HELLO-PLASMA

GOOD MORNING AND WELCOME TO NBC-2 NEWS TODAY ON THIS SUNDAY MORNING.

I'M STACEY DEFFENBAUGH

IT WAS A CHILLY START, BUT THE SUN IS OUT, AND ITS IS GOING TO BE A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

FOR A DETAILED FORCAST, METEOROLOGIST JASON DUNNING JOINS US IN THE FIRST ALERT WEATHER CENTER. Return to index of stories...

WEATHER-WX CENTER

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

A reinforcing shot of cool air pushed into Southwest Florida this morning, sending our morning lows down into the 40s, but some warmer weather awaits in the days ahead.

Despite the chilly start, we've got a very pleasant and mild day on the way with temperatures warming into the mid 70s by the afternoon. As a much drier air mass invades Southwest Florida behind yesterday's front, we'll keep clear and sunny skies from start to finish.

Winds will also ease up a bit compared to yesterday. The breeze will come in from the north and northwest today between 5-15 mph.

Temperatures will be a bit warmer tonight, but we'll still be on the cool side with lows dropping into the low 50s and upper 40s by early Monday morning.

As we head into the upcoming week, we've got a phenomenal forecast in store for Southwest Florida.

Sunshine will be prevalent this week, particularly Monday through Wednesday, and we won't have any rain in the forecast all the way through the end of the week.

Temperatures will be the main focus through the second half of the week as daytime highs climb all the way to the mid 80s from Wednesday into the upcoming weekend, setting up a stretch of some unseasonably warm weather across Southwest Florida. Return to index of stories...

Presidents' Day in United States

Washington's Birthday, also known as Presidents' Day, is a federal holiday held on the third Monday of February. The day honors presidents of the United States, including George Washington, the USA's first president

What do people do?

Washington's Birthday officially honors the life and work of George Washington, the first president of the United States. The day commemorates past presidents of the USA. Washington's Birthday is sometimes known as Presidents' Day. This is because while most states have adopted Washington's Birthday, some states officially celebrate Presidents' Day.

Some states pay particular attention to Abraham Lincoln, as his birthday was also in mid-February. In the weeks or days leading up to the holiday, schools often organize events and lessons for students about the presidents of the United States and George Washington in particular. It is a popular day for stores to start their sales.

The US federal holiday is on the third Monday of February each year, but records show that George Washington's birthday is on February 22.

Public life

Many businesses are open as usual and many stores hold sales on Washington's Birthday. Many delivery services, except for the Post Office, have a regular service and many, but not all, public transit systems operate on regular schedules. Some schools close for the whole week for a mid-winter recess. According to some government sources, Indiana observes the Washington's birthday holiday in December.

Background

George Washington was the first president of the United States of America. His first term as president was from 1789 to 1793 and his second term from 1793 to 1797. Before he became president, he played important roles in the military, leading the American Continental Army to victory over the British in 1783. Washington is often seen as the father of the United States and is probably the best known American politician ever.

The likeness and name of George Washington can still be seen in many places in the United States. There is the portrait of him and three other American presidents carved into Mount Rushmore National Memorial in South Dakota. His image is also used on the one-dollar bill and the quarter-dollar coin. The capital of the United States, Washington D.C., Washington State and at least three universities are named after him.

Washington's Birthday was first celebrated as a holiday in the District of Columbia in 1880. It was made a federal holiday in 1885. The holiday was originally held on the anniversary of George Washington's birth, on February 22. In 1971, this holiday was moved to the third Monday in February.

This holiday is legally designated as "Washington's Birthday". Though other institutions such as state and local governments and private businesses may use other names, it is the federal government's policy to always refer to holidays by the names designated in the law. FORECAST-WXWALL

PKG:

BLADDER CANCER IS THE 6TH MOST COMMON CANCER IN THIS COUNTRY-

AND IS FOUND MORE FREQUENTLY IN MEN. THE MAJORITY OF CASES

INVOLVE LOW-GRADE TUMORS AND THE OUTLOOK FOR SURVIVAL IS GOOD.

DR. ALEJANDRO MIRANDA-SOUSA/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

:59: Because those are much more simple to treat and have a high rate of curing with

patients tumor free. 75% of cancer will be a low grade none invasive tumors.

BLADDER CANCER IS TYPICALLY FOUND WHEN A DOCTOR DETECTS

BLOOD IN THE URINE AND REFERS THE PATIENT TO A UROLOGIST. USING A

CYSTOSCOPE DOCTORS CAN VIEW AND REMOVE AN AFFECTED AREA.

DR. ALEJANDRO MIRANDA-SOUSA/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

4:24 The low grade cancer, the scrapping or removal of the tumor is done with no cuts. All of

that is done with a little tiny scope usually in the outpatient center. Sometimes medication is

given within the bladder; a form of chemotherapy or immunotherapy.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

While this low-grade cancer is rarely fatal- it can be problematic. It comes back more than 50%

of the time- sometimes in a different location. Making it extremely important to keep on keep

an eye on the bladder.

DR. ALEJANDRO MIRANDA-SOUSA/UROLOGIST

RUNS:

:59 So even though you remove it, you find you remove it take care of it, we stay very

vigilant afterwards. And the follow up is to check the bladder every 3 months for the first

2 years.

FROM THAT POINT ON DOCTORS RECOMMEND YEARLY MONITORING.
