COOL END TO THE WORK WEEK

After a stormy Wednesday, cooler air rushed in across Southwest Florida Friday, with highs only in the upper 60s. Skies will clear this evening and temps fall quickly into the 50s. Expect a very chilly overnight, with lows in the mid 40s in urban corridor and low 40s inland.

More cool air is expected Friday. We'll see a heavy dose of sun, but a sea breeze will develop that will hold temps in the upper 60s and low 70s. Most beach locations will only climb into the mid and upper 60s. Another cool overnight is expected, with lows in the mid 50s.

We start the weekend on a sun-filled and pleasant note, with high back in the mid 70s. A reinforcing cool front will work through the area, but it will only create a few clouds across the area. It will cold Saturday Night, with lows falling into the upper 40s.

Despite the cool front Saturday, the warmup continues into Sunday. We'll see clear skies all day, with highs in the upper 70s.

More warmth arrives to start next week, with highs back in the low 80s Monday. Temps on Tuesday will also climb into the low 80s.

A few more clouds will be possible midweek next week, with highs in the mid 80s. No major weather system is expected to impact the area over the next 7 days. Return to index of stories...

THIS WINDY WEATHER IS PUSHING MORE OF THAT UGLY RED DRIFT ALGAE ONTO LEE COUNTY BEACHES.

IT'S NOT NEARLY AS BAD AS IT WAS A MONTH AGO HERE ON FORT MYERS BEACH.

"We are having a great time!" Vedmore

SEASONAL RESIDENT DIANE VEDMORE SAYS she HAS LITTLE TO COMPLAIN ABOUT.

"Even though it's windy, there's always something to do, on the beach we're finding these gorgeous shells!" Vedmore

BUT IT'S AN ACTIVITY THAT COULD BE SHORT-LIVED.

SCIENTISTS EXPECT THE COMBINATION OF LOOMING STORMS SYSTEMS AND WINDS PUSHING TOWARD THE COASTLINE TO PUSH MORE RED DRIFT ALGAE ONTO BEACH SHORES

"I expect there to be more stranding events and the frequency of those stranding events is probably once every two weeks."

Dr. Eric Mildbrandt, SCCF Marine Lab Dir.

RESEARCHERS at THE SANIBEL-CAPTIVA CONSERVATION FOUNDATION ARE STUDYING THE GROWTH AND BELIEVE THE ALGAE IS TIED TO THE LAKE O FRESH WATER RELEASES FROM LAST SUMMER.

"It's a very patchy phenomena so most times you'll find it washed up on one beach but if you just go down the road a mile there may not be any." Milbrandt

OTHERS THAT HAVE ENCOUNTERED THE ALGAE HAVE THEIR CONCERNS.

"The last few days we did have periods where we walked and there was a lot of algae here and it smelled." Jim Handley, Wisconsin

BUT THEY HOLD THEIR HEADS UP HIGH HOPING ITS A SHORT-LIVED PROBLEM.

"It doesn't bother me either, I mean we love to walk on the beach." VEDMORE SAYS ALGAE OR NOT SHE'S COMMITTED TO MAKING THE MOST OF HER TIME ON THE BEACH

"You're going to have to have that because that's how things cycle its not a big thing nothing's going to stop me I'm retired I'm going to have good time no matter what' Vedmore Return to index of stories...
