FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXCTR

RAIN CHANCES RETURN

Our stretch of great weather continued into Thursday, with a blend of sun & clouds and highs in the 80s. Expect a mild and humid evening, with temps only falling into the 70s. Patchy fog may once again develop overnight, with lows in the mid 60s

Changes are ahead as we enter Friday. A cool front will plow into North Florida. The front doesn't make it into our area, but it will transport more moisture into the region. The result will be a lot more cloud cover and scattered rain chances. The best chance for rain will be in the afternoon areas east of I-75. Highs on Friday will be in the low 80s.

The increased moisture stays in place for Saturday. We'll keep partly sunny skies to a blend of sun & clouds. Again, a few scattered showers will be possible inland. Highs on Saturday will climb into the mid 80s.

Sunday features more sunshine and lower rain chances. Expect partly cloudy conditions to close the weekend, with just an isolated rain chance. Highs will again be in the mid 80s.

Next week still looks fairly warm with a chance of showers. Monday and Tuesday are still expected to feature partly cloudy skies with isolated rain showers possible. Expect highs both days in the low 80s.

Rain chances will increase midweek as the frontal boundary finally begins to push into Southwest Florida. We'll close out next week with temps in the upper 70s to low 80s. Return to index of stories...

SEVERE WEATHER IS BATTERING FOLKS IN MUCH OF THE CENTRAL U-S.

-REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

IT'S A STORY OF EXTREMES:

TORNADOES AND SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS IN PARTS OF ILLINOIS, TENNESSEE AND STATES FURTHER SOUTH.

UP NORTH BLIZZARDS AND WHITEOUT CONDITIONS IN IOWA AND MINNESOTA.

IT'S ALL PART OF A FAST-DEVELOPING STORM FRONT SWEEPING ACROSS THE CENTRAL U-S.

METEOROLOGISTS SAY THE MIX OF WARM AND COLD AIR IS TO BLAME FOR THE MOST SEVERE CONDITIONS.

Very hot air, very muggy air in the East, very much colder air behind it. That cold air pushes the warm air up -- that's the cold front -- and we get the tornado possibilities.

MORE THAN POSSIBILITIES: THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE HAD REPORTS OF AS MANY AS EIGHT TORNADOES IN CENTRAL ILLINOIS LATE THURSDAY.

SEVEN OUTBUILDINGS WERE DESTROYED IN MECHANICSBURG.

MORE THAN 24-THOUSAND PEOPLE LOST POWER IN THE STATE.

SEVERAL AREAS ALSO SAW FLOODING, WHICH EMERGENCY OFFICIALS SAY WAS FUELED BY HEAVY RAIN AND MELTING SNOW.

MEANWHILE IN COLDER TEMPERATURES UP NORTH, BLIZZARD WARNINGS WERE IN EFFECT IN MINNESOTA AS RAIN TURNED TO SNOW.

The first hour was rain and then uh next half-hour was sleet and snow and then it was all wet snow so its been everything.

IT'S GOT SOME FED UP WITH THE SEEMINGLY NEVER-ENDING COLD.

I'm 46 years old and I have never had a winter like this. Never -- so many consistent days of it being cold.

AND THERE'S NO END IN SIGHT:

A COLD FRONT ON THE TAIL OF THE CURRENT SYSTEM WILL MEAN THE STORY OF EXTREMES WILL LIKELY CONTINUE INTO THE WEEKEND.

WITH PLUMMETING TEMPERATURES IN THE NORTH, AND HEAVY DOWNPOURS POSSIBLE IN THE LOWER MIDWEST.

SHOE BOMB NEW DETAILS-PKG

--REPORTER PKG-AS FOLLOWS--

U-S OFFICIALS SAY THE LATEST INTELLIGENCE INDICATES AL QAEDA TERRORISTS HAVE BEEN WORKING ON NEW SHOE-BOMB DESIGNS.

THAT'S WHAT PROMPTED THE DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY TO WARN AIRLINES TO BE ON THE LOOKOUT.

WHILE THERE'S NO SPECIFIC TARGET- THE WARNING PERTAINS TO FLIGHTS FROM AT LEAST 25 CITIES OVERSEAS-- INTO THE U-S.

JOHANNESBURG, PARIS, LONDON, CAIRO, CITIES IN THE MIDDLE EAST ARE ON THE LIST.

THIS IS NOT BELIEVED TO BE CONNECTED TO THE RECENT WARNING ABOUT TOOTHPASTE-BOMBS LIKE THIS ONE:

BUT THERE'S ONE MAN. A 31-YEAR-OLD COLLEGE DROPOUT NAMED IBRAHIM AL ASIRI-- WHO TERRORISM EXPERTS SAY COULD BE CONNECTED TO THIS THREAT.

"This is just the kind of device he is trying to build- and has built in the past."

U-S INTELLIGENCE OFFICIALS TELL CNN: IBRAHIM AL-ASIRI IS ".THE BEST BOMB-MAKER WE KNOW OF. IN ANY AL QAEDA AFFILIATE."

THEY BELIEVE HE'S HIDING IN YEMEN. "OPERATING IN THE SHADOWS."

WORKING WITH THE GROUP AL QAEDA IN THE ARABIAN PENINSULA- AL-ASIRI, INTELLIGENCE OFFICIALS SAY, DESIGNED THE UNDERWEAR BOMB WHICH FAILED TO DETONATE AT THE LAST MINUTE ON A DETROIT-BOUND PLANE IN 2009.

AND IT WAS HIS PRINTER-CARTRIDGE BOMBS WHICH, THE FOLLOWING YEAR, GOT ONTO CARGO PLANES BOUND FOR THE U-S.

DEMONSTRATIONS OF THOSE TYPES OF BOMBS SHOWED THEY COULD HAVE BROUGHT DOWN AIRLINERS.

WHILE THOSE PLOTS WERE FOILED- IN EACH CASE AL-ASIRI DISPLAYED A FRIGHTENING ABILITY TO GET BOMBS PAST AIRPORT SECURITY. AND EXPERTS SAY HE'S LEARNED FROM HIS MISTAKES.

HOW DETERMINED IS IBRAHIM AL-ASIRI TO KILL AMERICANS AND THEIR ALLIES?

"This is a very cold customer. I mean this is a guy who recruited a brother to go and do a suicide-attack using an underwear bomb to kill a leading Saudi prince."

THE SAUDI COUNTER-TERROR CHIEF SURVIVED THAT 2009 ATTACK.

AL-ASIRI'S BROTHER ABDULLAH WAS KILLED. THIS VIDEO SHOWS THE BROTHERS EMBRACING JUST BEFORE THE MISSION.

U-S INTELLIGENCE OFFICIALS SAY THEY'RE HUNTING FOR IBRAHIM AL-ASIRI.

"Even if he is taken out, he is now training other recruits in the art of making these very sophisticated explosive devices which can bypass normal airport security." Return to index of stories...

THE FLU DOES NOT DISCRIMINATE AGAINST AGE.

BUT THIS YEAR. THE VIRUS IS MAINLY STRIKING A YOUNGER CROWD.

"Younger people, non-elderly adults are more likely this year to be hospitalized, to die from flu than they are in normal flu years."

A NEW REPORT FROM THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL FINDS PEOPLE BETWEEN THE AGES OF 18 AND 64 ACCOUNT FOR 61-PERCENT OF FLU-RELATED HOSPITALIZATIONS.

ONE REASON MAY BE THE DOMINANT VIRAL STRAIN.

H-1-N-1 OR "SWINE FLU" IS BACK. ACCOUNTING FOR AT LEAST 95-PERCENT OF FLU CASES. EXPERTS SAY YOUNG AND MIDDLE-AGED ADULTS APPEAR TO HAVE LOW LEVELS OF NATURAL IMMUNITY TO HELP FIGHT OFF H-1-N-1.

ALSO. VACCINATION RATES IN THIS AGE GROUP ARE LOW.

"These young adults who don't think they're going to get the flu or don't think they're going to get very sick if they do, are least likely to get vaccinated."

INFECTIOUS DISEASE EXPERTS ADMIT THE FLU VACCINE IS NOT PERFECT -- ONLY ABOUT 60-PERCENT EFFECTIVE.

"It's the wind and the snow and the blowing snow here in northern Wisconsin this morning. the storm now pulling just off to our east so we're getting the back side and these winds are gusting over 30mph.

We've had 10-12 inches of snow here. as much as a foot of snow in parts of Minnesota. Around Duluth they've had as much as 15 inches of snow and its now dry and powdery so the wind is picking it up and just blowing it everywhere. Look at this shot behind me here. this is Bay, right off Lake Superior and you can't really even see anything, just a sea of white. there's no detail, no definition as we look up the bay towards a frozen Lake Superior.

Temperatures have tumbled this morning. we were out here before sunrise it was 28.now its down to 18. the wind chill is right around zero.

We're not going to get a whole lot more snow falling, but its going to be the blowing and drifting of the snow that will continue through this afternoon.

Up on the UP of Michigan, there's a blizzard warning until 10pm tonight. Those areas have already had over 250 inches of snow this season and they're going to get more snow with wind gusts up to 50mph.

There's snow everywhere. but they did get a break. up around Marquette its the first time they've seen above freezing temperatures in 75 days.that's a record. But now the temperature is going back down well below freezing. By tomorrow morning in this area down around 4 or 5 and next week another shot of bitter air, literally from the North pole. THEY ALL BROUGHT THREE YEARS OF PAIN AND ANGUISH. HIS FATHER BROUGHT A GIANTS CAP, HIS SISTER BROUGHT A LETTER FROM THE MOTHER OF BRYAN STOW'S CHILDREN.

"You are able to live and Bryan can't get out of bed. He can't do anything without assistance because of you.

BECAUSE OF THEM, LOUIE SANCHEZ AND MARVIN NORWOOD TODAY ADMITTED TO ATTACKING STOW AT DODGERS STADIUM IN MARCH OF 2011 AND CAUSING PERMANENT BRAIN DAMAGE. BUT THEY DID NOT APPEAR TO REGRET IT. AND THAT MADE EVEN THE JUDGE ANGRY. HE TOLD THEM THAT BECAUSE OF THEIR ACTIONS HE FEARED TAKING HIS SON TO A FOOTBALL GAME.

"And you don't have to stare at me Mr. Sanchez but I know you are paying attention to me. Is that we run into people like you that have no civility, and you're smiling. Do you think its funny? No civility.

SANCHEZ, WHO KNOCKED STOW TO THE GROUND AND KICKED HIM REPEATEDLY WAS SENTENCED TO EIGHT YEARS IN PRISON. NORWOOD TO FOUR YEARS. EVERY MEMBER OF STOW'S FAMILY WISHED IT WAS MORE.

"The years you spend in prison is what you is what you cretins deserve."

WEATHER-WX WALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

MORE PEOPLE IN THE U-S DIE FROM LUNG CANCER THAN ANY OTHER TYPE OF CANCER.

IN MANY CASES THEY HAVE LIMITED OPTIONS FOR TREATMENT.

BUT IN TODAYS HEALTH MATTERS AMY OSHIER REPORTS ON A DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE THAT IS MAKING LIFE EASIER FOR PATIENTS. Return to index of stories...

HEALTH MATTERS-PKG

PKG:

UNTIL FAIRLY RECENTLY THE APPROACH TO DIAGNOSING A SUSPICIOUS

LUNG LESION WAS GO BIG WITH SURGERY OR GO SMALL WITH A NEEDLE

BIOPSY. NOW DOCTORS ARE USING A NEW, LESS INVASIVE APPROACH TO

GET RESULTS.

DR. PAUL DiGIORGI/CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

RUNS:

:22: Right it's called VATS or Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery. So rather than making a

larger incision in the chest wall and using a rib spreader to see exactly what's going on

in the chest, we can use a small incision with a 5 mm camera, which is about a quarter

of an inch, and look at the image on the TV screen.

IT'S A HUGE ADVANTAGE FOR PATIENTS. HOSPITAL STAYS ARE SHORTER AND

WITH LESS TRAUMA TO THE BODY- THERE IS LESS PAIN. NOT THE STANDARD

PROCEDURE YET, THE VATS TECHNIQUE IS GAINING TRACTION.

DR. PAUL DiGIORGI/CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

RUNS:

2:52 Nationally it's still at around 50% roughly give or take 10%. It has not caught on

completely yet because it's a learning curve.

AMY OSHIER/REPORTING

RUNS:

Studies show this approach has fewer complications and the results are comparable to

large, open operations. Although it's performed through several small entry points with

small equipment, the VATS procedure gives surgeons a great deal of freedom.

DR. PAUL DiGIORGI/CARDIOTHORACIC SURGEON

RUNS:

4:07 For someone who has a suspicious lesion, what we typically will do is go in and

do a biopsy of the mass. Typically we take the whole mass out as part of the biopsy. It

is then that the pathologist will tell us if it's cancer or not. 1:46 And then you can move

on to a formal anatomic larger surgery where you take out part of the lung and take out

lymph nodes.

USING THE VIDEO ASSIST, SURGEONS ARE LIGHTENING THE LOAD FOR LUNG

CANCER PATIENTS. FOR LEE MEMORIAL HEALTH SYSTEM, I'M AMY OSHIER. Return to index of stories...

"It's a hidden surprise."

THIS IS THE VIEW FROM THE HELL'S REVENGE TRAIL, LESS THAN FIVE MILES EAST OF MOAB. IT'S ONE OF THE MOST POPULAR TRAILS IN THE AREA. KENT GREEN, OWNER OF MOAB COWBOY COUNTRY OFFROAD ADVENTURES, TAKES GROUPS UP THERE EVERY DAY. ONE OF HIS FAVORITE STOPS IS THIS OVERLOOK, WHERE HE GETS TO SHOW OFF DINOSAUR TRACKS ENCASED IN THE NAVAJO SANDSTONE.

"The kids, they absolutely loved them."

WHEN THEY WERE OUT THERE TUESDAY AFTERNOON, AROUND 3:30.

"I walked over to show them this beautiful track that I always like to show, and I discovered it was gone. It was just gone."

HE COULDN'T BELIEVE IT.

"I was devastated."

THERE ARE SEVERAL TRACKS IN THE AREA, BUT GREEN SAYS THIS WAS A GREAT FOSSIL.

"The feeling I had inside was, not only had somebody taken something from everybody else, but it almost felt like somebody shot my uncle."

HE REPORTED IT TO THE BLM.

"They are priceless. They are one-of-a-kind. They're individual tracks that a dinosaur made 190 million years ago. And they can't be replaced."

IT WOULD HAVE TAKEN A LOT OF WORK WITH A PRYING BAR, AND POSSIBLY A HAMMER.

"They steal them scientifically, from context. Steal them from the public for enjoying them. And, they steal them from all of us Americans, who own them as federal property."

THE BLM, AND THE GUIDE HOPE THAT SOMEONE HAS CLUES.
