FIRST ALERT FORECAST-WXWALL

THIS WEATHERCAST HAS BEEN PREPARED BY THE NBC2 WEATHER STAFF.

IT IS NOT A VERBATIM OF WHAT IS BEING SAID, BUT IS THE FORECAST FOR OUR AREA.

TRACKING WARM DAYS

Our warm weather will continue through Wednesday before a chance for rain showers comes back to southwest Florida. In the meantime. relatively nice weather will continue. The forecast tonight calls for partly cloudy skies and mild 60's in the morning. Humidity will remain high tonight and after we start cooling this evening we will also be tracking fog. Some areas of fog could reduce visibility for a few hours during the morning commute tomorrow. Favored places for the heaviest fog will be inland. Tomorrow will be partly cloudy and warm with a high in the lower 80's. Rain chances stay less than 10% again on Tuesday.

The next cold front destined to move through Florida will be on Wednesday and Thursday. Skies will cloud up by the end of the day on Wednesday and a few showers could break out in the evening. On Thursday we expect cloudy weather with on/off showers. Temperatures will cool to the 70's during the day on Thursday.

The long-range forecast looks great for the upcoming weekend as sun returns and highs hit the 80's once again. Return to index of stories...

GQ WHY DOESN'T FL REQUIRE FRONT PLATES-1-SHOT, SS

TODAY'S GOOD QUESTION IS ABOUT WHAT IDENTIFIES YOU FROM EVERY OTHER DRIVER ON THE ROAD.

DAN IN ESTERO WROTE US TO SAY: "I CAME HERE 10 YEARS AGO FROM TEXAS, WHERE WE HAD FRONT & BACK PLATES ON OUR VEHICLES. WHY DOES FLORIDA JUST HAVE ONE?"

GOOD QUESTION FOR NBC-2'S CHAD OLIVER. Return to index of stories...

GQ WHY DOESN'T FL REQUIRE FRONT PLATES-PKG

THE LICENSE PLATE FOR A CAR OR TRUCK IS LIKE D-N-A FOR A HUMAN.

IT'S INDIVIDUAL. IT'S UNIQUE. AND IN MORE THAN HALF OF THE COUNTRY LICENSE PLATES ARE VISIBLE FROM THE FRONT AND THE BACK.

My name's Pam Oakes -I'm an ASC certified technician."

AT PAM'S MOTOR CITY TECHS WORK ON THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES A YEAR.

Easily over 10,000.

AND THEY COME FROM ALL OVER.

MIchigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana, Illinois.

See quite a few Canadian tags. Ontario. Quebec.

SHE HAS A CANADIAN CUSTOMER WHO RECENTLY DITCHED HER DUAL PLATES AND REGISTERED IN FLORIDA.

She now has eliminated the two and has gone to one.

WHETHER YOU'RE USED TO SINGLE OR DUAL PLATES DEPENDS ON WHICH REGION OF THE COUNTRY YOU'RE FROM.

Well, I've always been used to single plates in Indiana.

FLORIDA IS ONE OF NINETEEN STATES,

MOSTLY IN THE SOUTHEAST AND MID-WEST, WHERE A SINGLE PLATE SUFFICES.

GO WEST AND INTO NEW ENGLAND, AND YOU'LL FIND 31 STATES THAT REQUIRE DUAL PLATES.

A STUDY BY TEXAS A&M FOUND LAW ENFORCEMENT PREFERS TWO TAGS BECAUSE IT'S EASIER TO I-D VEHICLES.

THE FLORIDA HIGHWAY PATROL ISN'T ADVOCATING FOR DUAL PLATES.

F-H-P OPERATES UNDER THE DEPARTMENT OF HIGHWAY SAFETY AND MOTOR VEHICLES.

A SPOKESPERSON TOLD ME: "THE STATE BELIEVES REQUIRING A SINGLE PLATE IS SUFFICIENT. ANY CHANGE IN THE SYSTEM WOULD REQUIRE AN ACT OF THE LEGISLATURE."

I just think it's kind of a waste.

STATES LIKE FLORIDA WHO SUPPORT SINGLE PLATES SITE THE POSSIBILTY OF VEHICLE FRAUD, THE EXPENSE OF ISSUING TWO PLATES, AND AESTHETICS.

REQUIRING A PLATE ON THE FRONT MEANS LESS ROOM FOR PERSONAL FLAIR.

Well, the only reason I put one on mine is because there was a spot for it!

PLATES ARE BOTH ESSENTIAL AND EXPRESSIVE.

That's right - we love our tags

A LICENSE TO REVEAL MORE THAN JUST WHERE YOU'RE FROM.

TRADITION IS A MAIN REASON *WHY FLORIDA DOESN'T REQUIRE TWO PLATES.

THE FIRST LICENSE PLATES ISSUED IN THE STATE WERE MADE OF LEATHER. THAT WAS BACK IN 19-06 AND ONLY REQUIRED ON THE BACK OF A VEHICLE.

DO YOU HAVE A GOOD QUESTION?

SEND IT TO ME?

IT'S HARD TO FIND SOMEONE MORE PASSIONATE ABOUT COLLIER COUNTY THEN MURRAY HENDEL.

PRESIDENT OF THE COLLIER CITIZENS COUNCIL - HENDEL'S TRYING TO DO WHAT OTHERS HAVEN'T BUT SUCCESSFUL AT FOR THE LAST SEVERAL YEARS - RAISE THE COUNTY'S BED TAX.

Murray Hendel/2:43 "what we want to do is get the public behind us."

THE TAX HAS BEEN AT 4% SINCE 2005 - CHARGING VISITORS WHO STAYS AT HOTELS OR RENT OUT VACATION SPOTS.

AN INCREASE TO 5% COULD RASIE AN EXTRA THREE TO FOUR MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR - MONEY THAT COULD BE USED FOR ADVANCED BEACH RENOURISHMENT - SOMETHING THE COUNTY COULDN'T AFFORD IN 2013.

Murray Hendel/4:15 "what was done was a partial renourishment, which is a disgrace - because we're known for our fine beaches."

VISITORS WE SPOKE WITH - DON'T SEEM TO MIND THE IDEA.

Marie Colao/Visiting Naples 1:15 "absolutely, that would make sense. I wouldn't object to that."

Patrick Hart/Visiting Naples/4:27:13 "I don't think most people would even notice the difference with 1%."

PHIL MCCABE CERTAINLY WOULD.

OWNER OF THE INN ON FIFTH - MCCABE SAYS THE 4% NUMBER GIVES THEM A COMPETITIVE EDGE OVER OTHER AREAS LIKE MIAMI AND ORLANDO - ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO CORPORATE GATHERINGS.

Phil McCabe/Owner, Inn on Fifth/4:22:57 "our guests pay enough, they spend a lot of money in this town - they're not spending just on bed tax, they're spending sales tax."

MCCABE SAYS HIS GUESTS - BARELY EVEN USE THE BEACH.

Phil McCabe/4:22:42 "I would say 75% of my guests, minimum, don't step on the beach."

BUT WITH COLLIER TOURISM BOOMING - HENDEL FEELS THE DECISION IS A "NO BRAINER."

Murray Hendel/4:50 "they're throwing that factor that they need that competitive advantage into our face and i think it's a lot of bull." Return to index of stories...
