'RE BROKE AND THEY NEED TO RAISE TAXES.

NBC2'S GEORGE SOLIS IS LIVE AT STATION 104 IN LEHIGH -- GEORGE, THIS COULD BE A BIG ISSUE. Return to index of stories...

TONIGHT IS ONE OF TWO MEETINGS THAT WILL AS MANY HAVE DESCRIBED IT EITHER SET THE STAGE FOR THE DEPARTMENT'S SALVATION OR ITS EVENTUAL DEMISE. Return to index of stories...

LEHIGH FIRE MEETING-PKG

IT'S DO OR DIE TIME FOR THE LEHIGH ACRES FIRE AND RESCUE DISTRICT.

FIRE CHIEF JOHN WAYNE SAYS FINANCIALLY THE DEPARTMENT HAS REACHED CRITICAL MASS.

"It just an accident waiting to happen and its definitely not the position that we want to put ourselves in or the public in."John Wayne, Leigh Acres Fire Chief

A PUBLIC THAT EXPECTS A HIGH LEVEL OF SERVICE

"The response is very good because you see them coming in and out." Carmen Rodriquez

IT CURRENTLY TAKES 14.5 MILLION TO OPERATE FIRE AND AMBULANCE SERVICE A YEAR.

THE DISTRICT IS FUNDED THROUGH PROPERTY TAXES WHICH ONLY BRINGS IN 7.4 MILLION.

BUT WAYNE SAYS WITH FALLING TAX REVENUE AND CALLS FOR SERVICE ON THE RISE THE DEPARTMENT IS LOOKING FOR A SOLUTION TO A DIRE SITUATION.

"We're in a worse position now than we were before so logic would dictate that if we didn't get these funding opportunities we'll have to lay off more personnel." Wayne

SOME OPPORTUNITIES THAT HAVE SAVED JOBS INCLUDE FEDERAL GRANTS.

BUT WITH THE UNCERTAINTY OF THESE FUNDS THE DISTRICT IS LOOKING FOR A MORE RELIABLE SOURCE OF INCOME IN THE FORM OF AN ASSESSMENT FEE.

THE IDEA IS TO REPLACE THE OLD FUNDING SOURCE WITH THIS NEW FEE.

"We're not looking to charge one identity more than another for the amount of service they receive we want equal charges among everyone." Fire Board Chairman Larry Becker.

THE FIRE BOARD HIRED A CONSULTING FIRM OUT OF TALLAHASSEE TO DRAW UP THE NUMBERS TO SHOW THE ASSESSMENT WOULD BREAK OUT.

BUT THE DECISION WILL ULTIMATELY BE LEFT TO THE VOTERS.

SOME WHO SAY THEY'LL SUPPORT IT, IF THE PRICE IS RIGHT

"I wouldn't think its fair if I would have to pay 200 and that one is paying 100"

THE CHIEF WARNS EVEN IF THE ASSESSMENT FAILS, PROPERTY OWNERS WILL STILL NEED TO BE PREPARED ONE WAY OR ANOTHER.

"So they're either going to paying their insurance company more for their insurance at the end of the year because their fire rating is going to increase or they're going to pay the fire department a fee to continue the service and then get something for their money instead of just a bill like they got the previous year." Wayne Return to index of stories...

LEHIGH FIRE MEETING-REM LIVE

THE FIRE CHIEF SAYS IF THE ASSESSMENT FAILS IT MEANS ABOUT 60 LAYOFFS AND THE END OF AMBULANCE SERVICE.

TONIGHT RESIDENTS WILL HEAR THE FIRST DRAFT OF THE NUMBERS.

LATER THIS MONTH THE FIRE BOARD WILL VOTE TO DECIDE IF IT GOES TO VOTERS.

THE RACE IS ON IN THE SEARCH FOR OIL IN SOUTHWEST FLORIDA.

2 COMPANIES NOW HAVE PENDING EXPLORATION APPLICATIONS WITH THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION.

All sorts of very important wildlife species to our area are utilizing those very same areas.

BURNETT OIL INCorporated OUT OF TEXAS IS THE MOST RECENT TO APPLY.

THEY FILED PAPERS last month.

AND IN THEM WE FOUND OUT THEY WANT TO SEARCH 366 SQUARE MILES.

THAT'S MORE THAN 234 THOUSAND ACRES INCLUDING THE NATIONAL PANTHER WILDLIFE REFUGE AND BIG CYPRESS NATIONAL PRESERVE.

Jennifer

03:20-:27

I feel like absolutely more should be done to notify the public and what we're seeing is the opposite of that.

THE METHOD BURNETT WANTS TO USE IS CALLED 3-D GEOPHYSICAL SEISMIC SURVEYING.

IT REQUIRES EXPLOSIVES AND HEAVY MACHINERY.

OPPONENTS SAY THE LAND CAN'T HANDLE THAT.

matt schwartz

02:17-:26

These are absolutely some of the most important lands not only in Florida, but most of the most important lands in the country in terms of biodiversity.

ANOTHER GROUP TOCALLA INCORPORATED ALREADY HAS THE GREEN LIGHT.

AND NOW THE S-E-C DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR WANTS PEOPLE TO KNOW A LITTLE BIT ABOUT HIS LIFE OFF THE FIELD.

MICHAEL SAM SAYS HE'S COMING FORWARD NOW SO THAT HE CAN TELL HIS OWN STORY.

IT WAS AT THE SENIOR BOWL A COUPLE WEEKS AGO THAT SAM NOTICED MANY PEOPLE SEEMED TO ALREADY KNOW ABOUT HIS SEXUAL ORIENTATION.

GOING PUBLIC WITH IT WAS THE NEXT STEP AFTER TELLING HIS TEAM LAST SEASON.

"I came out to my teammates, they took it great. They rallied around me, they supported me. I couldn't ask for better teammates."

ON ESPN RADIO'S MIKE AND MIKE SHOW, MISSOURI COACH GARY PINKEL OFFERED HIS SUPPORT.

"I told him this was going to be big, which is an understatement, but he's a great young man and I'm very, very proud of him."

REACTION TO SAM'S ANNOUNCEMENT HAS BEEN WIDE-RANGING.

HIS COUSIN JOVONNE SAM CALLED MICHAEL "A BLESSING TO OUR FAMILY."

THE BIG QUESTION IS WHETHER AN NFL LOCKER ROOM WILL BE AS WELCOMING.

"Let's just hope come May, he's between the 3rd and the 5th round in the NFL draft and that some team takes him because of his football ability and the community embraces him because he's a good football player and hopefully a trendsetter for many people across the country."

AN NFL SPOKESMAN SAID "WE LOOK FORWARD TO WELCOMING AND SUPPORTING MICHAEL SAM IN 2014".

HE KNOWS HE'LL LIKELY FACE TAUNTS AND SLURS FROM OPPOSING FANS AND PLAYERS. SAM SAYS HE'S NOT WORRIED ABOUT THAT.

"Hopefully players will see that they don't judge me because I'm gay. They see, hey this person works hard, can he win us games, can he win us a championship, I can."

MICHAEL SAM IS PROJECTED TO BE A MIDDLE ROUND DRAFT PICK IN MAY.

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

NICE WEATHER AGAIN TOMORROW

Another beautiful day is on the way for Tuesday. High pressure remains in control of our weather pattern for the rest of this evening and tomorrow. Skies will be mostly clear tonight and it will be pleasantly cool this evening. Temperatures will fall to the mid/upper 50 tonight and only a few inland areas will see some patchy ground fog in the morning. Skies will be bright and sunny during the day on Tuesday with highs in the lower 80's.

We will be tracking a potentially strong cold front moving toward our area by late day Wednesday. The front is expected to bring some heavy showers or thunderstorms which could move through here with strong winds by Thursday morning. After the front blows through we should end up with another string of nice days starting Thursday and lasting through the weekend. A few chilly mornings are possible on Friday and Saturday with a potential for mid 40's on Friday morning. The daytime highs will be in the comfortable 70's after the front goes by.
