AM SHOWERS THEN CLOUDY, WINDY AND COOL

A cold front is pushing its way through Southwest Florida this morning. There are still just a few showers left to finish clearing the area. After these early morning showers, we'll be left with mostly cloudy skies and windy conditions. Cloud cover will be slowly decreasing through the day. Winds will be coming in from the northwest at 15-20 mph with gusts near 30 mph. Along with the clouds and the wind, the temperatures will struggle to warm to the upper 60s to near 70 degrees this afternoon, feeling cooler with the wind.

For tonight, it is going to be much cooler than what we've been used to lately in Southwest Florida. Temperatures will fall into the mid 40s with lower 40s in the inland colder spots. Sunshine returns to the forecast on Friday with highs in the lower 70s.

Through the weekend, we'll continue with plenty of sunshine and highs will warm into the mid and upper 70s.

Warmer weather is on the way for the start of next week as the sunshine continues and temperatures climb back into the lower 80s. Return to index of stories...

SOUTH BRACES FOR MORE ICE-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

THE ROADS AROUND ATLANTA COATED IN ICE WEDNESDAY. BUT A FAR CRY FROM CONDITIONS SEEN TWO WEEKS AGO.

The biggest thing is Georgians are cooperating. They are staying at home, they are avoiding getting on the roadways, and that's been a big help to everybody.

THAT'S NOT THE CASE AROUND NORTH CAROLINA WHERE ICE COATED ROADS BROUGHT TRAFFIC TO A STANDSTILL. DESPITE WARNINGS, THE STORM CAUGHT MANY BY SURPRISE.

Right about noon time, the snow started with a fury. It snowed extremely hard for the first hour. Everybody at work decided they were going to go home at that point so they all ended up on the roads at the same time.

SOME DRIVERS LEFT THEIR CARS BEHIND. SOMETHING OFFICIALS URGED THEM NOT TO DO.

We prefer to have peoplestay in their car unless they're in some sort of immediate danger but we want them to stay in their car, don't abandon their car unless there are certain elements that are requiring them to get out in very, very cold weather.

MEANWHILE, PEOPLE UP NORTH ARE GETTING READY FOR THE SNOWY MESS AS THE STORM HEADS THAT WAY.

SIX TO 8 INCHES ARE PREDICTED FOR WASHINGTON AND 6 TO 10 INCHES IN NEW YORK, WITH A COMBINATION OF SNOW, SLEET AND RAIN CONTINUING UNTIL FRIDAY MORNING.

That this is serious. We need you to be on alert. And frankly, when it does start snowing and we say stay home, this is really the one. Stay home.

I'M HOLLY FIRFER REPORTING. Return to index of stories...

Caleb Acosta

"I've gotten used to drinking my pills, drinking like 15 pills at night but the only thing that it affects is my energy."

At 15 years old, the Florida teen has undergone brain surgery for a tumor which has spread to his spine.

Cathy Franco

"No words can describe the pain that we feel watching your child go through pain and having to take medication."

But after seeing Richochet the surf dog on TV, he had one wish.

Caleb Acosta

"My aunt showed me a video of him, it really made me so happy to be like oh that's so cool I want to surf. It really inspired me."

That's when the Make-A-Wish Foundation flew him out to Del Mar Dog Beach to meet her.

NAT POP

And the smile never left his face.

Caleb Acosta

"It felt really good to be free just to be not worrying about anything having someone to be my balance."

Richochet is the only dog in the world who swims with kids with special needs and people with disabilities.

Cathy Franco

"When he's under water he doesn't feel pain, he doesn't feel pressure in his head."

Caleb Acosta

"Richochet can control the board and helped so many people"

And like the MANY of riders before him, Caleb says Richochet helped him bounce back.

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

HEALTH MATTERS-ON CAM

A WARNING TODAY FOR PARENTS AND CAREGIVERS.

MAGNETS ARE DANGEROUS FOR KIDS.

AND WE'VE LEARNED - THE NUMBER OF E-R VISITS RELATED TO CHILDREN SWALLOWING MAGNETS HAS INCREASED DRAMATICALLY IN RECENT YEARS.

AMY OSHIER REPORTS IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

ANY PARENT WILL TELL YOU, IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO GUESS WHY KIDS DO

WHAT THEY DO- AND WHY SO MANY ARE ATTRACTED TO MAGNETS. BUT ER

DOCTORS SAY IT'S SO.

DR. CARMEN GARCIA/ER PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

:42 We know that children, they're exploring. especially when they're younger. Kids are

going to go around and put things in their mouths.

OVER THE LAST DECADE MORE AND MORE U.S. CHILDREN ENDED UP IN

THE EMERGENCY ROOM AFTER SWALLOWING MAGNETS. IT CAN PRESENT A

MEDICAL CRISIS, ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY'RE INGESTED AS MULTIPLES.

DR. CARMEN GARCIA/ER PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

6:45 If they go down into the bowel, those magnets can stick together trapping the

bowel wall between them and they can cause some damage or perforation of the bowel.

IT'S NEWS TO NICOLE NALLEY. THIS MOTHER OF FIVE THOUGHT SHE'D SEEN

IT ALL.

NICOLE NALLEY/MOTHER

RUNS:

:44 Usually I'm up to date on all this but no I haven't heard of the magnets.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS;

It goes to show what you don't know can hurt you. The number of

magnet incidents seen at hospitals jumped five-fold in eight years.

Some were swallowed, others were put up the nose. The most

common age was 5.

THE REASON FOR THE INCREASE- IT MAY JUST BE THERE ARE MORE

MAGNETS AROUND US. MOM NICOLE SCOURED HER BRAIN.

NICOLE NALLEY/MOTHER

RUNS:

:58 None that I can think of- other then maybe some refrigerator magnets like the ABC's

and the numbers. 1:15 I just threw them away because they ended up more on the floor

then on the fridge.

CULPRITS INCLUDE DESK-TOYS LIKE THESE

THEY'RE ROUND AND EASY TO SWALLOW.

DR. CARMEN GARCIA/ER PEDIATRICIAN

RUNS:

7:27 Magnets particularly have become very popular as well and they're everywhere.

7:11 So certainly you need to make sure you child proof your house and think of things

you don't routinely think.

SWALLOWING A MAGNET, MERITS IMMEDIATE MEDICAL ATTENTION. YOU

SHOULDN'T STICK IT OUT, AND ASSUME IT WILL PASS NORMALLY.
