ANOTHER SNOWSTORM IS MOVING THROUGH MIDWEST TODAY.

IT WILL BE IN THE NORTHEAST TONIGHT.

PEOPLE IN SOME AREAS COULD GET UP TO A HALF A FOOT OF SNOW.

AS TAHMAN BRADLEY REPORT - IT'S A PATTERN THAT COULD LAST UNTIL EARLY MARCH. Return to index of stories...

WINTER STORM-PKG

The Northeast can't catch a break.

Another monster storm ravaged the New England coast.

It brought some areas more than a foot of snow and whiteout conditions from

50 mile-per-hour winds.

About 14,000 homes and businesses lost power.

Residents are screaming "enough already!"

MOS William Madison, Pennsylvania Resident

"I HATE IT. I WISH IT WAS DONE."

MOS Morgan Wade, Dover, NH Resident

"THIS IS NOT THE NEW ENGLAND OF MY CHILDHOOD. IT'S A HARSH, FROSTBITTEN

AWFULNESS."

For many, cleaning up all that snow is backbreaking.

And plows out on the streets can't move fast enough.

MOS Maine Plow Driver

"I STARTED ABOUT AN HOUR AGO AND I HAVE ANOTHER TWELVE TO GO."

Communities across the country are running out of snow removal money.

Portsmouth, New Hampshire has already spent 80% of its winter storm budget,

with salt the number one expense.

SOT Peter Rice, Portsmouth, NH Public Works

"WE DO DOWNTOWN LOADOUTS, WHICH ENTAILS REMOVING SNOW FROM DOWNTOWN. AND

EACH TIME WE DO THAT IT'S ABOUT A 30-THOUSAND DOLLAR EFFORT."

In Milwaukee, crews are now using sand on side streets, trying to conserve

what little salt they have left.

MOS Mike McConnohie, Wisconsin Plow Operator

"IF THIS WINTER DOESN'T BREAK, WE'RE GOING TO START RUNNING OUT. AND IT'S

KIND OF A SCARY SITUATION TO GO THROUGH."

Out west, the problem - avalanches.

Two more skiers were found dead on Sunday, swept away in this powerful

snowslide.

Since February 8, at least ten people have died in avalanches.

The mountain regions of the northwest are bracing for seven feet of snow

this week.raising the danger of more avalanches. Return to index of stories...

Strengthening high pressure close to Florida will control the local weather pattern through midweek. Mostly sunny and dry weather is expected with a gradual warming trend. Highs

will reach the middle 80s by Wednesday and Thursday. The high pressure will move

farther offshore by Friday and Saturday, allowing Southerly winds to start to increase

ASTHMA CAN BE SO SEVERE THAT IT CAN SOMETIMES LEAD TO DEATH.

MEDICINES AND INHALERS HELP BUT DON'T ALWAYS STOP THE ATTACKS.

BUT A NEW, UNIQUE TREATMENT COULD SAVE LIVES.

DOCTOR BRUCE HENSEL REPORTS. Return to index of stories...

"you think about death because when you can't get that breath in it's such a miserable feeling"

NICHOLE MOSES IS TALKING ABOUT HER ASTHMA; WHICH SHE KNOWS CAN TURN LIFE THREATENING WHEN INHALER AND MEDICATIONS DON'T WORK.

"i would end up in the hospital for maybe 7-12 days"

THREE TO FOUR TIMES A YEAR FOR NEARLY 15 YEARS. THEN DR AVI ISHAAYA SUGGESTED A NEW PROCEDURE CALLED BRONCHIAL THERMOPLASTY WHICH HEATS UP THE INSIDE OF THE BREATHING TUBES WHICH BECOME INFLAMED OVER TIME, MAY THICKEN AND THEN CONTRACT EVEN TIGHTER DURING AN ACUTE ATTACK

HEATING THE SMOOTH TISSUE HAS BEEN SHOWN TO BLOCK THE CONTRACTION AND TIGHTENING AND

"helps reduce the amount of muscle tissue surrounding the bronchial walls."

"there's no destruction that occurs to the tissue at all"

HERE'S HOW ITS DONE

AFTER ANESTHESIA IS GIVEN, THE DOCTOR INSERTS A FLEXIBLE TUBE THROUGH THE MOUTH OR NOSE GUIDING IT TO LUNGS. HE THEN EXTENDS A SPECIAL TIP FROM THE TUBE THAT USES RADIO WAVES TO HEAT THE SMOOTH MUSCLE.

IT TAKES 3 TREATMENTS TO HEAT UP ENOUGH OF THE MUSCLE TO MAKE A DIFFERENCE AND STUDIES SHOW SIGNIFICANT CHANGES

"over 30 percent reductions in asthma exacerbations and about an 80 percent or so reduction in visits to the emergency rooms, hospitalizations"

FOR NICOLE THE NUMBER WAS ONE HUNDRED PERCENT REDUCTION-NO HOSPITALIZATIONS AT ALL IN …

ISHAAYA SAYS THESE BENEFITS SHOULD LAST AT LEAST 5 YEARS IF NOT LONGER. NICOLE ISN'T WASTING ANY TIME. SHE BOUGHT A NEW CAR AND IS DOING ALL THE THINGS HER ASTHMA HAD ONCE KEPT FROM HER.

"it was like a weight had been lifted I didn't have to worry from dying from asthma or not being able to breath." Return to index of stories...

HEROIN OVERDOSE DRUG-PKG

" unconscious, he was not breathing to sustain life."

RENSSELAER COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPUTY ZACH SHARPE IS DESCRIBING THE SCENE JANUARY 31ST, SHORTLY AFTER 8 P.M., WHEN HE WAS CALLED TO A HOME IN RENSSELAER COUNTY.

A YOUNG, ADULT MAN, WHOSE NAME AND ADDRESS ARE NOT BEING RELEASED, WAS SUFFERING A HEROIN OVERDOSE.

"He was gurgling he had constricted pupils."

HOWEVER, THIS YOUNG MAN WOULD SURVIVE THANKS TO THE DRUG NALOXONE, ALSO CALLED NARCAN.

FOR THE SECOND TIME SINCE DEPUTY SHARPE WAS TRAINED IN ITS USE, HE ADMINISTERED THE TREATMENT. AN OUNCE OF THE DRUG IS ADMINISTERED INTO EACH NOSTRIL. THE EFFECT IS REMARKABLE.

"In about 4 to 5 minutes the patient was awake and talking to us. We were able to remove any artificial airway that we replaced in the patient. He was able to talk to us and walked out to the stretcher."

HEROIN KILLS BECAUSE IS SUPPRESSES BREATHING. NALOXONE COUNTERACTS THAT.

"It works right at the receptors where the heroin or other opioids. It kicks them right off the receptor and allows the person to breathe again."

NALOXONE IS RELATIVELY INEXPENSIVE - LESS THAN $40 FOR THE DELIVERY KIT AND DRUG.

THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH BUYS IT AND PROVIDES IT TO THE RENSSELAER COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT - THE FIRST LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCY IN NEW YORK, BACK IN 2012 TO GET THE DRUG THROUGH A PILOT PROGRAM.

ALL THE SHERIFF'S DEPUTIES ARE TRAINED IN BASIC LIFE SUPPORT. TO DATE THEY'VE SAVED FOUR PEOPLE WITH NALOXONE.

DR. DAILEY SAYS THE REGIONAL EMERGENCY MEDICAL ORGANIZATION IS WORKING WITH OTHER LOCAL LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES INTERESTED IN BEING TRAINED IN NALOXONE USE AND THE FDA IS REVIEWING AN APPLICATION TO MAKE IT AVAILABLE OVER THE COUNTER.

DR. DAILEY, EVEN IF IT'S GIVEN TO THE WRONG PERSON, THERE'S NO HARMFUL SIDE EFFECT. Return to index of stories...

FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

Strengthening high pressure close to Florida will control the local weather pattern through midweek. Mostly sunny and dry weather is expected with a gradual warming trend. Highs

will reach the middle 80s by Wednesday and Thursday. The high pressure will move

farther offshore by Friday and Saturday, allowing Southerly winds to start to increase

our humdiity level. Humidity may get high enough this weekend for a stray afternoon

shower. Otherwise, a partly sunny and unseasonably warm pattern will continue. Return to index of stories...

SNAKE PASTOR DEAD-TRX O ANI

A KENTUCKY PASTOR,

KNOWN FOR HIS USE OF POISONOUS SNAKES IN HIS RELIGIOUS SERVICE IS DEAD.

JAMIE COOTS STARRED IN THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC REALITY SHOW "SNAKE SALVATION".

HE DIED SATURDAY AFTER HE WAS BITTEN BY A SNAKE DURING SERVICE.

EVAN JOHNSON HAS THE STORY. Return to index of stories...

SNAKE PASTOR DEAD-PKG

THIS SMALL CHURCH ON EVANS DRIVE IN MIDDLESBORO, KENTUCKY THE FULL GOSPEL TABERNACLE IN JESUS NAME IS WHERE PASTOR JAMIE COOTS STAR OF NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC'S SNAKE SALVATION WOULD LEAD HIS CONGREGATION IN SERVICE HANDLING POISONOUS SNAKES.

SATURDAY WOULD BE THE LAST SERVICE FOR PASTOR COOTS.

He was standing over the pulpit, I was standing on the other side and I just seen him drop the snakes.

PASTOR COOTS' SON CODY SAYS HIS FATHER HAD BEEN BITTEN BEFORE. EIGHT TIMES BEFORE SO HE DIDN'T IMMEDIATELY WORRY ABOUT BITE NUMBER NINE.

I thought, its just like any other services. Somebody got bit. They'll go home, they're gonna suffer. Anytime you lose your daddy or mommy, you never see it coming.

I was standing right beside him when it happened. I could have reached over and picked the snakes up out of his hands.

MIDDLEBORO'S POLICE SAY THE SNAKE BITE PASTOR COOTS ON HIS RIGHT HAND. OFFICERS ALSO SAY MEDICAL TREATMENT WAS ALSO REFUSED.

He didn't believe in going to the doctor for a snake bite. He would go for anything else but not a snake bite.

I would rather seen him go out with a snake bite then laying under a bridge with a needle in his arm.

WHILE MANY ONLY KNOW COOTS FOR HIS WORK WITH SNAKES, THOSE WHO WALKED THROUGH THESE DOORS EVER WEEK SAY THERE IS SO MUCH MORE TO HIM.

They don't about going and visiting the elders, his sisters and brothers, praying for them. They don't know about him going and talking to all these people at all these stores. They don't know that man. All they know is what they seen.

What I will miss most is going snake hunting with him. That was father son time. That was our bonding time. We'd go snake hunting together.

PASTOR COOTS' 21-YEAR-OLD SON CODY SAYS HE'S PREPARED TO TAKE OVER HIS FATHER'S CHURCH AND WILL CARRY OUT HIS FATHER'S WISHES BY CONTINUING TO HAVE SNAKES PRESENT AT EVERY SERVICE. Return to index of stories...
