NATS - explosion

never did see him -all of a sudden the windshield just explodes.

HEART POUNDING MOMENTS FOR PILOT ROB WEBER -

SOMETHING HE'S *NEVER SEEN IN MORE THAN A DECADE OF FLYING PLANES.

I wasn't sure if it was in the plane with me. Where he was or what happened.

IT WAS SMOOTH SAILING FROM CENTRAL FLORIDA TO FORT MYERS' PAGE FIELD--

WEBER RADIOED IN TO THE CONTROL TOWER WHEN HE WAS JUST A FEW MILES AWAY FROM TOUCHING DOWN.

A few seconds later the windshield exploded, stuff was flying everywhere.

WATCH AGAIN - IN SLOW MOTION. A BIRD - SLAMS INTO WEBER'S WINDSHIELD.

GLASS FLIES AND HEAVY WINDS WHIP THE PLANE - FLYING 170 MILES PER HOUR.

SENDING IT INTO A QUICK SHAKE -

BUT WEBER'S STEADY HANDS TOOK OVER ALONG WITH HIS PILOT TRAINING.

just fly the fricken plane, that's what everybody tells ya.

A FEW MOMENTS LATER -

WATCH AS WEBER REACHES UP TO CHECK HIMSELF. REALIZING HE'S BEEN CUT ON THE HEAD.

head bleeds are bad. Pulled my hand out and it was covered in blood I was like oh boy. I just kept telling the tower I gotta get on the ground quick.

WEBER KEPT THE CAMERA ROLLING -

ONE HE PICKED UP JUST A FEW WEEKS BACK.

just trying to get used to it.

BUT HE COULD NEVER PREDICT HE'D GET THIS ONCE AND A LIFETIME FOOTAGE.

KNOWING HOW LUCKY HE IS TO BE ALIVE AFTER WHAT WAS A LOT MORE THAN A CLOSE CALL.

if the bird would have come all the way in, and knocked me unconsicous.

LUCKILY THAT DIDBN'T HAPPEN--

AS WEBER SAFELY LANDS THE PLANE -

HE'S CONGRATULATED BY CONTROL TOWER RADIO.

NATS- SO CALM, GOOD FLYING.

AND MET WITH FIRE ENGINES AS HIS PLANE COMES TO A STOP.

NATS - SIGHS. Return to index of stories...

TEAM U-S-A SPENT THE ENTIRE DAY ON THE OUTSIDE.

IN NINE EVENTS - THE AMERICANS FAILED TO MEDAL.

MEDALS AREN'T AN ISSUE FOR NORWAY'S MARIT BJOERGEN.

A GOLD IN THE 30-KILOMETER CROSS COUNTRY EVENT MAKES HER THE MOST DECORATED FEMALE OLYMPIAN EVER.

THERE WAS NO FINISH FOR THE LONE AMERICAN IN THE MEN'S SNOWBOARD PARALLEL SLALOM.

JUSTIN REITER WAS DISQUALIFIED IN HIS FIRST RUN AFTER CLIPPING A GATE.

"Just a little impatient and boom, went inside a stubby. Snow was pretty aggressive and grabby so it just kind of snuck up on me. I haven't done that in a long time."

AFTER THE FIRST TWO RUNS IN THE 4-MAN BOBSLED.

THE U-S TEAM IS IN FOURTH PLACE.

"We're only 100th out of a medal, 17 hundredths out of gold. I mean that's not, that can be easily made up as you saw today with the Latvians. I mean it's, it's not over yet."

FORECAST-WXWALL

It was another very warm, humid day across Southwest Florida with temperatures soaring into the mid 80s under tons of sunshine.

Beyond sunset, we've got another muggy, warm evening ahead with temperatures only settling down to the upper 60s, and the necessary ingredients will be in place for more fog to develop early Sunday morning.

Once the fog erodes by mid morning, we'll be in store for a sunny and unseasonably warm Sunday. Daytime highs will return to the low to mid 80s, and any rain chance will be well inland and far from our coast.

The warm weather rolls along into the first half of the week, but an approaching cool front should bring in more clouds and unsettled weather for the second half of the week.

Our temperatures should drop a little Thursday and Friday with highs in the 70s and lows potentially in the upper 50s, but our sky should stay fairly cloudy, and we'll like have more showers to track.

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA. Return to index of stories...
