IT'S CERTAINLY NOT THE EASIEST JOB IN THE WORLD. BEING GONE FROM HOME SO MUCH.

"I've been in Russia for two and a half years now."

"I've enjoyed my job immensly. This has been the highlight of my career so far."

MERKLEY, WHO LIVES IN UTAH WHEN HE CAN. IS THE DIRECTOR OF VILLAGE MANAGEMENT FOR THE OLYMPICS.

HIS JOB?

MAKING SURE 6000 ATHLETES, COACHES, AND OFFICIALS. HAVE EVERYTHING THEY NEED. WHEN THEY'RE NOT COMPETING.

IT HELPS. THE VENUES FOR THE SOCHI GAMES. ARE CLOSE TOGETHER.

"They wanted to create the most compact winter olympic games ever. so that athletes would never need to travel more than 12 or 15 km to their event or competition or training venue."

MERKLEY ORDERED 120 BICYCLES FOR THESE GAMES. POOL TABLES, PING PONG TABLES, TV'S. SO ATHLETES COULD RELAX IN A LOUNGE-TYPE AREA INSTEAD OF THEIR ROOMS.

AND SPEAKING OF THEIR ROOMS. HE HAS TO MAKE SURE THEY'RE BIGGER.

"We think that's a huge advantage to athletes. We've seen how much gear they bring with them and how much gear they acquire once they arrive. so, having the additional space is a great luxury for them and the officials that manage them."

OF COURSE, FOOD IS A CHALLENGE. MAKING SURE THERE IS SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE.

BUT MERKLEY'S BIGGEST CHALLENGE FOR THESE SOCHI GAMES IS FAMILY.

HIS WIFE IS DUE TO GIVE BIRTH BACK HOME THIS WEEK.AND HE CAN'T BE THERE.

"thank goodness through technology today I'll be able to connect home for that moment. It'll be really special and exciting for my team who have always cared a lot about my family and me and it will be a joyful reunion when I return."

JUST LIKE THE ATHLETES HE SERVES. HIS FOCUS IS ON THESE GAMES.

THE 20-14 VEHICLE DEPENDABILITY STUDY BY J-D POWER AND ASSOCIATES SAYS THE NUMBER OF OWNER-REPORTED PROBLEMS OF THREE-YEAR-OLD CARS, TRUCKS AND S-U-V'S HAS INCREASED SIX PERCENT SINCE LAST YEAR.

WHAT'S MOST STRIKING ABOUT THAT STATISTIC -- IT BREAKS THE TREND. THIS IS THE FIRST TIME IN FIFTEEN YEARS VEHICLE OWNERS SAY THEY HAVE A MARKED INCREASE IN PROBLEMS -- BOTH DEFECTS BUT ALSO GENERAL COMPLAINTS -- ABOUT THEIR CARS.

LET'S LOOK AT THE VEHICLES FROM THE 20-11 MODEL YEAR THAT FARED THE WORST, ACCORDING TO THE STUDY:

B-M-W'S MINI BRAND HAD THE POOREST SHOWING IN THE SURVEY -- WITH DRIVERS REPORTING 185 PROBLEMS PER 100 VEHICLES.

SECOND -- FIAT CHRYSLER'S DODGE BRAND, FOLLOWED BY LAND ROVER AND HYUNDAI.

BY COMPARISON -- THOSE THAT GOT HIGHER MARKS:

LEXUS WAS RANKED THE MOST DEPENDABLE. IT HAD 68 PROBLEMS FOR EVERY 100 VEHICLES.

MERCEDES-BENZ TOOK THE SECOND SPOT, FOLLOWED BY GENERAL MOTORS' CADILLAC BRAND, HONDA'S ACURA, AND BUICK.

CUSTOMER LOYALTY IS ALSO VERY IMPORTANT TO CAR COMPANIES -- BUT THIS STUDY SHOWED THAT IF A CAR HAS THREE OR MORE PROBLEMS THEN ONLY 43-PERCENT OF US WILL LIKELY BUY FROM THE SAME COMPANY THE NEXT TIME WE NEED A CAR. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

AM SHOWERS THEN CLOUDY, WINDY AND COOL

A cold front is pushing its way through Southwest Florida this morning. There are still just a few showers left to finish clearing the area. After these early morning showers, we'll be left with mostly cloudy skies and windy conditions. Cloud cover will be slowly decreasing through the day. Winds will be coming in from the northwest at 15-20 mph with gusts near 30 mph. Along with the clouds and the wind, the temperatures will struggle to warm to the upper 60s to near 70 degrees this afternoon, feeling cooler with the wind.

For tonight, it is going to be much cooler than what we've been used to lately in Southwest Florida. Temperatures will fall into the mid 40s with lower 40s in the inland colder spots. Sunshine returns to the forecast on Friday with highs in the lower 70s.

Through the weekend, we'll continue with plenty of sunshine and highs will warm into the mid and upper 70s.

Warmer weather is on the way for the start of next week as the sunshine continues and temperatures climb back into the lower 80s. Return to index of stories...

TENDON TRANSPLANT-VO PLASMA

IT'S A RADICAL NEW SURGERY FOR FIXING ONE OF THE MOST COMMON SPORTS INJURIES - AN ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURE.

DOCTORS ARE now USING PARTS OF THE THIGH AND TO FIX THE ANKLE.

DOREEN GENTZLER REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

TENDON TRANSPLANT-PKG

"i was going up for a lay up and I felt a large pop and I thought someone had kicked me from behind."

THAT "POP" WAS THE SOUND OF RUBEN FALOLA'S ACHILLES TENDON RUPTURING.

"I sat down for a moment, tried to recuperate, tried to walk again and that wasn't happening."

THE ACHILLES TENDON IS A LARGE FIBROUS CORD THAT CONNECTS THE BACK OF THE CALF WITH THE HEEL BONE. IT'S ONE OF THE STRONGEST TENDONS IN THE BODY, BUT IT'S ALSO ONE OF THE MOST VULNERABLE TO INJURY.

"there's a portion of it that doesn't have that much blood supply, so there's a watershed area of the achilles tendon that predisposes it to rupturing."

USUALLY, FIXING IT IS SIMPLE. A ROUTINE SURGERY TO RE-CONNECT THE TORN TENDON. BUT DR. KAREN EVANS SAYS FOR 5 PERCENT OF PATIENTS, THERE'S COMPLICATIONS.

"it can happen to anyone"

AND THAT MEANS MORE SURGERY, LEAVING SOME PATIENTS UNABLE TO WALK.

BUT NOW EVANS IS USING A NEW TECHNIQUE. TAKING TISSUE FROM THE THIGH AND TRANSPLANTING IT ONTO THE BACK OF THE HEEL.

"we take it out and roll it up like a fruit roll up. makes a strong new tendon."

EVANS SAYS IT A LONG, COMPLEX SURGERY BUT AFTER SIX MONTHS OF PHYSICAL THERAPY, PATIENTS COME BACK WITH MUCH MORE FUNCTION. THEY'RE ABLE TO GET BACK TO BEING ACTIVE, PLAYING SPORTS, EVEN RUNNING.

RUBEN FALOLA UNDERWENT THE PROCEDURE AFTER HE ENDED UP WITH COMPLICATIONS.

AS A MEDICAL STUDENT, HE SAYS HE WAS FASCINATED BY THE NEW SURGERY.

"it's an awesome procedure. It was just unfortunate that I had to be the subject."

HE'S NOW BACK ON HIS FEET, TRYING TO STAY ACTIVE. HE'S EVEN GONE BACK TO THE BASKETBALL COURT A FEW TIMES. AND THE NEW PROCEDURE HAS ACTUALLY BEEN A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION.

"the whole thing has made me more interested in surgery. we'll see where it goes from here." Return to index of stories...

TENDON TRANSPLANT-OC

DOREEN GENTZLER REPORTING.

THIS IS A REALLY COMPLEX PROCEDURE. SURGERY CAN TAKE 6 TO 8 HOURS.
