FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

"Increasing rain chances"

We were able to hold on to one more day of superb weather - lots of sun, comfortable humidity, and highs in the low 80s. The area of high pressure that has controlled our weather will begin to weaken and as a result, rain chances will be on the rise.

Throughout the afternoon, we'll see a mix of sun and clouds and daytime highs will return to the lower 80s. A few showers will be possible during the heat of the day, but with an onshore wind flow any rain that develops will get pushed east of I-75.

Late this afternoon and into the evening, as another storm system approaches from the west expect increasing clouds. Scattered showers and even a few storms will push toward the west coast of the peninsula affecting Southwest Florida through the nighttime hours.

By Thursday morning, the rain will have moved out and temperatures will start off in the 60s. Clouds will clear and a cooler and drier airmass will settle into the area. Despite mostly sunny skies during the afternoon, daytime highs will be a few degrees below average as they top out in the lower 70s. Valentine's Day will get off to a chilly start with temperatures in the middle 40s, but the afternoon will be beautiful with lots of sun and highs in the lower 70s. This will set the stage for another great weekend featuring comfortable humidity values and slight warming trend. Return to index of stories...

Our day will dawn bright and mostly sunny and temperatures won't be quite as cool. Most of us will wake to readings in the upper 50s, with a few inland and northern cool spots in the middle 50s. Ample sunshine will get the day going, however a patch or two of fog will be possible deeper inland and north of the Caloosahatchee.

BIONIC HAND-VO PLASMA

HIS STORY IS STARTING TO GRAB NATIONAL ATTENTION.

MEET STAFF SGT. JAMES SIDES, A U-S MARINE WHO IS THE ONLY PERSON IN THE WORLD TO HAVE A NEW TYPE OF BIONIC HAND.

DOREEN GENTZLER SHOWS YOU THE TECHNOLOGY SOON TO CHANGE LIVES. Return to index of stories...

BIONIC HAND-PKG

IT LOOKS LIKE HE WALKED OFF THE SET OF THE LATEST SCIENCE FICTION MOVIE.

BUT FOR U-S MARINE STAFF SARGEANT JAMES SIDES. THIS IS REAL LIFE.

"I remember being on my left side in the fetal position, with dust in my eyes and my ears ringing. I was confused and then I realized what happened."

IT WAS SPRING 20-12. WHEN SGT. SIDES WAS ON HIS SECOND DEPLOYMENT TO AFGHANISTAN. WORKING AS A BOMB TECH. PUTTING HIS LIFE ON THE LINE EACH AND EVERY DAY TO DISMANTLE UNEXPLODED I-E-D'S. UNTIL ONE MISSION JUST DIDN'T GO AS PLANNED.

"it was booby trapped. it detonated when I was on top of it."

THE EXPLOSION LEFT SGT. SIDES WITHOUT A HAND.

"there's no point in oooohhh, I lost my hand. that doesn't get you anywhere."

IT WAS THAT POSITIVE ATTITUDE, BRAVERY AND EVEN A SENSE OF HUMOR THAT MADE HIM A CANDIDATE FOR THIS. A FIRST OF IT'S KIND PROSTHETIC THAT USES SENSORS SURGICALLY IMPLANTED IN THE LIMB AS WELL AS A MOTORIZED THUMB.

"if i want to pick up something, it's intuitive and fluid, just like if i had a hand."

DR. PAUL PASQUINA OF THE UNIFORMED SERVICES UNIVERSITY OF THE HEALTH SCIENCES -- THAT'S THE MILITARY'S MEDICAL SCHOOL -- SAYS MOST OF THE NEWER PROSTHETICS USE SENSORS ON THE SURFACE OF THE LIMB. SO THEY'RE ONLY ABLE TO DETECT SOME OF THE REMAINING MUSCLES, LIMITING MOVEMENT.

"many of the more functional muscles that actually control the hand naturally are deeper. they're not close to the surface of the skin. many of the deeper muscles are the muscles you actually use for the hand manipulation."

SGT. SIDES HAS EIGHT SENSORS IMPLANTED IN HIS LIMB. THEY HELP HIM ARTICULATE HIS FINGERS, USE THAT SPECIAL MOTOR IN THE THUMB AND ROTATE HIS HAND. AND HE CAN DO IT ALL AT ONCE. Return to index of stories...
