THERE'S A PUSH IN CHARLOTTE COUNTY TO GO FORWARD WITH A PROGRAM TO DREGE THE CANALS.

WITH A COORDINATED EFFORT THAT COULD SAVE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS A YEAR.

NBC2'S LUCAS SEILER SHOWS US HOW. Return to index of stories...

CHARCO DREDGING-BNR-PKG

RIGHT NOW, THE PROCESS ISN'T IDEAL - SAY CHARLOTTE COUNTY HAS A LIST OF CANALS THEY WANT TO DREDGE…

WELL, THAT MEANS APPLYING FOR A PERMIT… NOT JUST ONE, BUT SEVERAL.

Betty Staugler, Charlotte Sea Grant Agent "In many regards, you're talking about man hours… so if you have to do a permit for each and every canal you want to dredge, that's a lot of man hours."

A LOT OF MAN HOURS… AND A LOT OF MONEY.

BY IMPLEMENTING A DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION PROGRAM, CHARLOTTE COUNTY COULD SAVE ABOUT THREE MILLION DOLLARS.

NAT wind

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS: A GENERAL PERMIT ISSUED BY THE DEP WOULD ALLOW FOR CHARLOTTE COUNTY TO DREDGE SEVERAL CANALS OR CHANNELS INSTEAD OF TAKING THE TIME AND MONEY TO LOOK AT THEM INDIVIDUALLY.

OVER 300 MILES OF CANALS WERE STUDIED IN CHARLOTTE - OFFICIALS IDENTIFIED 27 AREAS THAT COULD BENEFIT FROM NAVIGATION DREDGING - MAKING IT EASIER FOR BOATERS, LIKE JEFF GOOD.

Jeff Good, Boater "At low tides it's difficult to get out… it's very shallow especially if you have a north wind."

GOOD LIVES IN THE HARBOR HEIGHTS NEIGHBORHOOD - ONE OF THOSE 27 AREAS IDENTIFIED FOR DREDGING.

HE SAYS MOST OF THE BOATS IN HIS NEIGHBORHOOD ARE ABOUT 25 FEET AND SOMETIMES THE CANALS LEADING TO DEEPER WATER ARE HARD TO GET THROUGH.

Jeff Good, Boater "It would be nice if you could ya know safely get out of the canals in boats that size."

BEFORE MOVING FORWARD WITH DREDGING ANY OF THESE QUALIFYING WATERWAYS, THE DEP WANTS PUBLIC INPUT ABOUT ANY CONCERNS - LIKE WHERE THEY THINK THE COUNTY SHOULD START FIRST OR WHAT TYPE OF IMPACT THE DREDGING COULD HAVE ON ENVIRONMENAL RESOURCES LIKE SEA GRASS.

Betty Staugler, Charlotte Sea Grant Agent "We really want to have boaters and interested parties look at the project, understand the project and vett the project."

PUBLIC MEETINGS WILL BE HELD AT THE CHARLOTTE HARBOR EVENT CENTER IN PUNTA GORDA IN MID-MARCH.
